Training COTC Recruit Training (RT) LT Jeff Modic

Contact information for the COTC is as follows:LT Jeff Modic(760) [email protected]

This is a long letter; however, it contains information to give each cadet the best possible chance of success. Please review the information listed below carefully, and in its entirety, with family members and/or your officers to help ensure a safe and positive training experience for all.

Please keep in mind that this training gives you all the basics that you will need to prepare you for your coming years in the Sea Cadet program. You are going to learn customs and courtesies. You will become squared away and sharp in appearance. You will have a new found confidence and knowledge that you can take back to your unit, and last of all, you will mature. Everyone will see the difference in you after you have completed this course of training and you have graduated. This is the portal that leads to your future advancement and that allows you go on to promotion and advanced training.

If you are flying in for this training...Airport pickup on arrival and delivery to the airport on departure will be arranged. Please email [email protected] with your flight information and cell phone number. You must arrive on July 7th and depart on July 20th (after 1 pm). More information concerning pick-up and drop-off at the airport will be given to you after communication has been established.

Training Objectives

Cadets will be guided through their training evolution by a team of NSCC Officers and Instructors, experienced staff cadets, and experienced Naval and Marine Corps active duty reserve officers and non-commissioned officers.

Recruit Training is the Cadets introduction to military routine and discipline, and is the Cadets first step towards advancing in the Sea Cadet Program. Cadets spend two weeks learning basic Navy subjects, elementary seamanship, basic damage control, and quarter’s maintenance. Additionally, Cadets participate in Physical Fitness Training to meet the standard of the USNSCC for their age and sex. While attending Recruit Training, a Cadet must pass a Physical Fitness Test in order to receive credit for completing Recruit Training. Successful completion of Recruit Training is required before attending Advanced Training.

Preparing for RT

In preparation for training, the following reminders will create the best possible conditions for Recruit success:

● Establish a regular sleeping pattern. Go to bed early and get up early. Boot camp reveille can be as early at 0500.

● BREAK IN YOUR FOOTWEAR! This cannot be overemphasized. Recruits will be on their feet for long periods of training. Historically, blisters are the number one medical issue at Recruit Training. NWU boots and athletic sneakers are the primary footwear.

● Work to eliminate any caffeinated beverages from your diet. Drink water and get used to drinking water. Report for training fully hydrated.

● A PT test will be administered shortly after in-processing has been completed. Fitness assessments are taken at Recruit Training. Begin working out today if you have not already done so. Running distances and sprints, along with push-ups, sit ups, and flutter kicks are recommended. Please see the Physical Requirements at the end of this document.

● Follow the instructions in this letter and pack a complete sea bag EXACTLY to specifications. You don’t want to be “that cadet” who didn’t have all the necessary items. Please See the Uniform Standards pdf at the end of this packet. Uniform items (other than NWUs) can be procured from Supply if available. Otherwise items can be purchased at the Pearl Harbor Uniform Store or at http://www.seacadetshipsstore.com/ . SeaBag list for RT is at the end of this document.

● Review/Complete Assignments 1,5,6,9, & 10 in your BMR Coursework (Sea Cadets only, not required for League Cadets) Click here to open it in your browser or go to http://homeport.seacadets.org/display/CadetAdvance/Basic+Military+RequirementsRecord your

answers in the Answer Sheet in this packet. Keep your answer sheets in preparation to hand them in in order to advance to an E2 once your entire BMR coursework is completed. Always make a copy of your answer sheets and keep for your records.

● Learn the 11 General Orders - included in this packet● Learn the Sailor’s Creed - included in this packet● Learn the Sea Cadet Oath - included in this packet

SeaBag

Review the seabag list. All items must be marked with the cadet’s last name and first initial (all underwear and socks look the same after a while). We will conduct a seabag inspection immediately upon arrival. If required items are not in the seabag, escort officers/parents will be required to obtain missing items immediately, so please make sure everything is there.

Haicuts - Haircuts must be performed prior to coming to RT. The haircut must remain satisfactory for 2 weeks, so cutting it shorter than the regulation may be necessary. Males must have hair neatly trimmed and no longer than 2 inches. Sideburns must not extend further than half-way from the top of the ear. Females must have hair neatly pulled away from their face and secured in a bun. Bangs must not go below the eyebrow line. Care should be taken to not have strays protruding from the scalp or the bun. This can be accomplished through use of bobby pins and a hairnet if desired. A braided bun is authorized.

WE DO NOT, AND CANNOT PROVIDE MISSING UNIFORM ITEMS AT RECRUIT TRAINING.

