From the Principal’s Desk Dear Monty South Community The Reporting Conferences are completed and we thank all our parents who were able to attend. Whilst we have Reporting Conferences twice a year, we do urge all parents to make either an appointment or contact their child’s teacher should there be any issue related to academic, social or emotional reasons. The class teacher is the first point of contact should you have anything you need to discuss relating to your child’s schooling. Teachers are available for informal meetings before school at 8:50am, but if you feel you need more than 10 minutes (as instruction begins promptly at 9am) you can make an appointment for a mutually convenient time either before school or after school. I remind all members of our community that my door is always open to hear any cares, concerns or compliments. It is extremely important that we develop a productive partnership with our parent community to ensure all students can achieve their highest potential. We recognise that in order to be successful in school, our students need support from both the home and school, knowing that a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for student success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities, asking that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring: 1) Attendance at school daily and arrival on time, ready for the day’s learning experience; 2) Daily reading to develop a love for literature and to improve critical language skills; 3) Completion of all homework assignments given by teachers as per our homework policy devised by the Education Committee of School Council. 4) Sharing school experiences with you so that you are aware of daily school life. Working together we can achieve great results. There are many opportunities for parent involvement within the school: - classroom assistance with literacy and numeracy programs (especially reading) being a Class Representative volunteering when the need arises assisting at Working Bees and being a member of the Parents and Friends group, who do such an amazing job of raising funds for the school and creating a caring culture with events. A dynamic School Council is a vital component of any school and we have been lucky over the years. Whilst we have Reporting Conferences twice a year, we do urge all parents to make either an appointment or contact their child’s teacher should there be any issue related to academic, social or emotional reasons. The class teacher is the first point of contact should you have anything you need to discuss relating to your child’s schooling. Parent Bush Dance and School Workshops

Coming up next week, we are holding something special and something a little bit

different. It is the result of an idea a group of dedicated parents had at least 12 months

ago - one they have been working hard on bringing to our community. It’s their idea

for bringing together the whole Monty South Primary community and to welcome all

families and celebrate the beginning of the new school year with a Bush Dance.

The group have employed a fantastic bush band called ‘The Shenanigans’ to come to

Monty South to teach us all how to bush-dance in workshops and then follow up on the

following Thursday 23 February with a Community Bush Dance.

The bush dance workshops for all students will be held on Monday (20th February)

during school time where they’ll be taught all the moves, all the steps and how to put it

all together. The workshops are $10 per student and parents can make the necessary

payment on Compass.

On the Thursday 23 February, families are warmly invited to come along to school at 6

o’clock and the students will teach Mum or Dad and siblings, how to bush dance. The

band will have a “caller” who will also be helping and teaching everyone what to do. It

is a great opportunity for families to get out on the oval, listen to the great music and

have a whole lot of fun together.

As well as the music, there will be food vans here for the evening from 5 o’clock –

gourmet hot dogs, veggie burgers & salads, gourmet icypoles and more! But if you

don’t want to purchase food, just bring your own picnic!

Everyone is encouraged to dress up in Aussie bush-themed costumes – check shirts,

hats, boots, jeans or skirts or whatever you feel comfortable dancing in! We’ll have

some prizes on the night for the best costumes.

I can’t wait! And I’m sure everyone is going to have heaps of fun!

School Council Elections As per the notice on Compass and the item in the last edition of The Hoot, we are calling for nominations for the 2017 vacancies. All government schools in Victoria have a School Council, a legally formed body that is given the power to set the key directions of a school within centrally approved guidelines. A School Council, therefore, is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students. Definitely worth considering! And you can self-nominate so you don’t have to go out and lobby for people to nominate you.

Request from a family We would like to ask for your cooperation in a very important matter. One of the children at our school in Year 1 is receiving chemotherapy, which has a number of side effects. He won’t be able to attend school in Term 1 because of the side effects but even more importantly because his white blood cells will be very low. Leukaemia cells live in white blood cells, and the white blood cells are the ones that help fight off infections. So to kill the cancer they kill the white blood cells, therefore making the student extremely susceptible to infection and disease. That is why the

family need to be so diligent in regards to, personal hygiene and they do everything possible for the whole family to stay healthy, which is where the rest of the school can play a part. His older brother is also at our school in Year 3 and is at risk of taking infections and childhood diseases, such as chicken pox, home. It is very important therefore, that you

let us know immediately if your child develops chicken pox, measles, pneumonia etc so

we can ensure the boy in Year 3 stays home. Your child is at no risk whatsoever from this situation. However, the health and wellbeing of one of his/her fellow students does depend on your help and cooperation.

