THE POWER OF THANK YOU
In the spirit of Thanksgiving this week I'd love to share with you the benefits and power of two
simple words. THANK YOU.
They are two words that have the power to transform our health, happiness, athletic performance
and success. Research shows that grateful people are happier and more likely to maintain good
friendships. A state of gratitude, according to research by the Institute of HeartMath, also
improves the heart's rhythmic functioning, which helps us to reduce stress, think more clearly
under pressure and heal physically. It's actually physiologically impossible to be stressed and
thankful at the same time. When you are grateful you flood your body and brain with emotions
and endorphins that uplift and energize you rather than the stress hormones that drain you.
Gratitude and appreciation are also essential for a healthy work environment. In fact, the number
one reason why people leave their jobs is because they don't feel appreciated. A simple thank
you and a show of appreciation can make all the difference.
Gratitude is like muscle. The more we do with it the stronger it gets. In this spirit here are 5 ways
to practice Thanksgiving every day of the year.
1) Take a Daily Thank You Walk - I started this practice 15 years ago and it changed my life.
Take a simple 10-30 minute walk each day and say out loud what you are thankful for. This will
set you up for a positive day. I wrote more about this in The Positive Dog .
2) Meal Time Thank You's - On Thanksgiving, or just at dinner go around the table and have
each person, including the kids, say what they are thankful for.
NCAEOP - President’s Weekly Message
www.ncaeop.net
Weekly Message Number 25
3) Gratitude Visit - Martin Seligman, Ph.D., the father of positive psychology, suggests that we
write a letter expressing our gratitude to someone. Then we visit this person and read them the
letter. His research shows that people who do this are measurably happier and less depressed a
month later.
4) Say Thank You at Work - When Doug Conant was the CEO of Campbell Soup he wrote
approximately 30,000 thank you notes to his employees and energized the company in the
process. Energize and engage your co-workers and team by letting them know you are grateful
for them and their work. Organizations spend billions of dollars collectively on recognit ion
programs but the best and cheapest recognition program of all consists of a sincere THANK
YOU. And of course don't forget to say thank you to your clients and customers too.
5) Say Thank you and Goodnight - At bedtime reflect on your day, identify and share all that
you are thankful for. If you have children you can read Thank You and Goodnight with them and
add to it.
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

NCAEOP District 5 – Annual Meeting
District 5 held its Annual Fall Meeting on November 6, 2020 at Central Davie Academy in
Mocksville, NC. There were 18 members present, representing six counties. This was a day filled
with enjoyment, fellowship and learning in spite of the extra precautions taken to ensure the
health and safety of attendees amidst a pandemic. During the meeting, four workshops were held
offering a total of 5 hours of PSP credit.
District 5 scholarship winner, Sally Boger attended along with her parents and was presented
with a framed certificate. She will be receiving $500.00 to apply to her college tuition.
Administrator Beth Edwards was also a special guest at the luncheon where she was recognized
as the triple winner of the 2019-2020 Davie County AEOP, District 5 and NCAEOP

There was a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and each attendee received a goodie bag and treats! One

attended. All topics were of interest to me and the presenters did an outstanding job. The
lunch was delicious and all the goodies were a delight. Thanks for hosting this exceptional

