THEME(1) message or lesson to be learned from a work of fiction
(2) subject matter / topic of a work of literature
Part of Speech = noun
Examples =
1. The theme of the book is never lose hope, no matter how hard it seems sometimes.
2. A common theme can be seen in all Criminal Minds episodes; there’s a psychologically disturbed person who suffered as a child.
FICTION-a genre of literature and writing that has imaginative elements; untrue
Part of Speech = noun
Example = The book series Vampire Diaries is fiction because the characters and events in the story are not real or true.
Other forms = fictional (adjective); fictitious (adjective)
NONFICTION-a genre of literature and writing that contains real/true elements
Part of Speech = noun
Example = The book Marley and Me, a dog owner’s memoirs of his destructive dog’s life, can be found in the nonfiction section.
Other forms = nonfictional (adjective)
PLOT- The series of events / storyline in a narrative
Part of Speech = noun
Example = The plot of Harry Potter develops greatly with many twists and surprises with characters and events as the series progresses.
-scope-look at or watch
Word Part = Greek root word
Example = The students used a microscope in science class to study cells, something so small it cannot be seen by the naked eye.

Writing Block-WednesdayPeer Analysis of Tuesday’s Description of a Person
Step 1: READTrade papers with your partner. Read each other’s descriptions of Mr. Owens.
Step 2: COMPARE and CONTRASTThink about how your description is similar to and different from your partner’s. Make a list (on a separate sheet of paper) of those similarities and differences.
Step 3: EVALUATEDo the differences in your descriptions make one less true than the other? What type of writing is this (fiction or nonfiction)? How do you know?
Step 4: DISCUSSDiscuss the differences with your partner.
Writing Block-ThursdayWord Choice Revision of Tuesday’s Description of a Person
Step 1: READReread your description of a person (the second one; not Mr. Owens).
Step 2: FINDFind all of the descriptive words/phrases and circle them.
Step 3: UPGRADEUse a thesaurus (paper or your phone) to upgrade those words.
Step 4: WRITERewrite your description with the new, more descriptive, higher-level words.