Congratulations to our 2017 School Captains. I am sure they will do an excellent job and continue the great work our MSPS captains have been doing since 2008.

Lunchtime Clubs available this year

Apart from the groups that are conducted by outside user pay groups such as:

Kelly Sports

Tennis Train

Instrumental Music

Drama Time we also run a number of lunchtime activities for the students who do not wish to be outside every day. There is of course, Lunchtime Library and the Lego Club, which has been running for a number of years. This year, we are going to offer a Board Game Club as well as a possible ‘Maker Club’ to be formed in Term 2. A Maker Club for those who enjoy creating, tinkering and inventing things. This will involve learning new skills and incorporating technology. Activities include:- coding, Lego, 3D design and printing, electronics, origami and craft. We will have more information as it comes closer to Term 2. Then, we will be again running Kids’ Shed as well as making the garden and chooks available a few times a week. So there is lots to do apart from playing with friends in the more active parts of the playground.

Note from the Department of Education re Asbestos labelling

Dear Parent As part of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s Health and Safety Management Plan, new labelling will be installed at our school. The labels remind people to contact school reception prior to undertaking any works at the school, to ensure they have up-to-date information from the school’s asbestos register. Asbestos - which was used extensively in building materials in the past but is now banned - is considered safe unless damaged or in poor condition. The new labels form part of a comprehensive program to ensure Victorian government schools remain safe. Children’s safety is our number one priority. That is why we are taking this extra step as a precaution.

Go Laura

Laura (Corrigan) Duryea has taken 12 months leave to pursue her football career in the AFWL. She has been playing so well, featuring in the Best on Ground, and I know many of the staff and our families have been attending the games to cheer her on - including Nick Mc Murtrie and Oliver Scott pictured below. Both boys braved the very wet conditions in the first game at Cranbourne to cheer Laura on. Nick is a Roos fan but Ollie is a Demon supporter and would have loved the win last week.

MSPS Achievers-

Congratulations to Billy Cooper and Cadel McColl who were awarded their Grey Wolf Award as part of their Cub Scouts program. To earn the highest award in the Cub Scout Section, you are required to do a number of activities, including participating in 4

outdoor activities and completing 4 Level 2 badges. Of course, there are a number of other things to do but it is a 12 month process and it requires, persistence and dedication to successfully complete all the activities. I couldn’t think of two better boys that Billy and Cadel to achieve this Cub Scout honour. We are very proud and thrilled for you both.

Have a great weekend everyone.

PREP Classroom Clippings

This week in Prep… Wow! What a great start to the school year! Congratulations to all of the Preps for a fantastic first

few weeks. A big thank you to the Buddies for assisting in this smooth transition.

Learning Focuses

Maths – We have been learning to count and recognise numbers from 0-20. The students have been using

hands on materials to count and make collections of numbers.

Reading – Students have been introduced to the reading routine and have been learning how to read to

self and read to someone. We have been focusing on the three ways to read a book; read the pictures,

read the words, retell the story.

Writing – We have been learning that what we think we can say and what we say we can write. The

students have been planning, composing and recording their own sentences to share with the class.

Camp Quality On Friday the 10th of February, we had a visit from Kylie and Dean, the

puppet stars from Camp Quality. The students watched a performance

that discussed Cancer and the effects that this disease can have on young

people. Following the performance students participated in an open

discussion in the classroom.

TRIBES Students have been introduced to the five agreements of the TRIBES program,

that aim to create a sense of community within the classroom and school

environment. Students have actively participated in activities that

encourage the development of ‘Personal Best’, ‘Right to think’, ‘Appreciations,

no put downs’, ‘Mutual Respect’ and ‘Attentive Listening’. They have also take

part in activities designed to strengthen relationships with their peers.

Munch and Crunch Munch and crunch is a small fruit or vegetable snack that can be eaten in the classroom at around 10am. Please

ensure that your child has a small fruit or vegetable snack, packaged separately to allow for easy access during this

time.

YEAR 1 Classroom Clippings

It has been a fantastic start to the school year in Year 1. The students have settled into their new classes, classrooms and routines and are ready for a fun year of learning.

Last Friday the Year 1’s watched a puppet show presented by Camp Quality. The students learnt about cancer and important messages related to cancer through an entertaining performance.

Next week your child will be involved in:

Reading

The students will be continuing to consolidate their understanding of each aspect of the Daily 5 routine including the whole class focus, rotational activities and reflection time. The focus for the week will be understanding, asking and answering literal comprehension questions.

