Bilingual Approach
To create a model with a strong emphasis
on contextualised learning within a
language rich environment. As often as is
possible the teaching of vocabulary,
phrases and grammatical structures will be
embedded in the context of class topics
and the social curriculum.
The Year Three and Four
Schemes Of Work
The Year Three and Four Bilingual Schemes of
Work has strong links to the English National
Curriculum expectations in Spelling,
Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG)
The content taught in IPC topic lessons will
reflect the grammatical expectations put in place for the end of Year Three/Four.
Cross curricular Links
The use of the morning literacy and maths
sessions to support and fully demonstrate
understanding of the key concepts taught in the
afternoon
This is NOT re-teaching the subject, but it
allows the teacher to tailor literacy and maths
session to reflect the themes taught in French in
the afternoon.

KS2 Draft Timetable
Reading and Writing
The children in our current Year 3
have now completed the Taoki
scheme of work, which enables
most children to phonetically
decode in French and also become
familiar with key vocabulary and
an initial grasp of key French
grammar concepts.
At the start of Year 4 these will
be briefly revised.
The Year 4 French Language Programme of Study
The program of study can be viewed via the Bilingual tab on our school website.
Twinning Project
Our KS2 bilingual classes have enjoyed sending and receiving letters from Ecole Louise Weiss school.
Year 3 French Writing Samples
Twinning opportunities with Ecole Louise Weiss school have raised the standard of the children’s ability to write in French.
Homework
KS2 bilingual homework normally focuses on French grammar.
Assessment The Language Ladder
The Language ladder is the assessment tool we have chosen to use. This tool enables us to assess pupils development in French across speaking, listening, reading and writing
The children in Reception and year one are expected to be working at the breakthrough, level 1-3
By year six our expectation would be that
pupils are working at Intermediate level
7-9
Level 3: I can understand the main points from
a short written text in clear printed script.
Level 2: I can understand and read out
familiar written phrases.
Level 1: I can recognize and read out a
few familiar words and phrases.
Level 5: I can understand the main points and
opinions in the written texts from various contexts.
Level 4: I can understand the main points and some
of the detail from short written texts in familiar
contexts.

The Social Curriculum To develop further the
children’s oracy skills, our social curriculum will encourage children to speak about every day
issues and topics appropriate for their age. This time will be built into our playtimes as well as
our curriculum.
I can repeat words and phrases after the teacher. I can imitate/copy pronunciation with some success. I can speak clearly and confidently when reproducing simple words. I may need some support from spoken or visual clues. I can give basic information using words and set phrases from
memory e.g. my age, favourite colour. I can read words out loud with correct pronunciation. I can be understood by others. I can practise asking and answering questions with a friend. I can answer simple questions and give short, simple answers. I can learn and say several sentences on a topic or finger rhymes. I can use short phrases to express personal responses e.g. to say
whether or not I like something. I can use words/phrases from memory and sometimes change
words e.g. use a different adjective to describe a pet. I can use my tone of voice and gestures to help others understand
me. I can learn and say poems or a non-fiction text. I can devise and perform simple role plays. I can ask and answer simple questions and talk about my interests. I can have short conversations that I have prepared, with
pictures/clues to help me. I can have simple conversations and give my opinions. I can put new words or phrases into conversations correctly. I can use my pronunciation and intonation well when I speak. I can read or listen to something and re-tell it or discuss the main
points. I can perform to an audience (recite a short narrative, read aloud,
develop a sketch, give a presentation, role play to perform). I can describe incidents or my own experiences in a clear voice.

Guide:
DELF Examinations
• From Year 2 onwards, teaching staff carefully assess each child’s suitability for the DELF Prim examinations.
• These exams take place in formal settings with an external examiner and test children’s reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in French.
• During the Autumn Term Parent Consultations, your child’s class teacher will discuss the most suitable options for your child based on his/her progress.
KS2 bilingual classes have opportunities to visit Lambeth Academy to explore bilingual learning through various speaking and listening activities.
