Thinking is Exercise for the Brain!
• Eat well!
• Sleep well!
• Drink plenty of water!
• Water bottles with lids are allowed. Please no juice or sports drinks. Reusable bottles are great but must be leak proof!
Daily Assignments
• Students will fill out a daily half sheet with assignment information. This information will also be available on the website daily.
• There is a checklist on the back to help students become more independent in preparing for the next school day.
• All assignments are due the following day unless otherwise specified. Assignments are not taken for a grade but are an expectation and are logged.
• Reading log is ESSENTIAL to success!• Nightly practice of math facts is ESSENTIAL to success!• Math, Word Study, & Handwriting homework will be assigned
but will vary.• Assignment notebooks
Absent Work
• Absent work is due the day following the student’s return to school.
• A formal homework request must be made through the absent line or homework will not be sent to the office at the end of the day.
• If students are absent consecutive days please make arrangements to pick up student work.
• Please return absent work form with all completed work.
Reading Research
• “among all the ways children spent their time, reading books was the best predictor of several measures of reading achievement”
• Students who read 35 minutes a day are exposed to 2 million words a year and are likely to score in the 90th percentile for reading.
• Students who do not read each day are exposed to only 8,000 words a year and are likely to score in the 10th percentile for reading.

Reading log
• Assigned daily Monday – Thursday• The expectation is 20 minutes each night• Combination of assigned reading, free choice
reading and poetry• Students will write 3-5 sentences about their
reading • Collected each day• Book It pizza coupons• Don’t forget math facts practice!!!
Daily Schedule
• 4 Blocks Method – Research proven approach• Guided Reading Block• Making Words Block• Writing Block• Self Selected Reading Block• Math Block• Science/Social Studies are taught in a separate
block and incorporated in the reading block• Handwriting instruction and practice
Scholastic Book Club
• A magazine will be sent home monthly with order information.
• Ordering online will earn you a $5 coupon to purchase a book
• Our classroom earns points to purchase books for reading, science, social studies and our classroom library
• Go to our class webpage for ordering information
Student of the Week
• A student will be selected each week.
• The student will receive an “All About Me” poster at the end of the school week, probably on Friday.
• Poster is due the following Thursday.
• Student of the week will present their poster to the class and may bring a show and tell item.

Field Trips*Little Red Schoolhouse during First Quarter
*Shedd Aquarium in late winter/early spring
*Information will be sent home about chaperoning for the spring field trip.
Birthdays• Celebrate half birthdays for summer birthdays
• New district policy – no food items for birthdays
• Other options suggested but not necessary –donate a book, birthday shirt or send pencils & erasers
Arrival &Dismissal
• Earliest arrival 8:15 (Math begins promptly at 8:30)
• Dismissal begins at 2:45
• If there are any sudden changes to your child’s arrival/dismissal please contact the main office.
• If you know ahead of time, send a written note stating your child’s change in arrival/dismissal plans
Lunch• Hot lunch available for $2.40 (milk is included)• Milk $.60• Hot lunch is available on all full days and team
days; no lunch on half day dismissals• If students arrive after 8:40 they will not be
placed in the lunch count and will need to bring a lunch
• If students forget to bring or order a lunch and a parent can’t be reached the student will be given cereal for lunch.

Before you leave…
• Turn in signed authorization form to the basket by the pocket chart
• Make sure you signed the sign in sheet in the hallway
• Leave the label with your contact information on your child’s desk
• Write a letter back to your son/daughter• Sign up for an available
parent teacher conferencesession in the hallway
