New ISU Students & New Residents
Welcome EVERYONE!
Preparation of the Altar After the prayers of the faithful we begin the offertory and the preparation of the altar. Going back to our Jewish roots, there was much that would go into preparing the altar for sacrifice. Similarly, in the sacrifice of the mass, there is much that goes into preparing the altar. One little-known thing is that we place a white cloth called a corporal (from the root word for “body”) down on the spot where the bread and wine will be consecrated. The purpose is so that this cloth can catch and crumbs or drops of the Body or Precious blood. If the Eucharist is what we say it is, then it is worth taking special care of this precious gift. Then the gifts are placed on the corporal on the altar and the priest offers them up. As mentioned in last week’s article, it is not merely the priest that offers the gifts but we all offer gifts to God. What we bring to the altar can be transformed by God. We bring ordinary bread and wine which God transforms into Christ’s extraordinary Body and Blood. But we as people also bring our ordinary selves in our gifts and weaknesses to the altar trusting that God can also transform us into something extraordinary. During the preparation of the altar it is easy to get distracted by all the action going on. One of my seminary spiritual directors used to encourage us not to pay so much attention to what is going on in preparing the altar at the Church. Rather, he said that time is a great time for us to make a prayer to prepare our own hearts be the altars of sacrifice of love in our families, our community and the whole world.
Memorial Union Parking STA pays for Mass overflow parking in the Memorial Union Parking Ramp. We pay $2.75 per vehicle for 90 minutes of parking, plus a 5% handling fee. There are 2 requests parish leadership makes of all who park in the Memorial Union Parking Ramp:
1. Please cross Lincoln Way at the Ash Ave. light and crosswalk. Do not cut across Lincoln Way and the median to take a “short cut.” Everyone’s safety is important. If parishioners are unable or unwilling to honor this request, STA paying for parking at the MU may be terminated.
2. A core principle in Catholic thought is the "common good."
This asks what is best for everyone involved instead of what is easiest for me. We encourage people who can easily park at the MU, especially on Sunday mornings, to consider parking there to open spaces in our parking structure for those who may not be able to cross Lincoln Way as easily, or who may need to stay longer than the 90 minutes. Lets make this work for everyone.
—PROCEDURE— ¨ Take a parking stub as you enter the MU Ramp –
bring this stub with you to the church. ¨ Fully insert your parking stub in the validation machine
by the gathering space doors – you should hear a soft click — remove the stub —this pays for 90 minutes of parking and lets ISU know to charge STA.
(your time begins when you enter the MU Ramp) ¨ at the MU Parking ramp exit, insert your validated stub
into the reader to raise the exit gate ¨ If you have been in the MU Ramp for more than 90
minutes you will have to pay the overage with a credit card (no AMEX) at the exit gate OR cash at a pay station inside the Memorial Union in order to exit.

Young Adults Nature is calling you this Labor Day weekend! Join us for the 26th annual Nature's Call Campout in Missouri! You and other young adult Catholics from across the Midwest will enjoy a relaxing getaway to Lake Pomme de Terre, where you can pitch a tent or simply hang a hammock on the several acres of land on the lake! You will meet and grow in friendship with 100+ young faithful while enjoying swimming, live music, dancing, hiking, a cooking competition, sports, and more! Holy Mass and Confessions will be available during the weekend. Food and beverages will not be provided. To learn more and purchase tickets ($25 online or $30 at the door), please visit naturescall.camp. We look forward to seeing you!
Will you be person #6? On average, young people need 6 different people in their lives to accompany them on their faith journey in order for it to matter. Will you be one of these 6 people for STA’s young people? If willing, contact Joe or Jen Weyers in the parish office to discuss ways to get involved in our ministries for young people.
Labor Day is next week In the Catholic tradition, work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation. This Labor Day, reflect on the dignity of work and rights of workers by visiting www.usccb.org/jphd to read the annual Labor Day statement from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. This Labor Day, take action to address inequality and injustice in our workplaces. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) (www.usccb.org/cchd) supports organizations that empower workers and address the root causes of poverty. Find a local CCHD-funded group and learn how you can get involved. (Amos Institute of Public Life is probably the closest CCHD-funded entity from Ames.)
Children’s Faith Formation begins September 18
If you have yet to register your child(ren) for any of our Faith Formation ministries, please do so ASAP as we are nearing our start date! Register online at www.staparish.net and look for the golden box under the image.

Help with Landscape & Gardens Got some time to help with landscape and plants? Want to lend a hand at STA where help is very much needed? A great way to enjoy the outdoors and pause to reflect and pray while getting your hands “dirty”! Contact Jackie, 292-3307, if you can help once or on a regular basis.
Stephen Ministry “Where two or more are gathered in my name, I am among them.” In Matthew 18, Jesus promises to be with us. That’s one of the great miracles of Stephen Ministry. When a Stephen Minister meets one-on-one with his or her care receiver, Jesus is present, also. Through the Stephen Minister, God is able to provide His transforming love and the peace, healing and comfort that is needed. Words from a care receiver. “I was alone and had no one to turn to. Then I heard about Stephen Ministry. My Stephen Minister became someone I could really count on." For further information and to contact help, call Glenn Sibbel (515-451-3353) or Cindy Hauber (515-291-0250).
Martha’s House of Hope Martha's House of Hope is seeking female individuals to volunteer overnight at the house. This opportunity would be to ensure someone is available at the house. The individuals who volunteer would be permitted to sleep while at the house and the hours are 9pm to 7am daily. Contact 515-337-0618 or [email protected] for additional information.

To help with the monitoring of our parking areas:
Þ parking at STA is only for those inside the building or those who have a weekday permit.
Þ if you are in the building and have a car parked between 8am and 5pm (Mon – Fri) sign-in at the parish office.
Þ those attending Noon Mass do not have to sign-in, unless you are here past 12:45pm.
Þ If you come to STA daily or several times a week, please see Bobby LeBlanc so you won’t have the hassle of signing-in every time.
Þ while the sign-in system is for weekdays only, Saturday, Sunday and evening parking at STA is only for those IN the building or with permission.
Facebook, Twitter, and other forms of social media can be powerful tools of communication. They allow people to stay in touch. They provide an avenue for fresh ideas. People can be engaged in conversations and be exposed to issues of the day in ways few could have dreamed of just a few decades ago. But social media can also give the false sense of really knowing someone, when only the surface has been scratched about who a person is in reality. You don't really know someone just because you know a lot about him or her and are linked to a profile online. Unfortunately, people develop emotional attachments to the idea of a person all the time. If they do find themselves fortunate enough to meet the person face-to-face one day, they can often find out they never really knew the person in the first place. There are people who believe they know Jesus so very well. They can readily share their view of what Jesus would do or wouldn't do in a given situation. They own items like crosses and Bibles that seem to provide evidence of this person they know so well. Sometimes, they even strongly admonish others because their view of Jesus is certainly not in line with their own. But in Luke 13, Jesus speaks about those who claim to know him, but they really do not belong to him at all. They make claims based upon what they have seen and heard, but they have never allowed Jesus to truly change them. They are like Facebook followers; seemingly close, but with no real relationship at all. Do you know Jesus? Don't just be a fan. Invite Jesus into your life and let the real relationship begin.
