Monday: What is a translation

A translation is moving the points on a graph from one place to another.

When translating a shape, the shape does not change, it is just moved.

Each point of the shape is moved the same number of spaces and in the same directions.

In the example to the right, the original shape (lighter triangle) was moved 4 to the right and 2 up.

Monday: Plotting coordinates on a grid

You can use the following link to follow an online video that explains the process of plotting coordinates on a grid and has an activity for translating points on a grid.

If you cannot access the lesson, the following slides will explain the steps.

Monday: Plotting coordinates on a grid

When reading and writing coordinates on a grid, the numbers are always written with the x axis first, followed by the y axis.

The x axis is the line that runs horizontal across the grid and the y axis is the vertical line as shown in the image.

For example, the coordinates A and B for this grid would be: A(1,2), B(1,7)

Now try writing the coordinates for point D, E and F.

Page 7: Week Beginning 01.6.20 Focus: Translations and …fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...Tuesday: Translating shapes Each of these shapes has been translated and

Monday: translating coordinates

If we look at point B and want to describe how it would move to get to point C, we would find the points and count how many spaces it moves either up, down, left or right.

The wording should look like the following:

Point B is translated 9 units right.

Now try writing the following translations:

E to F

D to F

Task 2

Write the translations that have taken place using the sentence stem: Point ____ is translated ____ units up/down/left/right

Describe how each of the following black shapes has been translated.

Example: The rectangle has been translated 6 units right.

Tuesday: Translating shapes

Each of these shapes has been translated and one vertex ends up on the point marked.

Describe the possible translations

Example: The triangle has been moved 1 unit right, or The triangle has been moved 2 units right and 2 units down.

Thursday: 4 quadrant grids

When plotting points on a 4 quadrant grid, both the x and y axis have positive and negative numbers.

Make sure you are still plotting along the x axis first