Writing The students will be learning how to write a recount and how to sequence events in a correct order. They will be writing a recount about their daily morning routine. A focus will be placed on the correct placement of capital letters and full stops and correct letter formation.

Spelling The students will be working on Rule 2 ‘The letter c before e, i or y says s (cent, city, cycle), but followed by any other letter says k (cat, cot, cut).

Mathematics The students will be revising time to the hour and half hour by reading and drawing the time on analogue clocks. They will also be learning about open-ended math problems, what they are, how to approach them and how to work in a group to solve them.

Inquiry This semester the topic for Inquiry is ‘Does it matter if it’s black or white?’. The students have brainstormed their ideas about what this topic means to them and have discussed this at home with their families. Students will be sharing and classifying items that they have brought in from home that represent this topic.

YEAR 4 Classroom Clippings The Year 4 students have had a wonderful start to the year! The transition back to school has been smooth, with 4A and 4L

especially excited to settle into their brand-new classroom. This week in literacy, we have been practising writing emails and

making predictions while reading. In mathematics, we have been learning about place value and using our problem-solving skills to

tackle open-ended tasks.

Next week your child will be involved in:

Reading Developing comprehension strategies to support a deeper understanding of the text. Students will focus on making

inferences while reading. Inferences are made by noticing clues in the story and linking them to prior knowledge to

draw conclusions.

Writing Continuing to learn how to write and send emails for different purposes and audiences.

Spelling

Revising Rule 7 – the five jobs of silent final ‘e’

Rule 7

Secret Agent Silent Final ‘e’:

Page 12: Welcome to Prep - Montmorency South Primary Schoolmontysouth.vic.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Hoot-Feb-News-N… · Leukaemia cells live in white blood cells, ... Grace-Bella

Job #1: Silent final ‘e’ jumps over the consonant to make the vowel say its second sound. E.g. In ‘time’ the Silent Final ‘e’ jumps over the ‘m’ to make ‘i’ say its second sound.

Job #2: Silent final ‘e’ stops ‘u’ or ‘v’ being at the end of the word. E.g. In ‘blue’ the Silent Final ‘e’ stops ‘u’ from being at the end of the word.

Job #3: Silent final ‘e’ makes ‘c’ or ‘g’ say its second sound. E.g. In ‘charge’ the Silent Final ‘e’ makes ‘g’ say its second sound.

Job #4: Silent final ‘e’ makes sure that every syllable has a vowel.

E.g. In ‘lit tle’ the Silent Final ‘e’ makes sure the second syllable has a vowel.

Job #5: Silent final ‘e’ is an imposter – it has NO job!

Mathematics Continuing to investigate place value through skills-based workshops and open-ended problem solving tasks.

Inquiry Unit Continuing to explore science through experiments and discussion.

YEAR 5 Classroom Clippings

The Year 5 students have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each other through our Tribes activities. One of our sessions involved the students working in small groups in a task called, ‘Climb through a hole in a sheet of paper!’ They received an A4 piece of paper and their task was for everyone in their group to squeeze through a hole in the paper. They were only able to use scissors and it had to be a continuous piece of paper. After lots of trial and error, the groups were successful in achieving their goal. Here are some photos of our wonderful students demonstrating how they could all fit inside one piece of paper. Maybe you could try it at home!

Page 13: Welcome to Prep - Montmorency South Primary Schoolmontysouth.vic.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Hoot-Feb-News-N… · Leukaemia cells live in white blood cells, ... Grace-Bella

