The Musings of Our Pastor

When I made my way to Holy Trinity Parish from Celina a year ago, some of you were quite amazed to hear that I brought with me only 2 carloads of worldly things. In a rather deliberate and disciplined way, I have been making an effort in these latter years of life to live a bit more simply and with a lot less "stuff". Some of this transformation evolved out of my 5 mission outreach trips to Guatemala, which took place during my term as Pastor for St. Anthony, St. Joseph and St. Peter Parishes in the Fort Recovery area. While the people of Guatemala were extremely poor and living with pretty mea-ger resources, they sure seemed to manifest a spirit of joy amidst the challenging routine of daily life. This was an incredi-ble inspiration to me! Having moved umpteen different times during my years of priestly ministry, I also came to realize that packing and unpacking all sorts of "stuff", which often just cluttered up closets and collected dust, was just a huge waste of time and energy. As a consequence, the idea of trying to live a more humble and simple lifestyle with fewer worldly things to weigh me down beckoned me to downsize and attempt to get my belongings into just a few carloads in the instance of moving to other new priestly assignments. What a blessing this transformation has been for me!

Might there be some special graces or benefits in one's quest to live a bit more simply without being attached to so many worldly things? I do believe so. Let me explain. From the perspective of my own vocation as a Catholic priest and Missionary of the Precious Blood, I have always felt that a "spirit of detachment" from a vast array of worldly things and worldly pleasures is one of those noble ideals, which ought to shape or define my priestly life. To live in the "lap of luxury" or to indulge myself with top-of-the-line clothes, gourmet-style meals, exotic vacations, the "best" of everything, etc., could prove to be, in my opinion, a stumbling block in the cultivation of greater openness to God, holiness, and humility, which ought to be the fundamental focus of my priestly life. Hopefully, my own willingness to "give up" some significant things for Christ and for the work of the Church might be a source of inspiration to the people of God, especially some of our youth.

Another wonderful grace to be enjoyed by one's quest to live just a bit more simply is the reduction of some of the worry and stress and protective measures that seem to mushroom in our lives, when we have so many worldly things in our pos-session to look after. Should someone choose to ransack my house, there are few precious treasures for them to carry off! When it is time to go through the grave of death into God's Eternal Kingdom, there really are no keepsakes of any sig-nificant value for people to squabble about! The local Goodwill Store might be the most likely recipient of my meager be-longings or a nearby dumpster. Quite honestly, I do not develop "worry wrinkles" or sleepless nights or high blood pres-sure about worldly "stuff", due to my deliberate effort to maintain a humble and fairly simple lifestyle.

When Dad died at the early age of 57 and Mom eventually moved into town, my visits home were a tad bit uncomforta-ble on many occasions. The bedroom, just one of two in her house, which I used, was so cluttered up and so suffocating with lots of old things, which were unused and of little value to anyone. Sometimes it felt like I was holed up in a dingy storage closet! It was no use trying to persuade Mom to pitch the stuff because she had some mysterious attachment to everything, even to dresses she had not worn for well over 20 years! That bedroom, in fact, the whole house could have been enjoyed in a much more wholesome or refreshing, welcoming way, if the space was liberated from the "stuff" clutter-ing it up so much! I often chuckle as I drive past homes with 2 or 3 car garages, which cannot effectively be used for the purpose of parking the cars or trucks, just because all sorts of other things have filled them up. With a "spirit of detach-ment", and with a deliberate effort to live life a bit more simply, the space in the garage can be "re-purposed" for parking the family vehicles again! How wonderful that is, especially when you don't have to clean the cars or trucks of snow and ice during the Winter Season! What a grace or blessing this is to be celebrated by living life a bit more simply! Try it, you might just like it!

May you and your family find wonderful blessings in the Lord throughout the coming week. You are in my prayers.

Father Ken
