Week Commencing 1st June 2020Hi Year 5,

I hope you are all OK and still looking after yourselves and those you live with.

This week I’ve been getting frustrated with all the negative news in the world, so I went on a hunt for some more positive stories. Here are a few I found…

• Llamas are being used to deliver shopping in Pembrokeshire!• An aquarium in Tokyo is asking for people to video chat their eels so they ‘don’t forget

humans!• And finally, a vicious beast has been spotted prowling around houses in Woking- look out

for the terrifying monster!

We love hearing from you! If you want to show off some of your work, get feedback, tell us about something you’ve done or just want to say hi, email your teachers at [email protected] Remember to put your class as the subject so your teacher doesn’t miss it!

Today we are going to be looking at some complicated homophones.

Homophones are words that sound the same when spoken, however they are spelt differently and have different meanings. Some of the words today are called ‘near homophones’, this means they sound nearly the same and so people often make mistakes with them.

We are all aware of some homophones such as these…

However there are many more! We’re going to be looking at 10 more advanced homophones today and learn the difference between them.

Page 5: Week Commencing 1 June 2020 Year 5- English …...2020/06/01  · Week Commencing 1st June 2020 Hi Year 5, I hope you are all OK and still looking after yourselves and those you live

Task 1Using a dictionary to help you, find the definition of each of these words. Be careful when looking them up- you need to make sure you get the right version of each word! Write the definitions in your Home Learning book.

Here are two online dictionaries you might wish to use.

The lesson is split into a number of sections, you need to work through these sections in order.

To enhance your understanding of our text, today you are going to pick one chapter (or key part of the story) to summarise.

Instead of writing a summary, you are going to create a comic strip!

You can either use the comic strip template on the next slide, draw your own comic strip out in your Home Learning book, or use the website below to create your comic. There are more instructions on how to use the website comic strip on slide 14.

You have to sign in to in order to save your work so ask your parents before you do this. If you want to keep your work without signing in, you can just do a screen print- remember we learnt about how to do this in our Computing lessons in school.

Here is my attempt at summarising Chapter One. Do you think yours is better? Send a picture of your comic strip to your teacher by emailing [email protected] to put your class in the subject so your teacher won’t miss it!

Friday 5th June 2020- Well-being Friday!

18

I’m joining in with Well-being Friday each week! This week I decided to write a poem based on the piece of art.

I may not have an indestructible shield,And I definitely can’t sling a web.But I help people get better,From Aberdeen to Zagreb.

Maybe I’m not immune to mind controlAnd I don’t have super speed. But I am here every day,Bringing you what you need.

I have no claws of adamantiumOr cloak of levitation. But here I am to healWith intelligence and determination.

I’m not a super hero,I have no magic powers.I’m a super-nurse,Healing hour after hour.

AnswersThe answers for some of the tasks are on the next few slides.

As a lot of our English work is creative, it is not possible to give answers for every task as everyone will have come up with different ideas for their writing/sentences.

If you are unsure on any of the answers, or want to check your answers to creative work, please email the Year 5 team.
