ANNOUNCEMENTS

5 JANUARY 2020 3 THE EPIPHA NY OF OUR LORD

The Musings of Our Pastor What are your looking for? If you really want to know, some of our youth or teens are looking for popularity, ac-ceptance and inclusion, especially as a basis for increased happiness in their everyday lives. What are you looking for? If you really want to know, some spouses in marriage are looking for clearer signs of fidelity or maturity or sensitiv-ity or honest communication within the partnership of their marriage, which has been weakened by missteps in some of these areas. What are you looking for? If you really want to know, some adults are looking for opportunities to have hon-est, open and respectful discussions about some of the big current issues impacting the well-being of our nation or world, which can be shared together in a civil and intelligent way, even though the people involved may have very differ-ent religious or political affiliations. What are you looking for? Are you, in fact, looking for Christ amidst all of the flurry and distractions of life's day-to-day activities?

It is the Christmas Season and on this Feast of the Epiphany, we accompany the Magi (also known as the As-trologers, the Three Kings, or the Wise Men) as they embark on a journey somewhere. We can almost hear their neigh-bors and friends demanding to know: "What are you looking for?" Quite frankly, the Magi may not even have known themselves, but that bright star in the sky, common folklore suggested, acclaimed the birth of a king, so they followed the star looking for the Newborn King. That search and that long journey brought the Magi into a most sacred encounter with Jesus, the Eternal Son of God, cradled in the arms of Mary in Bethlehem. Did they grasp fully what they were "graced" to perceive with their eyes in this encounter? We just do not know. Were their lives fundamentally changed because of this sacred encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ? We just do not know. We do know, however, that the sacred encounter with Jesus in Bethlehem happened precisely because the Magi were willing to go looking for the Newborn King, even though they could not calculate the risks and sacrifices or costs involved. They surely had no clue or certainty at the outset that they would even find what they were looking for! Nonetheless, they felt compelled to take up the search and go looking for???????

No doubt, many of us do go looking for Jesus by habit within the confines of a church and religious moments of prayer or worship. What about in other places, in other situ-ations or in other experiences of day-to-day life, do we go looking for Christ in these things? The word "epiphany" means "manifestation", and our Catholic faith would chal-lenge us to fully understand that the saving presence and love of Jesus Christ is often manifested in marvelous, timely or beneficial ways to us through different persons, situations or experiences in everyday life. Unfortunately, we may miss the "grace" or the joy and dividends of such manifestations of the Divine Presence of Jesus because we are not looking for or expecting such sacred encounters with Jesus within all that is so terribly mundane and routine in our lives. Hence, on this most solemn Feast of the Epiphany, maybe we could set out on a journey through the New Year of 2020, along with the Magi, and keep looking for, search-ing for, and celebrating all of those sacred encounters we might have with Jesus we outside of the environment of the church itself. Please do remember, too, that other people ought to have some sacred encounters with Jesus through their interactions with you in the midst of daily life. God bless you and your family throughout the coming New Year!
