We welcome over 480 new students to KES this year! This includes our new VPK unit “The Cove”. We are excited to have (20) young Dolphins at school with us. The summer passed way too quickly and was busy with numerous staff trainings, conferences and workshops. This school year has many exciting changes and initiatives. We want to keep you informed so you can assist your child at home to reach their fullest potential. Please plan on attending Curriculum Night on either Sep- tember 3 rd , 4 th and/or 5 th . See newsletter for specific grade-level nights. Parent Pickup (Car Riders) and Drop-off…Our parents are doing great! Ketterlinus is an unique school – located in the downtown St. Augustine in the midst of the hustle and bustle of major tourist attractions and businesses. It is one of the many things that we love about our school. Our students are very fortunate to have access to many of these places. How often can a class just walk over to Project Swing? Or a teacher can walk down the street to get her students an ice cream treat from the Oldest Drug Store? Please be stewards of our com- munity by demonstrating good character by following our guidelines below dur- ing drop-off and pickup procedures. In the morning… *Drop off begins at 8am. If you require morning care, please inquire with the Recreation Department at 209-0377. Please do not leave your child unattended before a school staff member is present at parent drop off. Students who are repeatedly dropped off early will be enrolled in the morning care program. Par- ents will be responsible for the registration fee and daily morning care fee. *Make sure your child is sitting on the passenger side prepared to exit with their lunchbox and/or backpack. The line backs up when a student is not pre- pared. From time to time, it happens to all of us, just pull forward to a parking space to allow the car line to move giving you and your child more time to pre- pare. *DO NOT allow your child to exit from the driver side. This is unsafe and slows the line down. *Pull forward. The first car should pull all the way to the white/blue sign. This allows more cars to drop off in the “landing area”. In the afternoons… *School ends at 2:50pm. Do not come earlier unless it is absolutely necessary. Those that repeatedly check out early will need to meet with administration. The end of the day is a very important part of the day for students. Students are getting assignments and reviewing the day’s learning goals and activities. *Please enter “the line” by driving on Castillo Drive between the Visitor’s Cen- ter and Project Swing – DO NOT stop traffic behind the school district build- ing by trying to turn left through the wooden gates. This has caused the trolley trains to back up. In addition, this is not fair to the parents who have also been waiting patiently. *Car tags are displayed. Not having a tag it slows the process down. Please make sure you child’s grade is on the tag as well. This helps us in calling the right student. We have several students with the same first name, but can narrow it down with a grade level. *Pull forward! This allows more cars to pick up simultaneously. *Do not use a cell phone. *Stay in the car, Do not walk up and try to pick up your child. This causes the adults to stop listening to walkie talkies and we miss calling names. We dismiss non-car riders at 3:05-3:10 to the front patio area. Please wait for them there. *I strongly encourage parents to consider having their child ride the school bus. Our drivers are fantastic! And this saves you time and gas. Also, our plans are to extend the covered area. With our changes, buses are getting out of the bus loop earlier. We are moving 480+ students out of the school in a safe and uniform manner. We thank you for your support. I also encourage you to attend our PTO meeting and/or SAC meetings. I will go over the reasons for the changes more in depth in the future or feel free to call me at 547-8543. Have a fabulous weekend! Kathy Tucker Principal We are beginning an initiative to raise money for non-fiction books for the media center, as well as for classroom libraries. Look for more information! We are looking for community partners to help make this a reality. Please let me know if you are interested. Look for more information to come! Clinic News Just a reminder that all medications brought to the clinic for your child to have must be accompanied with a doctor’s or- der on the school district’s Medication Authorization form. This form and the medication policy can be found on our website. Also, if your child has a cast, crutches or recently had sur- gery or medical issue, please inform me so that I can devel- op a plan of care at school, if needed.
