Issue 05 / 26 April 2013

The second term of our 20th Anniversary year has begun as a true reflection of our theme, “Foundations of Faith - Footprints for the Future.” The secondary campus has been abuzz with; learning; goal setting based on previous results; and a strong focus on Personal Best (PB) performances in the future. Students, and in particular the Year 12 co-hort, who undertook another QCS trail last week, seem abundantly confident that they are ready to face what lies ahead, both academically and in other aspects of College life in Term 2.

On Monday we were treated to a truly inspirational Chapel performance from a travelling group of Christian music artists - Endless Praise. Their message was clear. We are loved by God and regardless of where each of us are on our personal faith journey’s we are indeed very blessed.

Parent Teacher Interviews – Tuesday 30 AprilNext Tuesday, Parent Teacher Interviews will be held at the College and I encourage students to attend with their parents. The Interim reports, sent home at the end of term, are a point in time report and having marked final pieces of assessment over the break, teachers may be able to update students and their parents on current achievement levels. Perhaps more importantly, the interviews provide the opportunity for students to reflect on Term 1 and to set targets for PBs in Term 2. The partnership between home and school is a very important factor in ensuring ongoing achievement and wellbeing amongst our students. Parents are most welcome to contact College staff should they wish to follow up with teachers or discuss their child’s progress at any stage throughout the year but attendance at these interviews is highly recommended.

Cross CountryCongratulations to Jubi house for their hard-fought win in both the Years 4-6 and the Years 7-12 Cross-Country Car-nivals held at the end of last term. We were blessed with a break in the rain, and all of the competitors were true champions as they supported their Houses and participated with enthusiasm and commitment in the true spirit of the event. A very big thank you is extended to Mr Manion, the members of the Sports Department, the Ground staff and teachers, who all contributed to the organisation and run-ning of the event. Our best wishes go with our District and Inter-Lutheran runners as they move on to the next levels of competition.

Mufti Day – Wednesday 1 May – Camouflage for KokodaThis term’s Mufti Day is being held next Wednesday and students may wear casual attire (with closed shoes and a wide-brimmed hat) for the cost of a gold coin. A full list of dress expectations on free dress days is in the College diary. Funds raised will go to support the work of the KOKODA Youth program – Supporting disadvantaged Youth. Positive Psychology ContinuedGrit, Resilience, Persistence, Perseverence – this term we will investigate how much of this quality our students have. Research by Positive Psychology boffins such as Martin Seligman has shown that young people with a high level of Grit often do better in school. If you are interested in your own Grit score then you may want to visit the Authentic Happiness website and take the test. Our Senior School students will be doing this in Term 2 (http://www.authen-tichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/Default.aspx)

Personal bests and goals You may have noticed that the recent Interim Reports in-cluded a Grade Point Average (GPA) and Effort Point Aver-age (EPA). These are calculated using a 15 point scale (15 is highest and equals an A+). We really want our students to own their GPA and EPA and to set ‘Target GPAs’ and EPAs’. Hopefully as this catches on our students will use the EPA and GPA to set Personal Bests (PBs). LAG teachers are work-ing with their students to help them focus on what is their PB and how they can set SMART Process Goals to achieve their PB’s and improve their EPA and GPA’s. Research has shown that when a student strives for an Academic PB the following increases and improvements occur:• motivation • ‘flow’ states • self-regulation as learners – (more interested & en-

gaged in learning)• enjoyment of school and participation in class• persistence on tasks = GRIT• copes with academic setbacks e.g. a poor mark• academic achievement• relationships with teachers = teacher crucial for self-

improvement• a higher HW completion record

Youth DayCongratulations to the House Captains and other Senior Leaders who ran a very successful Youth Day on the last day of term one. The aim of Youth Day is to bring together the Houses to participate in a series of fun games and activities and celebrate the end of term. It is also an op-portunity for our seniors to showcase their leadership and organisational skills. Great job, leaders.

Tips for ParentsIn this very fast-paced world it is often difficult to keep up with the latest social networking sites. For example, have you heard of Kik, Ask Fm, Formspring, Instagram, SKOUT? The list is seemingly endless. For those of you who need a bit of an update on what’s going online then you may want to check out a useful site called Your Sphere for Parents. It gives some handy tip on living in a healthy and safe digital world. Find it at www.internet-safety.yoursphere.com/Another useful site is The Kids Are All Right (www.thekid-sareallright.com.au) is an Australian website dedicated to parents of teenagers. It helps you navigate the challenges and joys of raising teenagers by providing information, articles and a supportive online community where parents can share advice and share the load. Topics covered include parenting, health and wellbeing, drugs and alcohol, rela-tionships, technology, school and outside school.

