2:40-3:10 Writer’s Workshop

3:10-3:40 Science/Social Studies

Resource Schedule Six day rotating schedule:

Day 1: Art Day 2: Technology Day 3: Guidance Day 4: Music Day 5: Library (return books) Day 6: PE (tennis shoes) Students will write days in planner on Friday for the next week! These are also listed on my newsletters! *Encore will rotate on half days between PPS and PES.

Super Organized Binder

• Students should bring S.O.S. binders to and from school each day.

• Planner- Encore Days, Read 20 minutes

• Please use the zipper pouch for any money or notes to me. Please make sure all money is bagged and labeled! – Student name, amount, and purpose!

• Students are responsible for checking binders and taking care of the contents inside.

• Please remind students to empty binders throughout the week.

Balanced Literacy • Integrate reading, writing, and word study.

• 20-30 min. Whole group mini-lesson and three 30 min. small group instruction groups

• Students will rotate through various literacy activities (Daily 5): read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, word work, work on writing

• During small group instruction we will focus on word study, fluency, and comprehension!

*Your foldable is a great resource for what you can do at home to foster reading!

Math

• Mini Lesson followed by two math rotations

– Paper practice, games, computer, teacher

– IXL, XTRA Math, other games matching our skill

• Heavy use of manipulatives

– Moving students through the concrete, representational, and abstract stages of

learning

Performance Matters Online Testing

• New for second graders • Math testing completed using this online

program • We will scaffold students towards

independence with this throughout the year!

• I will update you of this progression each quarter via newsletters!

• 1st quarter students will be taking paper and pencil only!

We will be focusing on only one of these units at a time.

First quarter we will be learning about:

– Science: Investigations, Habitats

– S.S: Civics, Maps & Globes, Citizenship

*Students will be assessed by in class activities/projects/tests.

*Study guides will be sent home for some units.

• Family Fun Homework choice boards! – October Family Fun will come home on

Monday, September 30th!

• Read at least 15/20 minutes each night • Review science/social studies study guide (when sent home)

Celebrations

• Thank you to those who have signed up for our mini celebrations! You

have been given a celebration sign up calendar! I will also be sure to remind you as the date approaches in our newsletters!

• Per the student handbook, students are not allowed to bring in edible birthday treats for birthdays. You may, however, eat lunch with your child (12:10-12:40)

• I would love to buy your child ice cream at the cafeteria for their

birthday! Please let me know if you would prefer I not do this for your child and I will come up with an alternative

• Per the student handbook, Birthday party invitations are not allowed to be passed out at school per school policy. Refer to the PTO directory or our classroom directory for invites to be sent out.

Field Trips

• VA Living Museum – October 23rd – Permission slip coming soon!

• Jamestown – May 20th

Information will be sent home. *chaperones welcome

Ways to Pay:

– If you would only like your child to get breakfast or a snack at school on certain days, you may send in a note to put a block on the account
