As I indicated earlier in the year, I have been collect- ing student work books. I have generally been happy with the quantity and quality of the work submitted but far too many students have not put enough effort into its presentation. Principal’s Report

I know schools are a very busy place to work, but the last couple of weeks at Wee Waa high School has been hectic. We have been involved in the Wee Waa Show, the athletics carnival, open girls soccer in Armidale, Under 14’s rugby league in Inverell, horse sports in Coonabarabran, Year 12 Visual Arts Day, Science and Engineering Challenge in Narrabri, lawn bowls in Gunnedah, open girls’ touch football in Moree, Mr Catt and Mr O’Shea attending a conference in Melbourne, Mr Druce visiting Tamworth High School TAS department, the Year 9/10 Food Technology class visiting the Christians Schools K, 1 & 2 class, a parent teacher evening and of course, Years 7 & 8 exams. I would like to congratulate the staff for their or-ganisation and participation and the students who have been actively engaged and displayed excel-lent behaviour. The students’ attitude and behav-iour has been a credit to themselves, their families and the community. I would also like to acknowledge the parents who attended the parent teacher evening and actively participated in the education of their child. Just a reminder as the days, especially mornings get colder, that hoodies are not part of our school uniform and are not to be worn at school. The key aspect of uniform is safety. We need to be able to identify our students, whether it is on the way to and from school, or on the school grounds. Please support us in our pursuit to have all students in uni-form.

As I indicated earlier in the year, I have been collect-ing student work books. I have generally been happy with the quantity and quality of the work submitted but far too many students have not put enough effort into its presentation. Ag Roundup It’s been a busy few weeks on the Ag farm. We had a very successful weekend at the Wee Waa Show. Students from the Show team participated in the Junior Cattle Judging. Congratulations to Emily Shearin and Madison Galagher for coming 1st and 2nd! Well done girls!

Thank you to Auscott for sponsoring our new Wee Waa Show team shirts. The shirts look great.

We entered a trio of lambs into the show, taking out first place. Thanks to the students who spent the time giving them a shampoo and blow dry in preparation for the show! They were certainly the whitest sheep there!

Our vegies also gained some 1st and 2nd places in the produce section – 1st for QLD Blue pumpkin, 1st for Jap pumpkin and 2nd for beetroot and spinach.

-Mrs Gett and Tracey Mortimer also managed to win their heat in the cross cut saw. Unfortunately, we were knocked out in the final. Rhys Mortimer and Travis Dixon won their final, taking out the junior cross cut saw. Well done boys! All the practice on the Ag farm certainly paid off! All in all a very successful show for Wee Waa High School!

Many thanks to Anna Madden for donating the school some meat chickens for a 4 week growth trial. Yr 7/8, 9/10 and 11 ag have all been amazed at the growth of the meat chickens compared to the isa browns. Anna will collect the chickens this week, and we will run another trial later in the year.

The quail have settled in well to the Ag farm and will be laying us some speckled eggs shortly. If anyone has an incubator no longer required, we would love to start incubating some quail eggs to increase our flock.

Bonnie, Clyde & Betty White Mr O’Shea and his Hospitality students plan to pickle the quail eggs for later use.

A huge thank you to Mark Gett for donating three purebred dorper ewes to the school. The sheep arrived last week and are ready to lamb anytime soon so our dorper flock has doubled in size!

Calling out for old machinery- We are looking for some harrows if anyone has any lying around, our planter has done a great job with the oats emerging. Some small harrows would be great to help with the covering of the seed for future plantings. Once the oats are established we will be looking at planting some lucerne crops in other paddocks so the students have a few different crops to study, and the stock have alternative feed sources. We are also in need of some hilling up implements for the vegie patch if any community members could help.

I continue to be blown away by the support of the Wee Waa community so thank you! Verity Gett

Athletics Carnival

On Friday 23rd, Wee Waa high school hosted its annual athletics carnival. Despite competitors being a bit down this did not dull the competition or the enthusiasm. Competition was strong amongst all the age groups and the spirit willing.

All the age groups were fiercely fought and the support of all the other competitors was especially pleasing. It was also extremely pleasing to see so many parents help support the carnival and the competitors.

I would like to give special thanks to all the staff, parents and community members that made this carnival one of the most successful that I’ve been a part of.

The winning house and age champions will be announced at the assembly on Wednesday.

Mr Patrick Legge

Science and Engineering Challenge The North West Regional qualifier of the annual National Science and Engineering Challenge was held on Thursday, 29th May. This year, 25 Year 9 and 10 students were selected to represent the school. The challenge, which is run by the University of Newcastle, was held at the Crossing Theatre in Narrabri and included other high schools from the region.

The format of the day was simple, after a brief introduction, the students were divided into 8 groups and each assigned a task that required a number of high level problem solving skills and an ability to function as part of a team. The tasks included: making a catapult to throw a tennis ball, building a bridge that can support weight, designing a hovercraft to navigate an obstacle course, directing electricity flow around a city, and designing a house and a tower to withstand a number of physical tests. The students all showed excellent skills and initiative in undertaking these activities, and all achieved high results. Our team also placed first in two of the tasks, one in which a vehicle was designed to drive and be controlled using only a balloon, and the other where a pipeline was designed to move water into specific destinations.

Our excellent results meant that at the end of the day, we were one of the final two schools in the running for first place at the Challenge. In a photo finish, we were just beaten to the post, however, the students should all be extremely proud of the effort and skill that they showed throughout the day, as they were a credit to the school. Everyone left the day in high spirits, and all showed that Wee Waa High is extremely competitive with the best schools in the North West.

Mathematics in the Junior School – Wee Waa High School 2014 In 2014 Wee Waa High School has been teaching the new NSW Mathematics K – 10 syllabus to Years 7 and 9. Year 8 and 10 have continued to use the existing syllabus. School Organisation

During transition in Year 6, students are assessed on their assessments, students are either placed into the 7/8 composite class, for the higher ability students who have the capacity to work independently, or the Year 7 class. Students in the 7 – 8 class are catered for with adjusted classwork and some extension work. Extra assistance is available for students having difficulty through extra tuition at lunch time or after school if required and in the literacy and numeracy class. In Year 9 – 10 three Mathematics courses are available and classes are organised depending on the needs and ability of students. All these courses are offered at Wee Waa High. The courses range in difficulty from the 5.1 to the 5.3 course. The 5.3 course is the most difficult course but the extra topics are essential for understanding the Preliminary and HSC Mathematics course. The 5.2 course is the mathematical pathway for the senior school for General Mathematics. If you have any concern, please contact Head Teacher Mathematics or the Principal.
