Our program makes us unique compared to the private andindependent schools in the area because we are coed and K8. When students first walk through the doors of our school forkindergarten, they begin their journey of mind and spirit, whichprepares them for a bright future. In the primary grades (K2),the children learn how to become students. They learn thefundamentals of reading, writing, and arithmetic and receivethe benefit of a balanced, traditional Catholic education. Duringthe intermediate grades (35), we slowly reduce the scaffoldingand support for the students as they develop moreresponsibility for their work and behavior. By the time thestudents reach middle school (68), they have the fundamentalskills to be successful students and we create an environmentwhere students feel safe to take chances in their learning andleadership opportunities. By focusing on the 21st century skillsof Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, andCommunication, teachers in middle school prepare studentsfor a successful transition to high school. An added benefit ofour middle school experience is that the students get tobecome the leaders on campus as opposed to starting over ata middle school that is part of a high school. The benefit ofbeing the oldest students in the school boosts confidence andprepares our students for future success.

Finally, I would like to invite everyone to join us for theStrategic Plan Unveiling on October 26th, from 6 to 7:30PMin the gym. This will be our opportunity to share the incrediblehard work done by members of the School Board, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and parents of alumni. This StrategicPlan creates a map for a bright future at Cathedral and we areeager to share it with the community. Town Hall sessions willbe held two weeks later to allow everyone time to read anddigest the plan. The dates for the Town Hall sessions areNovember 7th from 8 to 9AM and November 10th from 1:30to 2:30PM. We look forward to seeing you there!

Middle School Update

Dear Parents,

Step Up to Middle School Day provided us with a wonderful opportunity to highlight thesignature programs we offer. As we prepare for our November 2nd Open House, wewant to share a little bit about our program.

Beginning in sixth grade, students are paired with a Middle School facultyadvisor. The Advisory program is designed to foster development of academicand social skills. Advisory groups comprise a mix of sixth, seventh, and eighthgrade students. Students remain with their assigned advisor throughout theirMiddle School tenure. Advisory offers an array of experiences including monthlyactivities with prayer buddies, teambuilding, guest speakers on the topic ofleadership and adversity, and academic skill development.

Middle School has a fully integrated 1:1 technology program. All sixth gradestudents receive a Chromebook that they use in school during their MiddleSchool years. Chromebook use is a part of all core academic subjects andseveral specialty subjects. Teachers use Google Drive, Google Classroom, videouploading and editing software, research databases, and many more onlineresources to supplement instruction.Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students engage in a onceperweek socialjustice class. The class is designed to teach students about social issues in themodern world and provide them with service opportunities to develop globalcitizenship.During eighth grade, students participate in a yearlong capstone project. Eachstudent works with a group of peers to develop a 48 minute TEDstyle talk on asocial justice issue. The talks are shared during the Faith in Focus LeadershipConference.Sixth grade students participate in an overnight retreat. The Stars and Stripes program is a servicebased program that places eachstudent on a team. Teams are responsible for designing and completing serviceprojects. Each team is awarded points for its service efforts, and the winningteam receives the Stars and Stripes Cup for the next year.

These are just a few of our signature events. During the coming weeks, we look forwardto sharing more about the Middle School curriculum and some of our other signatureprograms. Sincerely,

Brent DawsonMiddle School Dean

Lower School Update

Dear Parents, Thank you to everyone who attended our first annual Math Night on Wednesday,October 12. Over 150 students and parents participated in a "scavenger hunt" as theytraveled around the school completing nine different math activities! If you didn't have achance to stop by the library to learn more about Bedtime Math, I encourage you tocheck out the "Bedtime Math" app where you can access a daily math problem as wellas a surprise problem! The FREE app is available for iPhone/iPad or Android.

Congratulations to our Bedtime Math raffle winners who took home a BedtimeMath book to enjoy:Kindergarten Marina D. and Colin F.PreFirst Sylvia B.1st Grade Lena M. and Billy P.2nd Grade Hattie F. and Ellie W.3rd Grade Bing B., Patrick B., and Finn K.4th Grade Delilah F., Luke T., and Campbell D.5th Grade Will N. and Lucy W. Another stop on the "scavenger hunt" was theEstimation Station where students took their bestguess at the number of treats in the jar with thehope of having the lucky number. Estimating issuch an important math skill as it relates tomeasurement, data, money, time, space, andmuch more. It allows us to make quick judgmentsabout how much of an item we may need.