YEAR 6 Classroom Clippings Year 6 students have settled into their new grades and the Christmas break already seems like a distant memory. In year 6, our students have spent the past couple of weeks getting to know their new classmates and teachers, with many ‘Building Classroom Communities’ activities. All students are keen to take on their new responsibilities, as role models and leaders of the school. Every student has a special Prep ‘Buddy’ to welcome to Montmorency South, and many students are familiarising themselves with their new Captain roles. In writing over the next few weeks, our focus is to revise the structure of an exposition, or persuasive text. We are beginning with the topic that all year 6’s are experts in – themselves. Their task is to write a persuasive text to detail why they would be a perfect choice for their class’s Junior School Council representative. During this task we are revising paragraph structure, persuasive devices and language features that good writers use to convince their audience. During reading over the coming weeks, we are looking at the ‘Super Six Comprehension Strategies’. This week we have looked at how students can make connections between the text and themselves, other texts and the world around them, history and in current news or events. Next week year six students will be looking at another super six comprehension strategy; visualising. In numeracy, we are consolidating number and place value understanding for the majority of term one. From analysis of testing data we will be focusing on the main areas of need, which are estimating and rounding whole numbers, rounding decimals and dividing by one digit, including remainders and understanding place value to hundredths and thousandths. Our inquiry unit is starting to take shape and we are looking at the origins of human beings and what knowledge or theories students have about the human race. We will work towards finding out similarities and differences between students at our school and people around the world.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden This week in the kitchen….. This week in the kitchen, we have talked about ‘eating a rainbow’. For optimum health, it is important to eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables of all colours. We have created and enjoyed eating a colourful feast of herb and oat scones, zucchini fritters with haloumi, zoodles with a simple tomato sauce, Jamie Oliver’s rainbow salad with yogurt dressing and a summer fruit salad with a zingy lime syrup. The zoodles were a revelation to some students. Apparently, zucchini noodles taste just like pasta when they are covered in a tomato pasta sauce. All recipes can be found on compass. Click on Communities, then click on School Documentation and you will find the Monty South Recipe book. Recipes are indexed by category. If you have any queries or if you would like to become a volunteer please contact Cathryn Hulme (Kitchen) 0419322782 Or feel free to speak to your class teacher. From the garden... This week in the garden, we have been looking at the science of seed dispersal. All plants have a unique method of dispersing seed, which has evolved over thousands of years to increase the distribution of the plant across suitable environments. The 'Peter Pan' seed dispersal theory helps explain some of the different techniques that are used by plants to release their seed to new locations, where seedlings can grow without competition from parent plants. It's also a fun and memorable theory for the students. Our eager Grade 3 students have commenced their tool licences, whereby they learn how to use all the garden tools safely and effectively. Thank you to all the people on chicken duty over the holidays and throughout the Term. If you're interested in this rewarding job, please put your name down at the office. Thank you to all the parents and Eltham men's group members that assisted with the construction of the timber frames for our Wicking Beds! They look fabulous and are now ready for the Grade 6 students finish constructing the beds, at the same time learning If you'd like to be involved in the garden classes or projects, please contact the office. P&F Update - Welcome back!! Welcome back to MSPS for another year and a very big welcome to all of our new families joining MSPS in 2017! For those who are unsure, the Parents & Friends Group (P&F), are responsible for the fundraising activities and events at our school. The funds we raise during the year contribute to making MSPS a better place for all of the students by improving the playground and other play spaces.

There are regular updates about P&F events in The Hoot each term however, ALL parents and friends of the school are welcome to join the group at any time. We are always looking for new ideas and every little bit of help is appreciated. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Staffroom.

P&F activities are also listed in the 'what's on/calendar' section of The Hoot.

Class Representatives for 2017 We are also looking for CLASS REPRESENTATIVES. The role of the class rep is to facilitate social interaction amongst the parents of your class. We ask that class reps compile a list of parents within the class who are willing to have their details (phone number and email) circulated to the class to facilitate catch ups, play dates etc. From time to time, it would also be helpful if class reps contacted their class regarding assistance with specific P&F events such as the school disco and movie night.

If you have not already done so, please provide your email address to your class teacher. If you would like to be the rep for your class, please advise your teacher or contact Nicci Green at [email protected] or 0448 506 615.

What's coming up? The following events are on the P&F calendar for Term 1: Wed 1st March - P&F Annual General Meeting 8pm in the staffroom - all welcome! All positions are up for relection. If you would like to join the group, please email [email protected]. Further information will be distributed shortly.

Hot Cross Bun Afternoon Tea - Fri 17th March It is tradition at MSPS to hold a hot cross bun afternoon tea where the children order hot cross buns for snack time. This will be held on Friday 17th March. Order forms will be sent home in coming weeks.

Casual Clothes Day/Easter Hamper Donation and Raffle Each year, P&F run an Easter Raffle. Students are asked to send a donation to school for the raffle and wear casual clothes. Friday 17th March will be a casual clothes day. Students are asked to bring an item for the Easter Hampers. The raffle for the Easter Hampers will be drawn in the last week of school at assembly. Raffle tickets will be sent home in the coming weeks. PLEASE NOTE: Casual clothes day will coincide with Hot Cross Bun Afternoon Tea.

Hot Cross Bun Drive - Thurs 30th March The annual hot cross bun drive will be held in the last week of term. Hot cross buns can be ordered in half dozen packs and will be delivered to the school on Thursday 30th March.

How do I get more information? If you would like to find out more about P&F or be on the P&F mailing list, please give your email address to your teacher or email [email protected] and you will be added to the distribution list.
