The Book of Secrets

Find out what a bazaar is (page 6).

Imagine you are Boy and visit the bazaar for the first time. Write a setting

description to describe what he might have seen, smelt, felt, wanted to

taste/sample and reached out to touch as he moved around.

Don’t forget to look back at the writing activity checklist to make sure you include the

required features.

Day 3: English

The Characters- Role on the Wall

The Book of Secrets

Think about the character of Boy. On the outside of the outline, write down what you

know or can infer about his appearance when he meets Gordimo and Kaleb. Inside the

outline, write down some ideas about what he might have been thinking and feeling as

he embarked on his journey to Ravalan and came across the two strangers.

Write use your ideas to describe Boy, remembering to use parenthesis to add detail.

Eg. Boy, separated from his mother, father and aunt, had nobody else to turn to to

escape the evil clutches of Master Titus.

Day 4- English

The Secrets

The Book of Secrets

Write a chapter for the book, called ‘The Secrets’.

Inside Boy’s book of secrets, what was it that his father had started but he had to

finish? What was it that Boy’s father had found to make impossible things happen?

Fast forward to the city of Ravalan and to the palace of Queen Gertrude. What is it

that Boy does (using the book of secrets) to amaze the queen and the people and to

win the prize of ten thousand gold crowns?

Choose whether the chapter will be about Boy exploring the different secrets

experimenting with them, to make an amazing spectacle for the queen or performing

some these ‘secrets’ for the queen.

Don’t forget to look back at the writing activity checklist to make sure you include the

required features.

Day 3- Art

North American Artists

We had begun to look at North American artists. We did half portraits of images by the artist

John Singer Sargent and, in last week’s home learning pack, found out about Ansel Adams.

The next artist we’re going to look at is Helen Frankenthaler. Find out 5 key facts about Helen

Frankenthaler, then answer the following questions after choosing one of the images below.

What colours can you see in the picture?

What shapes can you see in the picture?

How does the painting make you feel?

Why do you think the artist painted the picture?

If you could have any of the paintings you have seen in your house, which would you choose

and why?

If you have some large sheet of paper (or wallpaper) at home, try making some of your

own abstract art using your body!

If you don’t have any large paper at home, draw some

overlapping body shapes on smaller paper (use a doll, action

figure or even teddy to draw around) and then colour in the

different sections with blocks of colour (just like this drawing).

Day 4- Science

Last week’s activity recapped on the importance of exercise and the effect that it has on

our body and, in particular, the heart and circulatory system.

This week, you’ll need to raid your cupboards and fridge (without

creating too much mess!). Choose five different items and look at their

packaging in more detail.

The nutrition rating (in red, amber and green) on the food item details

how much fat, sugars and salt a certain amount (a serving) of this item

contains. Look carefully at the serving because this is usually different to

the whole item (so food that has green ratings may not always be as

healthy as you think, if the serving is really small).

The recommended daily intake (or RDI), shows

the percentage of the amount scientists

recommend we should eat each day that one

serving contains. You can also see how many

grams of salt, sugars or fats the item contains.

You should try to choose foods with more green ratings than red. Eating lots of food

with the red rating for sugar (for example) would make for an unbalanced diet and may

affect your health.

The other piece of information on the nutrition rating is the amount of energy or

calories contained in one serving. You may have heard people talking about calories.

The average woman needs 2000 calories (k/cal) per day. The average man needs 2500

calories (k/cal) per day. Children of your age need between 1900 and 2500 calories

each day depending on how active you are.

To find out more about eating a balanced diet, use the Eat Well guide.

Page 19: WEEK 5 - primarysite-prod-sorted.s3.amazonaws.comWEEK 5 Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 English Read chapter one of The Book of Secrets by Philip Caveney The Book of Secrets- The setting

Using the five items you have in front of you, write down what each item contains

using the nutrition rating labels and then answer the questions below.

Food Serving Calories RDI Fat RDI Sugars RDI Salt RDI

Why is it important to read the percentage of the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI)?

Which food surprised you the most? Why?

Which food had the highest % of salt per serving?

Which food had the highest % of sugar per serving?

Which food would you eat less of? Why?

How could you use the information on foods to make healthy choices about what you

eat?

Day 5- PE

Design a workout to do each day for the next week. Include 5 different activities in your workout, starting with the two below. Keep

a track of your results each day and try to beat your previous score. Make a note of your personal bests by the end of the week. Keep

checking your heart rate and think about how it changes as you try the different activities.
