SITE HISTORY
OPPORTUNITIES AND CONSTRAINTS
GOALSTo develop a physically, socially, ecologi-cally and economically healthier commu-nity:1. Create a community that builds social capital2. Improve community resources (parks, clin-ics, childcare, community gardens)3. Improve walkability4. Encourage biking and public transit5. Create a mixed-use community6. Increase housing -- including low-income housing7. Integrate and improve the Waterfront8. Create passive and active recreational activities9. Develop focal areas with public gathering spots10. Create a sense of Destination
ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS
The Central Waterfront neighborhood is comprised of approximately 500 acres along San Franciscos eastern shoreline between Potrero Hill and the Bay. The area is bounded by Mariposa Street to the north, Interstate 280 to the west, Islais Creek to the south, and the San Francisco Bay to the east.
Initially, the Central Waterfront was a rocky peninsula that extended from Potrero Hill between 20th and 22nd Streets. Leveling and lling removed all traces of the original topography except for a small portion of Irish Hill.
The section of the Central Waterfront from 25th Street south to Islais Creek, the area of our re-design, was de-veloped most recently. Islais Creek originally drained from Twin Peaks and Glen Park to Alemany Gap. The creek currently runs through an aqueduct that ends below Interstate 280.
This area has served as a site for gunpowder manufac-turering and shipbuilding and as a site for the Pacic Rolling Mills, the San Francisco Gas Light Company, the California Poppy Soap Company, California Sugar Re-nery, the American Barrel Company and the Union Iron Works (UIW) shipyard.

This design was inspired by Robert Putnams Book, Bowling Alone, which chronicled the decline in social capital in the United States and described the link beween a loss of social capital and poor health outcomes. This scheme creates the physical structures needed to both strengthen the social fabric of a community and provide opportunities for improving physical health.
GOALS
To develp a physically, socially, ecologically and economically healthier community:1. Develop a physical framework for building social capital2. Improve community resources3. Improve walkability4. Encourage biking and public transit5. Create a mixed-use community6. Increase housing -- including low-income7. Integrate and improve the waterfront8. Create passive and active reacreational opportunities9.

Develop focal areas with public gathering spots10. Create a sense of Destination