Congratulations to our Estimation Stationwinners who took home a jar full of tastytreats:

Msgr. Woy's Weekly Message Dear Friends,

Msgr. Woy asked me to use his weekly message toupdate you on our efforts toward enhancing theefficiency of our building systems while movingtoward consuming cleaner energy.

If you spend much time in the Cathedral of MaryOur Queen, at some point you have likely said toyourself, "It must cost a fortune to heat this place." Our cathedral was certainly builtduring a time when energy of all forms was plentiful and cheap. To give you a sense ofproportionality, our mechanical plant (the garage building located at the rear of the parkinglot) processes so much electric power that BGE considers it a privately owned electricitysubstation. With that designation comes a range of maintenance requirements such asroutine xrays of the switching equipment. Why do we need so much power? Well, eachof our 26 large chandeliers in the main nave draws 3,500 watts of electricity when fullyilluminated. That does not even take into account the electricity demand of the otherlighting, air conditioning, or general electrical needs of the cathedral, the school, or theparish center. Additionally, our boilers consume nearly 50,000 gallons of heating oil duringan average year.

With the maturing of our buildings, much of the mechanical infrastructure has aged to theend of its normal life expectancy. For example, the chandeliers, wiring, and lightdimmingequipment in the church have reached the end of their expected life. Frankly, we struggleto locate domestic sources for the 1,000 watt chandelier bulbs as the incandescentversion is being phased out. Similarly, the three commercial boilers in the plant building,at 28 years, have reached the end of their life expectancy.

These challenges provide us with tremendous opportunities to not just replace ourequipment with more efficient versions of the existing equipment, but to look to newtechnologies on both the energy consumption end and, just as important, upstream in thetypes of energy we consume and how it is produced. So, I want to take what is left of theallotted space to inform you of our efforts in this area.

We are in the final stage of a summerlong project to replace all three boilers along withthe piping, valves, etc... that comprise our centralized heating system. Of course, thenew boilers are much more efficient than the three being removed. Looking beyond simplyreplacing the boilers, we are building flexibility in the types of fuel we consume. The oldboilers consumed fuel oil only while the new boilers have dual source burners. The newburners use less expensive natural gas while preserving our ability to simply switch overto oil if needed; therefore, the new boilers will use less fuel and will burn less expensivefuel.

Working with a subcommittee of our facility commission, we have selected anarchitect/lighting designer team to lead an assessment of the lighting system. Our plan isto assess the condition of the wiring and dimming system with an expectation ofreplacing the mechanical dimmers with a more modern electronic system as well assubstantial sections of wiring. Furthermore, we will evaluate how to rewire the existingchandeliers with the intention of drawing less power while possibly generating more light. Finally, we will assess the interior architecture with an eye toward using modern lightingdesign and technology to better enhance the architecture and to provide lighting scenesettings that enhance the mood of the church to suit the occasion.

While an upgrade of the lighting system may result in a decrease in electricity consumed,we have also addressed how the electricity we consume is generated. As part of anagreement between Constellation Energy, the Archdiocese of Baltimore, and theCathedral of Mary Our Queen, effective this past April, all of the electricity consumed onour campus is generated via a solar array located just north of town. Assuming thecurrent rate of usage, this 20year agreement should generate annual savings ofapproximately onethird and will move us forward in a profound way toward being betterstewards of the nonrenewable resource that is our planet.

Yours in Christ,

We are pleased to report that we met our goal at theHaiti Carnavale and raised $17,122.40 this year! We have all seen the devastation that has taken placein Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. Much ofthe destruction that we have read about has takenplace in the southern tip of the country, whileGonaives is located in the northern part. We have notbeen able to speak directly to Msgr. Vitesse, thepastor at St. Charles Borromeo, however, we have

heard through another contact that the Cathedral sustained water damage and lossof electricity. That being said, the school that we have been supporting is located ina lower lying area and closer to the ocean than theCathedral, and we do not yet know the condition ofthe school. While we continue to try and speak withMsgr. Vitesse via telephone, we are making plans tosend the money down to our partner parish. We donot know at this point if Msgr. Vitesse will need todivert the money that we are sending for more urgentneeds following the hurricane, but we believe it ismore important that we send what we can for theparish. As we learn more details, we will continue tocommunicate them to you. Thank you all for your support of our partner parish!
