Welcome to our SEPTEMBER 2013 Newsletter
What did we learn in August…
…in the Rosella Room …in the Lorikeet Room
This month the Rosellas have been learning
how to work as a team and listening and
follow directions. Throughout the day the
Rosellas get many opportunities to practice
these important skills and what better way to
practice these skills is a game of tenpin
bowling. Miss Helen set up the game and the
children just loved it! Miss Helen carefully
explained the rules and together they worked
as team to play, Johnny and Marlon helped
set up the pins and each child got to have a
turn but was lots of fun and the children
learnt how to work as a team!
Children in Rossella Room have been
learning to be patient when waiting for their
peers. In the room children have had
different experiences to promote this. We had
the children sit down and wait for their
turns, they sat in a circle and had the
wooden car step toy for all of them to have a
turn with, and they had red, blue and brown
toy cars. The educators showed the different
colours to the children and said it clearly to
the children so they could understand it.
Educators put more effort to redirect them to
the focus of this month in rosella Room
which is learning about taking turns.
Alexander demonstrated this by having a
turn with the car and then giving it to his
friend.
This month the Lorikeets have been learning
and focusing on, Taking Turns and Sharing.
Miss Amanda and Miss Narda planned a
variety of activities that encouraged and
enhanced the Lorikeets to interact with one
another by sharing or taking turns with the
different activities throughout August. The
Lorikeets have been waiting for turns and
asking for turns as the month went on.
The Lorikeets were very excited to see John
the gardener add a new garden to our centre,
he first dug out a small tree then afterwards
he placed new soil and then added plants and
flowers. The Lorikeets then watched Miss
Amanda plant some strawberries in and then
all children took turns to water them.
Parent Reminders:
1. Please label or initial your children’s clothes and
items so they don’t get placed in the “lost and
found” box.
2. Encourage your child to leave toys home as they
are not our responsibility if broken or lost. Bed
comforts are ok as they are kept in their bags.

What did we learn in August…
… in the Kookaburra Room … in the Pre-School Group
This month we have been talking to the
Kookaburra children about showing respect for our toys and resources. The children had the perfect
opportunity to show their educators what they had learnt about being responsible and looking after their toys
when they were given a new kitchen play set and a new work station with
tools, for their indoor play area. The children have been reminding each other to play with their toys nicely and
not to leave them on the floor when they finish playing with them.
Kookaburra children understand that this is also a safety rule we follow in our room.
Another highlight of August in the Kookaburra Room was our new garden and vegetable patch.
Children have been practicing their respect for the environment by taking
care of the flowers and vegetables they have planted at the beginning of the month. 3 groups of 2 children have
been rostered on daily to water our plants and to inform their friends how
they have taken care of them. Educators will be extending on this learning by teaching children about
plant life cycle. We welcome any suggestions from you to include in this
learning experience.
Welcome to our new section from the ‘Pre-School
Group’.
In this issue of our newsletter, we will give you a
brief idea of what children aim to learn during
their Pre-school experiences.
Grow ELC Pre-School program encourages the
children to participate in different experiences
including but not limited to painting, tracing,
writing, IPad use, storytelling, solving
mathematical problems, and science, which
further develop children’s skills needed for when
they go to Big school.
In every play that the children are involved in on
a daily basis, helps in its own way to develop
those skills including but not limited to…
social skills, emotional skills, artistic skills,
communication (receptive & expressive) skills,
and self-help skills.
In addition to the above, during our Preschool
program, we also focus on:
-Fine motor – cutting, writing, drawing, and
finger grasps
-Reading – recognising letters, naming labels,
recognising name,
-Concepts – numbers, letters, shapes, colours,
opposites, similarities and differences
-Learning through play – practicing all the
above skills in their very own way during free
play.
Our following newsletters will include specific
experiences and learning stories with photos of
what our pre-school children learn during their
pre-school programs. If you have any
suggestions or feedback, please see one of our
Kookaburra educators.

OUR NEW RECYCLING BOXES
Our focus on a sustainable environment and recycling
is growing every day. We have provided recycling boxes
under our parent pockets in the Kookaburra Room for
parents to help us recycle. It is very surprising to see
what our children can create out of recycled materials.

Inspirational Quote of the Month:
What’s New?
As of 2nd of September 2013, children will be taking their hats home daily.
Please remind your child to bring in their hats every day as we take
sun safety seriously and follow a ‘Not Hat No Play’ policy.
NQS Element 2.1.3 Effective hygiene practices are promoted and implemented.
What is the ‘Incursion/Event levy’ payment?
The incursion/event Levy payment (which equates to $10.00 a
month) will replace all current fundraising which covers
extracurricular activities/ events and also upgrades resources.
Note: We feel this is a fairer option for all families as with current
fundraising; some families raise a lot while others do not contribute,
but still have access to the activities.

Updates on our AUGUST Events…
Friendship Day – 2 August 2013
Friendship day was filled with many activities that allowed the
children to celebrate their frienships and relationships.
We read stories about Friendships.
We made friendship trees where each child wrote their name or
placed their picture/thumbprint on the branches.
Jeans for Genes Day – 2 August 2013
Thank you to the families who donated to Jeans for Genes day. We raised $20.00 which has been sent to the ‘Children’s medical research institute’.
What a great Father’s Day celebration we had this
year, with many of our dads & families attending.
THANK YOU to all.
Children have very much enjoyed spending the
afternoon with their family and their friend’s
families.
We have received feedback from a few of
our families that they have enjoyed the
celebrations too and the highlight for
them was the children’s performances!
Father’s Day Afternoon Tea – Friday 30th August 2013
4.30pm - 5.30pm
Favourite Character Day 19 August 2013
Grow children seemed very excited coming to the centre dressed up in their favourite character’s costume. Educators were prepared for this special event by planning a variety of learning experiences, such as mix & match to create own character, reading books about favourite childhood fairytale characters and drawings of their favourite characters. This experience has mainly extended our children’s social skills & language skills, where they were sharing their character’s stories with their peers & educators during their group time experiences.

Kids’ cough and cold medicine
On September 1, 2012 the Therapeutic Goods
Administration restricted the use of cough and cold
medicines to treat young children. This is because
of evidence of the medicine's potential harm to
children.
NPS Medicinewise spokesperson Aine Heaney
says in light of potential side effects she
recommends using some tried and true home
remedies such as plenty of rest and plenty of water
to assist in recovery.
If your child is sick please see your healthcare professional. Never give your children
medication intended for adult use. Always follow dosing instructions when administering
children’s medicine.
Giving medicines to children safely
and effectively
Small mistakes can cause big problems in little
bodies, so parents and carers need to know how to
give medicines to children safely. Knowing how to
accurately measure and administer medicines to
children will help to avoid accidental overdosing or
underdosing.
Watch Video:Children’s dosing on The Morning Show
Danielle Stowasser from NPS MedicineWise discusses correct dosing of medicine for children
with Dr Ginni Mansberg.
