PLEASE CHECK THE LOST AND

FOUND FOR ANY ITEMS YOUR

CHILD MAY BE MISSING.

WES students recognized Orange Shirt day on September 28th, 2018.

WES teachers did a wonderful job discussing the significance of the

day with our students throughout the month of September. Our Abo-

riginal Education Support Worker Ms. Stevens and our Teacher Li-

brarian Mme. Anakin did an incredible job expanding on this learning

and dialogue by visiting classrooms and preparing focused lessons for

our students so they were made even more aware of what residential

schools were, and the healing impact of reconciliation.

Save the Date! WES Parents/Guardians! We are looking to hold our first round of Student Led Conferences

this year on November 28 and 29th, 2018. These are also the second and third early dismissal

days in the WZ school calendar. As mentioned, these conferences will be student led

where your child will be prepared to present their learning to you. It is very important that

you attend one of these sessions with your child! These conferences will be you seeing your

child’s learning in action. They are a means of communicating your child’s progress for that

first reporting term. Please plan on being present on ONE of these set times:

Wednesday November 28, 2018 – 2:00 – 4:00 pm

Thursday November 29, 2018 – 5:00 – 7:00 pm

WES staff is hoping to book half a class on one session and half on the other. If you are una-

ble to make either of these sessions, another date and time to review your child’s learning

and discuss their progress will have to be scheduled. More information to follow!

Terry Fox Run Assembly

WES students participated in the Terry Fox Run on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 @ 2:00pm. This annual event commemorates a Canadian hero who fought to bring addi-tional awareness to an illness that affects thousands of people each year. Terry Fox made it a goal to run across Canada to raise funds to help those with cancer and to support con-tinued research on how fight against it. Pictured above is Mrs. Stimming’s Gr. 2/3 doing a wonderful presentation for our school on why we recognize Terry Fox and the amazing legacy he’s left behind for all of us to follow.

OCTOBER RECOGNITION ASSEMBLY

October is Canadian Library Month! All month long, libraries and library partners across Canada are raising awareness of the valuable role libraries play in Canadi-

ans’ lives. More than just a place to find books, libraries promote cultural awareness, engage in the community, provide edu-

cational programs, support freedom of expression and so much more.

This year’s theme is “A Visit Will Get You Thinking”. I hope that you will find the time to pop into our school library on

open house night to see what great learning activities are taking place.

As a part of Canadian Library month, CBC books is hosting a fan choice contest for children aged 5-12. Students can vote on

their favorite of the five books (no purchase is necessary, you can view them on-line or read them in our library). There are

many prized available including books of a classroom, money to our school library and money to individual winners. Parental

consent is necessary and I encourage all of our students to enter this contest to try to win money or books for our school! The

contest closes October 25th. Please visit https://www.cbc.ca/fanchoice/ for more information.

Here at WES, our grade 4 and 5 library assistants have been a great help by re-shelving books, cutting out bookmarks and preparing

crafts and In the library this last month. Their efforts are greatly appreciated, as well as Michelle Rievaj’s assistance; “many hands

make for light work”!

Last week, the WES students learned about gratitude and each class will contribute to their gratitude tree in the coming weeks and

add leaves with messages of the different ways they can express their thankfulness. Our primary classes will be reading, imaging and

writing about autumn using the book “Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter” by Kenard Pak. The exceptional illustrations in the book

will undoubtedly fuel some incredible fall artwork. Several of our intermediate classes are currently working with on-line modules

about digital citizenship and internet safety, to learn how to navigate their increasingly digital world. MediaSmarts offer an excel-

lent resource for parents looking for information to support this learning at home http://mediasmarts.ca/

parents .

Sincerely, Your friendly neighborhood teacher-librarian, Mme. Anakin

The grade 3&4 class, along with the grade 4&5 class thoroughly enjoyed some service learning at Groundswell’s Community Green-house. The students helped to harvest tomatoes, kale, potatoes

and beans.

WES Student Celebration of Learning

Parents/Guardians!

WES will be hosting a Student Celebration of Learning/

OPEN HOUSE on Thursday October 18th from 5:30 – 7:00

pm.

Instead of an informal report being sent home, we are

hosting an open house to celebrate and showcase

your child’s learning.

This will be an opportunity to stop on by to take a look

at our school, your child’s classroom, and see what

they have been up to.

Unless arrangements have been made with your

child’s teacher, there is no need to schedule a specific

time to meet.

Thank you and we hope to see you then!