• Properly fitting, good quality footgear (i.e. Athletic walking or running shoes only) with good arch support will be worn during PT. • No Speedo or two-piece swimming suits will be allowed. PLAIN navy blue or plain black only, please. • For Female recruits: There will be NO makeup allowed of any type –do not bring it or it will be confiscated. • No jewelry should be brought – except that one pair of 3/16 inch silver balls (Navy authorized) may be brought by female recruits with pierced ears. Recruits may also wear one religious medal under their uniform. • The PT gear referred to on the seabag list is what you will sleep in.

The following items are EXPRESSLY PROHIBITED and will be confiscated upon arrival. Contraband includes: cosmetics / nail polish, weapons, controlled substances, matches/lighters, pornographic materials, tobacco products, electronics (includes cell phones), liquid shoe polish, alcoholic beverages, perfumes, candy, gum, food etc., duct tape, books/magazines(except 1 religious), jewelry (except 1 religious medal).

During Recruit Training

Personal Monies

As specified in the SeaBag list, Cadets should bring $40 for spending money at the NEX. This money will be locked securely until it is needed. The only exception to the $40 would be for cadets who are traveling to/from the training by commercial air, who should bring funds sufficient to cover meals/drinks etc while waiting at the airport.

Physical SecurityAll personnel should feel safe in their training environment. There will be no hazing, acts of sexual harassment, or harassment that singles out any individual of any kind by any cadet or staff member. Any individual violating this rule will be counseled and disciplined. If deemed appropriate by the Commanding Officer, violators will be sent home from training. All personnel are required to report via the chain of command any incidents that they feel jeopardize their personal safety, or the personal safety of others.

If the Commanding Officer determines that it is necessary for a cadet to be sent home prior to the end of training, parents will be notified to arrange transportation for an immediate return trip. Parents are responsible for all travel expenses. Parents and Unit CO are responsible for ensuring that all contact information on the Request for Training Authority Form (NSCTNG001) are current. If parents and/emergency contacts are travelling during the time of the training, contact telephone numbers are required.

Travel GuidelinesAlthough transportation for cadets arriving via commercial air is the responsibility of the parent/home unit, cadets arriving by commercial air MUST submit the Transportation Form at least one week prior to the beginning of training. This should be emailed to [email protected] • Cadets who are flying into the training do not require an adult accompanying them. Flights should be scheduled to and from Honolulu International Airport. The airport code is HNL. • Cadets flying commercial air will be transported to and from the airport by a Staff Officer or parent volunteer. • Cadets are prohibited from driving vehicles to Recruit Training. Staff Cadets may request the option of driving their own vehicle but they are not to do so without the express permission of the Commanding Officer. • Cadets flying home via commercial air will travel home in civilian clothes. • Cadets should carry their Sea Cadet ID card with them during travel and at all times while on base, unless otherwise directed by competent authority. • Cadets are also reminded to bring their dress whites in garment bags to prevent soiling and wrinkling. You are strongly advised to have your uniform cleaned and pressed prior to arrival, and to take pains to ensure it does not get wrinkled en route. • Cadets should arrive in accordance with reporting times listed above. Time flights and drives accordingly. It is 20 minute drive from HNL Airport to the training site at JBPH-H. • Cadets should not book flights home prior to 1530 (3:30pm) on Saturday, 20JUL13. They should travel to the airport after graduation; cadets cannot wait at the base until closer to departure time. • Early departures will not be authorized. Cadets must complete the entire 14 day training period.

The physical address for the training site is the Battleship Missouri, Ford Island, HI. Please enter the address in programs such as MapQuest or Google maps. If you require Base Access please contact our base access officer Arlene Campbell at [email protected]

GraduationGraduation commences promptly on Saturday, 20JUL13, at 1200. Further information will be provided as to location. • Cadets should wear ribbons earned prior to Recruit Training at graduation; ribbons/medals earned and documented in the service jacket ARE authorized for wear at graduation. • You will need to show current driver’s license/military id if driving. Please be sure to contact Arlene Campbell for Base Access [email protected] • All persons on base are subject to search. Your vehicle and all bags and packages are subject to search. • Photography on graduation day is permitted. Parents are encouraged to bring cameras and video cameras. • You should arrive between 1130 and 1145 for Graduation. You will not be able to talk with your cadet until after graduation. • Graduation will conclude at approximately 1230. You will be able to “collect” your cadet (and his or her belongings) at that time.

SPECIAL NOTICE

RECRUIT TRAINING IS TAKEN SERIOUSLY. There is a lot of hard work. There is a lot expected of those attending, including all cadets, staff cadets, and officers. Everyone is closely watched and supervised. Please keep in mind, you will be terminated from training for any ethical or moral infractions, and the cadet, staff cadet, parents, or officer will be responsible for the return fare.SAFETY IS OF THE UTMOST CONCERN. We will stop any portion of the training at any time if we see anything out of place or dangerous to those involved. Once the problem has been corrected, training will resume from where we left off.OUR AIM IS MAKE THIS TRAINING EVOLUTION MEMORABLE. This is your cadet's introduction into the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. When they return home to you, you will see a maturity and confidence that wasn't there before.

