Dear Parents, This year we have introduced an additional gift from the school for your children on their birthday. On our Friday assembly children who have had birthdays during the week will be presented with a birthday card and an inspirational Twigseeds book mark. The boys’ book mark says “Books are my transport, story, my journey” while the girls’ book mark says “A pencil and imagination can lead you anywhere.” I am encouraging the children once they have received their book marks to use them to mark their place in whatever book they are currently reading. Until their birthday I am encouraging students to use any book mark (homemade or commercial) to mark their place in their books. It is one small strategy in amongst a broad range of other strategies that we are implementing at St Joseph’s to support the children in further developing a genuine love of reading and writing. I would love to see book marks so warn from regular use that they need to be replaced. Children learn what they live and if we can continue to model at school and at home how important and how enjoyable reading and writing can be we give our children a very precious gift that will last a lifetime. Let’s take the time this week to ask our children what book they are currently reading and if they haven’t got one that they are currently reading or they have just finished reading their book make the time to borrow a new one from our school library or our town library. Dear Parents,

This year we have introduced an

additional gift from the school for your

children on their birthday. On our

Friday assembly children who have had

birthdays during the week will be

presented with a birthday card and an

inspirational Twigseeds book mark.

The boys’ book mark says “Books are

the girls’ book mark says “A pencil and

imagination can lead you anywhere.”

I am encouraging the children once

they have received their book marks to

use them to mark their place in

whatever book they are currently

reading. Until their birthday I am

encouraging students to use any book

mark (homemade or commercial) to

mark their place in their books. It is

one small strategy in amongst a broad

range of other strategies that we are

implementing at St Joseph’s to support

the children in further developing a

genuine love of reading and writing. I

would love to see book marks so warn

from regular use that they need to be

replaced. Children learn what they live

and if we can continue to model at

school and at home how important and

how enjoyable reading and writing can

be we give our children a very precious

gift that will last a lifetime.

Let’s take the time this week to ask

our children what book they are

currently reading and if they haven’t

got one that they are currently reading

or they have just finished reading their

book make the time to borrow a new

Parent & Friends Committee

The Parents & Friends Association is an integral part of St Joseph’s School and provides a formal structure for parents and others interested in the welfare of the

students to plan and organise activities for the benefit of our students and school. The P&F AGM and subsequent 1st meeting is set for

Wednesday, 22nd February from 6.00pm and will conclude by 7pm. Please consider becoming actively involved in your child’s school. Welcome BBQ & Parent Information Evening. On Wednesday, 8th February, parents and carers are invited to a welcome BBQ, followed by a parent information evening. The BBQ is a social opportunity to meet and welcome new families. The purpose of the information evening is for all parents to meet their child’s teacher, see the classroom and hear about some of the expectations each teacher has for their students. One of the greatest influences in your child’s learning progress is you, the parent. The more interest you show in what is happening at school, the more influence you have on your child’s learning.

A complimentary sausage sizzle will commence at 5:00pm. All parents will be invited to hear from the Principal at 5:45pm in the hall. Parents and carers are then invited to attend the classroom information session. Each class teacher will run two sessions: Session 1 is from 6:00pm; Session 2 is from 6:30pm. Each session is the same. This gives parents and carers who have children in more than one class the opportunity to visit each class.

School Choir Twila will be working with the student choir on Tuesdays followed by her private lessons. School Banking School banking will be on Wednesdays this year. Please ensure that your child’s banking is handed into the office on their arrival at school. Packs are available for any new students who wish to join School Banking. Please enquire at the office. The Banking Rewards program will be running again with some great new rewards to collect.

Sun Smart School St Joseph’s is a Sun Smart School and as the year begins we are experiencing some very hot weather. Now is a good time to remind students that they need to bring their hats to school every day so that they are protected from the harmful rays of the sun while they are in the playground. Students need to drink plenty of water throughout the day. The bubblers in the undercover area provide cooled and filtered water. Students are also encouraged to wear sunscreen. Wide Bay Swimming Students born in 2005, 2006 or 2007 may request Wide Bay Swimming information from Mrs Macklin directly.

Cross Country Training On Friday, 17th March, we will be conducting our School Cross Country Carnival from 9:00am to 11:30am. Students will be running laps of our school block. The perimeter of our block is 500metres:

• Ages 5 and 6 – 1 lap

• Ages 7 and 8 – 2 laps

• Ages 9 and 10 – 4 laps

• Ages 11 and 12/13 – 6 laps

During the cross country events, students will not cross any roads and there will be supervisors on each corner of the block. If you have any concerns with your child participating, please call the office. If you are able to assist, please inform the school office by Wednesday, 165h March.

Students will be advised about training for the Cross Country at a later date. Everyone is welcome. Term 1 Swimming Swimming lessons continue on Mondays and Fridays

as listed below. Friday lessons will begin at 11:45am. 1/2 will go first, then 3/4 followed by 5/6. All lessons will run for 40 minutes. Monday lessons will commence at 12pm. Mon 6th Feb Fri 10th Feb
