From the Principal’s desk….Dear Parent and Friends,

Every Day CountsOne in four primary students and one in six secondary students do not attend school regularly, with research showing that their academic and social skills can suffer. Many parents do not realise the cumulative effect of allowing their child to take a day off every now and then, and one day a fortnight adds up to one year’s lost learning over a child’s schooling life.

Each Day missed puts your child behind and makes it harder for them to catch up; can lead to lower achievement in reading, writing and numeracy; can lead to gaps in learning and impact on social and emotional skills. What can we do in partnership:

✓ Developing positive routines for school

✓ Encouraging your child’s ‘can-do’ attitude

✓ Establishing life-long skills and good habits

Welcome to Week 7. A huge note of thanks to everyone who

made our celebrations of Catholic Schools Week such a success

last week. The turn out on Thursday, with the beautiful rain, for

the Open Classrooms was a huge success. Thank you one and all

for being with us to celebrate our amazing school. It was a great

week with a Liturgy, tree planting projects, coding club activities

and the launch of Project Compassion among many other

activities. I was very proud of the Environmental Ministry last

week with their efforts with the tree planting. It is their goal to

plant trees around the perimeter of our school this year. This is

a vital part of our school community. The P&F meeting

will be held at the Commercial Hotel. Come along for

dinner from 6:00pm with the meeting commencing at

7:00pm.

The next fun event the P&F are organising is the Trivia

night, which is set down for Friday 13th of March. All

are welcome.

This Wednesday, 11th of March we have 16 students who will

be competing at the Diocesan Swimming carnival in Dubbo.

We wish these students all the best.

Gospel and Reflection: Matthew 17:1-9 The Transfiguration

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

His face shone like the sun

Whenever I think about Abram being called out of his own country to travel to a strange land I think of refugees and asylum seekers. Not knowing where you are going but hoping that it will be better is a dangerous thing to do. This is not the case for Christians. Our journey has been given to us quite clearly and in the Gospel today Peter, James and John are privileged to experience the Transfiguration which showed them the promise of glory. We are not blindly walking our journey. We know the promises and we know the One who has made the promises and he is completely trustworthy. In our case there is no risk at all. That is not to say that it will all be easy. The other side of it is that it will require suffering which will be supported by the hope given to us by Christ.

God Bless and have a wonderful Week

Anthony O’Leary

Religious Education News: Term 1, Week 7

Catholic Schools Week: Catholic Schools Week: What a week!! Last week we celebrated Catholic Schools Week by holding a number of activities and events that really showcased how proud we are to offer a Catholic education and the opportunities and experiences St. John’s Primary School has to offer our students and families. Our Year 6 Ministry students were instrumental in running most of the events and should be very proud of the leadership they demonstrated. It was fabulous to see so many parents and families support their children and connect with our school, particularly at our open classrooms session and BBQ Lunch. Many photos were taken throughout the week and have been posted on our Facebook page. Please visit the page (if you haven’t already) to see how we celebrated Catholic Schools Week.

Sacramental Meetings: Last week our Parent Information Sessions were held for parents of ALL students receiving a sacrament throughout the year. If you are a parent who was not able to attend one of the meetings, yet you wish for your child to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation (if they are in Year 6), First Holy Communion (if they are in Year 3) or Reconciliation (if they are in Year 2) you will need to contact Rosie Hosking at St. Brigid’s Presbytery. Rosie can be contacted via email [email protected] or phone: 68824233. This Wednesday 11th March Rosie will run two extra meetings, one at 9:30 and one at 4:30. Please rsvp to Rosie if you wish to attend one of these meetings.

Meeting 4 Mass: Thank You to our Year 5 families who attended Meeting 4 Mass yesterday with their teachers. This Sunday, we invite our Year 6 grade to Meeting 4 Mass.

Masonic Village: 1 Blue visited the Masonic Village last Friday and had a blast! The village have a new resident: Ollie the Dog, who of course was a hit. According to Miss Cusack the students performed beautiful songs and engaged in many interesting conversations. Well done 1 Blue!

MASS TIMES: St. Brigid’s Church: Saturday - 6:00 pm Sunday - 9:00am and 6:00pm.St. Laurence’s Church: Sunday -7:30 am Wednesday 9.30am

Take care,

Paula Clifford

Religious Education Coordinator ([email protected])

Practical tips on attending Mass: This week, families within our school will receive a magazine that addresses Mass and the impact it can have on the spiritual life of all family members. The magazine has a great article on the many reasons we as Catholics, should attend Mass and also offers tips on how to answer challenging questions from reluctant children. I would encourage parents to read this magazine and possibly keep it for future reference.