District 6 News
Members of NCAEOP District 6 have been faithful during this continued pandemic we are faced
with. We have carried on with several zoom meetings in which we were blessed with excellent
speakers.
When the District 6 board met we began discussing the annual fall meeting… How do we? How
do we? How do we? Well we definitely do not have all the answers but we did unanimously
decide that we wanted our year to be focused on LOVE.
So we have adopted the theme of “Love Your Body, Staying Healthy Inside and Out”. We
plan on focusing our year with educational opportunities all about being healthy inside and
out. We believe that a healthy mentality, body and attitude carries on into the workplace and
certainly can benefit our daily lives.
Being that we are not back to a normal schedule we had a little “mini” business session and a
one-hour PSP workshop on October 1st through zoom to kick off what is usually our normal fall
meeting time. Our workshop was on a healthy diet. Tammy Burke and Tina Lunsford presented
an awesome program filled with some great information on to eat healthier, they even kicked in
some recipes!
We plan to continue our fall meeting into February, the month of “Love”. Yes we know that
February technically is not in the fall. But we so want to meet in person and have the
opportunity to have multiple workshops so this is our plan right now. Our LOVE theme will
definitely be carried into February. Hopefully the Corona Virus will cooperate and we will be
able to meet in person. When our board met our LOVE theme was kind of what drove our
meeting plans. We need to love one another; we need to love our bodies and we need to learn
how to physically and mentally take care of our bodies. It is a proven fact those who are happy
do better in the workplace. Goodness knows we all need more LOVE in our lives right now.
So, plan to join us on this crazy journey of LOVE … love me, love you, love your co-worker,
love your neighbor, love yourself enough to take care of YOU! … and last but not last LOVE
everyone!

Hello, NAEOP members,
Time is going by so fast I feel like I missed October! Oh, I think I did. Here is the October/November
update.
The NAEOP ballot for election of officers and Bylaws changes was sent out to members on November 3 and will be available until midnight CST on Tuesday, November 17. Don’t
miss out on your chance to vote!
The NAEOP webinar series is underway, but it’s not too late to join. All sessions are recorded,
so you won’t miss a thing. Taking part in the webinar series is a great way to earn PSP hours and gain great professional development, all at your convenience!
Be sure to watch for the Tuesday’s Tips coming your way on Tuesdays!! In order to keep the
Tips coming, all members are invited to record a Tip. The topic is of your choosing. The easiest way to record is on your phone and send the recording to Paula Rosenberger
The 2020-2021 Conference Planning Committee, co-chaired by Bonnie Miller and Katherine Reichley, is in the process of lining up quality professional development sessions. Be sure to
Save-the-Date for July 12-16, 2021, in Pittsburgh, PA.
A great way to get involved with NAEOP is to join one of the committees. Most of the
committee work is done electronically. Some committees also have responsibilities at the
annual conference. Being a committee member is a great way to network with other professionals across the country, learn more about NAEOP, and earn PSP points.
A request for submission of Advisory Council agenda items will be coming soon. Submitting
an agenda item provides your association the opportunity to suggest changes to NAEOP
processes and practices to shape the future of NAEOP. Of course, your association must be affiliated with NAEOP in order to submit agenda items and to have a delegate at the
Advisory Council session during the annual conference.
The process of transitioning to a new database is underway. There may be some interruptions
to some functions, and you will be notified.
Leadership Corner – Building a positive culture Your NAEOP Board of Directors is reading the book, “The Power of Positive Leadership,” by Jon
Gordon. Jon always has a lot of thoughtful, simple advice for leaders and followers.
Now that fall conferences are completed and we look forward to holidays and perhaps a more relaxed time frame, I encourage you to take a look at NAEOP. How do we create and maintain a positive
culture within our association?
A positive culture is cultivated through one conversation, one engagement, one connection at a time. It
builds relationships, teamwork, and empowers people to learn and grow and to do their best work,
according to Gordon.
When driving and building a culture, ask yourself these questions:
What do we stand for?
What do we want to be known for?
As we assess what we want our culture to be, how does it compare to where we are?
Does everyone in the association know what we stand for and are they living it? If they aren't, what
can you do to bring the mission to life?
This year, as you know, my theme is NAEOP's vision: "The vision of the National Association of Educational Office Professionals (NAEOP) is to be the leading resource for educational professionals."
What are we doing to live that vision and have it reflected at our local and state affiliates as well?
I would love to hear your thoughts!
Wishing you and your families a very blessed Thanksgiving. Stay safe and be well!
Kind regards,
Mary

Hebrews 10:23-24
New International Version
23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is
faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and
good deeds,
39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those
who have faith and are saved.
