Smith for the reminder of the school year. We also welcome Dennis Linthwaite who has joined our caretaking team in place of Carol Courtney who has accepted a position with the Service Team. At Wendat Village Public School we are fortunate to be surrounded by amazing students and staff but also by our numerous volunteers. April is Volunteer Month and we would like to take the time to formally recognize and thank all of the volunteers. Our Board is fortunate to have thousands of volunteers who generously offer our staff and students their time, talents and insight. As a volunteer, we recognize the time you provide out of your personal lives to help make school a safe, fun and enjoyable learning environment; your efforts are noticed and appreciated. We welcome volunteers at our school and greatly appreciate all that they do. As we enter the Spring months, it is a time where there is new growth, warmer weather and a lot of mud! With that being said, please ensure your child is properly dressed for the outdoor spring-like conditions and that they have a pair of indoor shoes. Our caretaking staff work very hard to ensure our students come to school each day to a clean and safe environment. By wearing indoor shoes we are demonstrating respect for their hard work and are doing our part to keep the school clean. This is the time of year that we also begin to see students ride a bike, scooter or skateboard to school. Please remember that students and parents are asked to walk their wheeled mode of transportation once on school property to ensure the safety of all our students. Students are also reminded to wear their helmets. Online registration is still open for York Region District School Board’s strategic planning town halls. YRDSB is revisioning its Multi-Year Plan (MYP) and Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Well-being. The Board of Trustees is responsible for setting the strategic direction of public education in York Region public schools. The MYP incorporates the direction established by the Trustees with feedback received from all stakeholders, and will inform decision making at the Board in the years to come. Town halls will be taking place across the region and feedback collected from families and community members will inform the creation of a new MYP. Your voice is important and your input and feedback will help York Region District School Board support student achievement and well-being. An online survey is available in April to share your thoughts if you are unable to attend a town hall.

Parking Lot NewsThank you to parents for parking on the road and utilizing the Kiss & Ride for safe drop off and pick up. Please continue to have students arrive between 8:45 and 9:00, as this is a time when students are supervised and may enter the building directly. If you are driving your child in the morning, we ask you to drop off no earlier than 8:45, as parking is limited and we need all available spaces for staff. There has been an increased presence of Bylaw Officers at our school and we remind you not to park your car or leave it unattended at anytime in the Kiss & Ride or Bus Loop. Thank you for your help in making our parking lot safer and accessible for all.

It’s time to remind children about being safe in our community. It’s a good time for parents to remind children about personal safety. Here's what children need to know:

● Their name, age, telephone number, address, city and province. This can be done through rhyme or song.

● How to contact their parents at any time, by memorizing cell or work numbers.● How and under what circumstances to call 911.● To never approach or enter a stranger's vehicle. A responsible adult would never

ask a child for directions or any other question for that matter.● Make sure they know they have a right to say "no" to an adult, especially when the

adult is asking them to do something they have been taught is wrong or feels uncomfortable. Reminding children of this right is important because children are taught from a young age to respect adults.

● To always tell parents where they will be and to never enter someone's home without their parent's permission.

● If home alone, never admit it when answering the phone. Never answer a knock at the door or speak through it. Adults can be very persuasive. Teach your child to call you if there is a knock at the door and if they fear for their safety, teach them to call 911. Make sure they know that police officers are there to help them and would not get mad if it were a false alarm.

● If they think they are being followed or are in danger they should run home or to a public place. If someone grabs them, they should try to get away, yelling and screaming while doing so.

● It is important to play in safe areas, never take shortcuts and stick with a buddy whenever possible.

It is never too early or too late to teach children the importance of personal safety. Common sense, communication and consistency are the keys. Remind children to alert a responsible adult if something strange happens that makes them feel uncomfortable. Remember, crime prevention is everyone's responsibility. For more information on this subject, visit www.yrp.ca.

Birthday Celebrations and TreatsWe have a number of students with severe allergies and anaphylaxis. As a result, our school does not permit outside snacks/treats to be brought in for birthdays. If you wish to bring an item in for your child’s birthday, as an alternative, we suggest items such as stickers, erasers or pencils. We are happy to let you know that our morning Announcement Team recognizes student birthdays by reading student names over the announcements each morning. Birthdays celebrated over the weekend are recognized on Mondays. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate classroom celebrations for students in our school and reserve these festivities for families after school hours. Thank you for understanding. Student MedicationsStudents taking medication, even for a short period of time, require paperwork to be completed by parents, as per Board policy and procedures. Please contact the school to have these forms sent home or feel free to come into the office to complete them. Medications must be kept in the office (with the exception of epi-pens and inhalers). Driving and Parking In and Around School Zones

Please help our environment by turning off your car! The safety of our students is paramount. This is a reminder to drivers dropping off or picking up students to abide by the Town’s parking by-laws in and around the school zone. By-law officers patrol the area and have issued tickets. Please be aware of the following:-There is no parking at any time in the school bus/fire loop (located at the front of the school facing Reeves Way Blvd), By Law officers have continued to issue tickets for parking in this area.-Only vehicles with Accessible Parking Permits displayed on the front dash of their vehicle may park in Accessible Parking spots. -Cars stopping to pick up their children in the parking lot, should only be stopped curbside – cars should not be double-parked and should not be blocking other vehicles-Students should only be exiting and entering vehicles curbsideIf you need to park your car after school, please use a side street and walk from there.
