The Catechism of the Catholic Church, Part lV is about Christian prayer in two sections. The first section is about prayer in the Christian life. The second section is a detailed review of the prayer “Our Father” . The First section gives a definition of prayer. Then looks at “prayer as God’s gift”, “prayer as covenant”, and “ prayer as communion”. In Article one, prayer in the Old Testament is discussed. Major themes are, “Creation- source of prayer” “ God’s promise and the prayer of Faith”, “ Moses and the prayer of the mediator”, “ David and the prayer of the king”, Elijah, the prophets and conversion of heart”, and “Psalms, the prayer of the Assembly” Article two takes us to the time of Jesus. In con-trast to the earlier section, this is an exploration of pray-er in the New Testament. Themes are, “ Jesus prays”, “ Jesus teaches us how to pray”, “ Jesus hears our prayer”, and concludes with “The prayer of the Virgin Mary”. Article three is about prayer in the age of the church. Themes are, “Blessing and Adoration”, “Prayer of Petition”, “Prayer of Intercession”, “Prayer of Thanksgiving”, and “Prayer of Praise”. This section concludes that the Eucharist contains and expresses all forms of prayer: it is “the pure offering” of the whole Body of Christ to the Glory of God’s name and, according to the traditions of East and West, it is the “sacrifice of Praise”. Towards the end of this book, in chapter two of Part lV, “The Tradition of Prayer” is discussed. Themes in Article one are, “ The Word of God”, ”The Liturgy of the Church”, and “The Theological virtues”. It concludes that prayer in the events of each day and each moment is one of the secrets of the Kingdom revealed to “little children” to the servants of Christ, to the poor of the Beatitudes. Article two is about the way of prayer. Themes are, “Prayer to the Father”, “Prayer to Jesus”, the role of the holy Spirit in prayer, and “ in communion with the holy Mother of God”. Article three is about Guides of Prayer. Chapter three is about the life of prayer. Expressions of prayer- vocal prayer, meditation, and contemplative prayer – are discussed. Special consideration is given to the prayer of the Hour of Jesus. Section two of this Part lV is a detailed discussion of the Lord’s prayer. In short, the Catechism of the Catholic Church is a practical guide to every Catholic who is committed to follow Jesus on a daily basis. Having a copy at home and occasional reading relevant sections for children give them a sense of reverence and authenticity for our faith.

God bless you all

From the Pastor’s Desk / Del Escritorio del Padre

We are told by all spiritual writers that one important point to bear in mind, as we seek to a ain humility, is not to be

surprised by our own faults and failures.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The readings today center on mindfulness, awareness of where we stand in God’s plan. The mountain of Sinai carries a message of the majesty and distance of God, while Jesus’ presence as host of the banquet speaks of intimacy and mystery. September’s shadow calls us all to mindfulness as we prepare to return to life outside of summer. The Christian life holds these two places of knowledge of God in careful balance. Even in the accounts of the Passion we see the table of the upper room in balance with the Mount of Olives.

Altar means “high place,” yet it is also a table. The former liturgy of the Latin Rite began with the priest bowing at the foot of the altar’s three steps, chanting Introibo ad altare Dei, or “I will go to the altar of God,” followed by the altar servers’ response, “The God who gives joy to my youth.” Many parishioners can recall and recite this scene by heart. As with so many things in liturgy, there are layers of meaning in our worship. The altar table evokes memories of the high places once reserved for encounter with the holy, and the intimacy of the table where hospitality draws us to share food and drink.

HUMILITY

Humility is a virtue we don’t see much in our mes. It seems that bragging, swaggering, and arrogance dominate our fashion for everything and our Internet conversa ons. Who hasn’t been irritated by the “trolls” who try (usually with bad grammar and poor spelling) to start an online fight with those whose opinions do not align with theirs? Our stores, catalogs, and online shopping sites are full of useless items geared in use and price to the very rich, as ordinary, useful things seem to fade off the sales scene. As the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the middle class is fading away. What is the an dote to this? Humility is a good place to start. Devo on to God is worth more than riches. “The father of orphans and the defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. God gives a home to the forsaken; [God] leads forth prisoners to prosperity.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
