Tweet From Pope Francis Our response to the challenges posed by contemporary migration can be summed up in four verbs: welcome, protect, promote and integrate. If we put them into practice, we will help build the city of God and man. 12/18

THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY Happy New Year! Welcome to 2020. Last weekend, we cele-brated the Feast of Holy Family. This weekend, we focus our attention on one member of that Holy Family, Jesus. Last week-end, He was presented to us as the Son of Mary and today He is shown as the Son of God. According to Matthew 2:1, "Jesuswas born at Bethlehem in Judaea, in the days of King Herod. And thereupon certain wise men came out of the East to Jeru-salem." They saw the star, and by a certain grace from God, they knew that it announced the birth of the Messiah whom the people of Israel were expecting. The job of these men was to

study the star. Interestingly, God manifested His will through the ordinary job of these men. Reflecting on this, St. John Chrysostom said; "God called them by what was most familiar to them and showed them a great, marvelous star so that it would attract their attention by its very greatness and beauty." God speaks to us in our everyday life. Many people saw the star, only these Wise Men of the East discovered its deep meaning. Many of us live our daily lives, only a few people discover the will of God in them. Only a few dis-cover the deeper meaning of life. When these wise men finally embraced the invitation of the star, they left behind their families, their com-fort, and their goods. Maybe it was not easy for them to explain the reason for their journey. For their con-temporaries, the decision to follow the star was lunacy. The journey must have been very long and difficult but they persevered. We, too, have seen the star in the depth of our hearts, inviting us to follow. The timing of this celebration couldn't be better than this weekend as we begin a new year. This is our first Sunday in 2020. We need a star that will guide us through 2020. We need guidance because this is going to be a busy year. Firstly, we need to pray for Vocations to the Priesthood, Deaconate, and Religious Life. Secondly, we will organize a Day of Recollection for all our volunteers, and a three day Mission for the whole parish. Thirdly, we want bathrooms in Msgr. Crean Hall, and a safe entrance to our elementary school. We will have a seri-ous and honest talk about these two projects this year. These are just a few additions to our busy Parish Cal-endar. This is going to be a busy year. We ask God to give us the kind of faith He gave to these wise men. We also pray that God will lead us with His star. With the Church, we pray; "O God Who enlightened the Wise Men from the East and set them on the way to adore Your Son, enlighten our faith...lead us with your star through 2020."Amen. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Fr. Michael Ume

Saint André Bessette Saint of the Day for January 6

(August 9, 1845 – January 6, 1937) Brother André expressed a saint’s faith by a lifelong devotion to Saint Joseph. Sickness and weakness dogged André from birth. He was the eighth of 12 chil-dren born to a French Canadian couple near Montreal. He held many jobs with little success. He was a factory worker in the United States during the boom times of the Civil War. At 25, André applied for entrance into the Congregation of Holy Cross. After a year’s novitiate, he was not admit-ted because of his weak health. But with an extension and the urging of Bishop Bourget, he was finally re-ceived. He was given the humble job of doorkeeper at Notre Dame College in Montreal, with additional duties as sacristan, laundry worker and messenger. “When I joined this community, the superiors showed me the door, and I remained 40 years,” he said. In his little room near the door, he spent much of the night on his knees. On his windowsill, facing Mount Roy-al, was a small statue of Saint Joseph, to whom he had been devoted since childhood. When asked about it he said, “Some day, Saint Joseph is going to be honored in a very special way on Mount Royal!” When he heard someone was ill, he visited to bring cheer and to pray with the sick person. He would rub the sick person lightly with oil taken from a lamp burning in the college chapel. Word of healing powers began to spread. When an epidemic broke out at a nearby college, André volunteered to nurse. Not one person died. The trickle of sick people to his door became a flood. His superiors were uneasy; diocesan authorities were suspicious; doc-tors called him a quack. “I do not cure,” he said again and again. “Saint Joseph cures.” In the end he needed four secretaries to handle the 80,000 letters he received each year. For many years the Holy Cross authorities had tried to buy land on Mount Royal. Brother André and others climbed the steep hill and planted medals of Saint Jo-seph. Suddenly, the owners yielded. André collected $200 to build a small chapel and began receiving visitors there—smiling through long hours of listening, applying Saint Joseph’s oil. Some were cured, some not. The pile of crutches, canes and braces grew. The sickly boy who could not hold a job died at 92. He was beatified in 1982 and canonized in 2010. At his canonization in October 2010, Pope Benedict XVI said that Saint Andre “lived the beatitude of the pure of heart.” Reflection Rubbing ailing limbs with oil or a medal? Planting a med-al to buy land? Isn’t this superstition? Aren’t we long past that? Superstitious people rely only on the “magic” of a word or action. Brother André’s oil and medals were au-thentic sacramentals of a simple, total faith in the Father who lets his saints help him bless his children. ~franciscanmedia.org

The Angelus: Preventing Homelessness Look in "The Angelus" this week for an arti-cle about a woman who sought asylum and

won it; and the people who came to her assistance to prevent her from becoming homeless and then supported her for a year. That story is about us- St. Vincent de Paul, and your As-sumption-BVM Conference of Charity. Not only us here, but St. Andrew, St. Elizabeth, St. Philip, and Sacred Heart, along with the Los Angeles Council of SSVdP. Follow the narrative and you will see a particular type of case we refer to as "Systemic Change,” whereby we stay with a friend-in-need for a prolonged period of time ren-dering advice, counseling, spiritual direction and resource support. The goal is to create a positive, long-term be-havioral and situational impact on the friend-in-need's life. We are still in support of this woman and her three chil-dren. Not much can be said about her because of confi-dentiality and the fact she is keeping a low profile. She fled her country after tragic circumstances, both as wit-ness and victim as her family members were killed by the government. Escaping with their lives, she and her chil-dren came here to establish roots in "the land of the free, and the home of the brave." She has been praying for a new beginning and now she has it, in part due to the ef-forts of St. Vincent de Paul. Here is but another example of your support and the in-evitable good it brings to our community. With this New Year's celebration, the United States of America has never looked so promising as it does right now to this mother and her three children. Please know that your charity has helped make it so. God bless Assumption Parish, and God bless the As-sumption-BVM Conference of Charity! Eternally, and without compromise… Robert Wyatt President If you would like to know more about joining our Confer-ence, please ask anytime you see us around the parish or call the hotline and someone can talk to you on the phone or meet with you. Or if you know someone who needs assistance, please call our hotline: (626) 657-0836. If you would like to make a monetary donation to be used in helping those in need, please use the Assumption-SSVdP tan envelope provided in the pew. Remember, 100% of your donation serves the poor!

DID YOU KNOW? What is child sex trafficking? Child sex trafficking occurs when a minor is in-volved in a commercial sex act where sex is trad-ed for money, food, shelter, drugs or anything else of value. Perpetrators of sex trafficking often target children believing their age makes them easier to manipulate and control. This crime is occurring in all types of communi-ties throughout the U.S. and traffickers are making an alarming profit while victims endure abuse and violence. One of the most important things you can do to protect your child is to create an environment in which he or she feels comfortable talking with you as a trusted adult. For more information please visit, http://www.missingkids.com/theissues/trafficking.