In closing, we want you to feel secure regarding your cadet’s safety and well being during the Recruit Training experience. Our intent is to provide a rich learning experience within a military context. Days will be jam-packed with classes and activities that will enrich your cadet’s understanding of duty and responsibility within the “Sea Service” tradition. The adult officers, instructors, and staff cadets will treat each cadet as an individual of worth and any form of harassment to cadets or by cadets or others will not be allowed.

the officers appointed over me,and so conduct myself as to be a credit

the Naval Sea Cadet Corps,to myself,my unit,

the Navy andmy country.”

FITNESS STANDARDS You will need to pass a NSCC Physical Readiness Test (PRT). Prepare yourself by having a good fitness routine. Below is a chart of the minimum physical fitness standards. Click here for a description of each exercise.

5. DESCRIPTION OF EXERCISES (SEE ADVANCEMENT AND TRAINING MANUAL APPENDIX (3)FOR ADDITONAL GUIDANCE)

a. SIT-UP: Objective: To measure abdominal strength/endurance by maximum number of sit-ups performed in one minute. Testing: Have Cadet lie on cushioned, clean surface with knees flexed and feet about 12 inches from buttocks. Partner holds feet. Arms are crossed with hands placed on opposite shoulders and elbows held close to chest. Keeping this arm position, Cadet raises the trunk curling up to touch elbows to thighs and then lowers the back to the floor so that the scapulas (shoulder blades) touch the floor, for one sit-up. To start, a timer calls out the signal "Ready? Go!" and begins timing Cadet for one minute. The Cadet stops on the word "stop." Rules: "Bouncing" off the floor is not permitted. The sit-up should be counted only if performed correctly.

5b. V-SIT: Objective: To measure flexibility of lower back and hamstrings by reaching forward in the V position. Testing: A straight line two feet long is marked on the floor as the baseline. A measuring line is drawn perpendicular to the midpoint of the baseline extending two feet on each side and marked off in half-inches. The point where the baseline and measuring line intersect is the "0" point. Cadet removes shoes and sits on floor with measuring line between legs and soles of feet placed immediately behind baseline, heels 8-12 inches apart. Cadet clasps thumbs so that hands are together, palms down and places them on measuring line. With the legs held flat by a partner, Cadet slowly reaches forward as far as possible, keeping fingers on baseline and feet flexed. After three practice tries, the student holds the fourth reach for three seconds while that distance is recorded. Rules: Legs must remain straight with soles of feet held perpendicular to the floor (feet flexed). Students should be encouraged to reach slowly rather than "bounce" while stretching. Scores, recorded to the nearest half inch, are read as plus scores for reaches beyond baseline, minus scores for reaches behind baseline.

5c. SHUTTLE RUN: Objective: To perform shuttle run as fast as possible. Testing: Mark two parallel lines 30 feet apart and place two blocks of wood or similar object behind one of the lines. Cadets start behind opposite line. On the signal "Ready? Go!" the Cadet runs to the blocks, picks one up, runs back to the starting line, places block behind the line, runs back and picks up the second block and runs back across starting line. Rules: Blocks should not be thrown across the lines. Scores are recorded to the nearest tenth of a second.

5d. ONE-MILE RUN: Objective: To measure heart/lung endurance by fastest time to cover a one-mile distance. Testing: On a safe one-mile distance, Cadets begin running on the count "Ready? Go!" Walking may be interspersed with running. However, the Cadets should be encouraged to cover the distance in as short a time as possible. Rules: Before administering this test, Cadets' health status should be reviewed. Also, Cadets should be given ample instruction on how to pace themselves and should be allowed to practice running this distance against time. Sufficient time should be allowed for warming up and cooling down before and after the test. Times are recorded in minutes and seconds.

5e. PUSH-UP: Objective: To measure upper body strength/endurance by maximum number of push-ups completed. Testing: The Cadet lies face down on the mat in push-up position with hands under shoulders, fingers straight, and legs straight, parallel, and slightly apart, with the toes supporting the feet. The Cadet straightens the arms, keeping the back and knees straight, then lowers the body until there is a 90-degree angle at the elbows, with the upper arms parallel to the floor. A partner holds her/his hand at the point of the 90-degree angle so that the Cadet being tested goes down only until her/his shoulder touches the partner’s hand, then back up. The push-ups are done until the Cadet can do no more time expires or has reached the target number. Rules: Record only those push-ups done with proper form.