Whole Cohort Study Sessions for Years 11 and 12As part of our ongoing support for our senior students’ reg-ular whole cohort study sessions are held each term. These are attended by all students in the cohort as well as senior teachers from all the faculties. It is a wonderful opportunity to work collaboratively and get immediate support from teachers as assessment tasks are tackled. A letter informing parents has been sent home and if your child cannot attend these compulsory sessions then please return the signed apology to SS Admin or me.

NAPLANWeek 5 this term heralds the arrival of the annual NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) series of tests. Since the first tests in 2008 they have be-come a regular element of school calendars and a source of seemingly endless media reports on the standards of schools, of teaching, and of our students. I enjoy the week. The formality, the rigour, the intriguing items – even the James Bond nature of test security. Our students should also look forward to the week. It offers them an opportu-nity to gain a snapshot of their strengths and weaknesses in the two fundamental areas of literacy and numeracy. At St Andrews we use the results of these tests in conjunction with other forms of assessment to gain an increased under-standing of our students and, equally importantly, to reflect upon our program of teaching and learning in the College. To examine in the cold light of someone else’s assessment items, where we have strengths in our students’ learning and where we could focus more attention.

My own children will each undertake their first NAPLAN week in the coming two years and I look forward to the ‘arms length’ analysis that this will provide to my wife and to me. For despite the hundreds of children that I see daily, I view my own children in isolation – wrapped up in the cocoon of love that I have for them and the sometimes myopic vision I have of their achievements. Will we sticky tape their results to the wall and point to them each morn-ing? No, of course not. Nor will we sit our son down and ask him to explain his results in light of his sister’s achieve-ments. However, we will encourage them before they head off each morning, we will continue to read to them at night, we will listen to the mind-numbing times tables in the car each day, and we will continue to understand that the greatest gift we can provide for them in their school-ing is a love of learning and a curiosity about life that will

Growth MindsetFeedback from interim reports may have led to produc-tive discussions at home over the holidays. Whilst they are a ‘snapshot’ of Term one, they are useful to further the discussions with our children about their attitude and ap-proach to learning and being in community. Many students are receiving feedback that their attitude and behavior choices from last term had positive effects; goals were met, grades were good or better than expected, and this term will build on the last. Some students, however, may have had some feedback that improvements are needed.

Dr Carol Dweck offers a few insights that might assist parents helping their children to make the most of this feedback to focus on growth, accomplishment, engage-ment and mastery. Firstly is to be willing to embrace the challenges rather than avoid. If there were examples from last term where your children regularly avoided work, dis-cuss these choices and what might change this term to help motivate a desire to embrace challenge, eg. Study groups, revision each night at a scheduled time. For this to occur a young person has to be willing to persist rather than give-up when faced with obstacles.

Practical experiences can help build persistence, certainly some of our sports training groups are currently building a sense of resilience and persistence through their Kokoda Challenge training – with several teams running over 20 kilometres together, last Sunday morning, learning to deal with discomfort, diminished energy and a significant task.

Some young people start fixing their language and mindset, thinking their efforts are fruitless. To this we need to be ready to talk about effort leading to mastery and that no great skill or achievement came quickly or easily. A good example to illustrate is, Johnny Wilkinson who famously kicked a field goal in extra time in 2003 to win the Rugby World Cup. The media tried to focus on freakish talent or God given ability, but what was revealed was a man who made significant sacrifices socially, disciplined his diet, did not drink alcohol and practiced his kicking before his team mates arrived for training and after they had left. His persistent effort over time has made him one of England’s greatest Rugby players in history.

Any criticism that may appear in reports should not be ignored, but learned from. Reports are simply one form of feedback that students can gain from teachers, and all feedback should be learned from, never dismissed. The final idea that Dweck suggests in creating a growth mind-set in our students and children is not to be threatened, but inspired by the success of others. Creating a positive learn-

Congratulations to:Year 11’s Scott Semple and Joshua Hackett participated in the National Scouting Report for Soccer over the holidays were amongst 400 who trialed, 50 were interviewed and 25 were offered the opportunity of a scholarship to study in America and complete a Degree while playing College Soccer after finishing Yr 12.

Amy-Lee Holborn competed at the Royal Show in Toow-oomba winning her class and was awarded Overall Cham-pion. Also at Nationals she was placed in the top 10.

Kye Wylde, Brady Bastin and Kane Richards competed at the Gold Coast Triathlon recently. Kane and Kye competed in the Opens and Kye placed 7th in the open division, an awesome effort. Brady finished 2nd in his age division.

Term 2 in The ArtsWelcome back to another exciting Term in the Arts life of the College. Below are a few date claimers for this Term: Saturday 25th MayFete Entertainment StageCome along and enjoy performances from some of our most talented young dancers and musicians throughout the day. Tuesday 28th MayDrama Excellence & Yr 10 Performance Evening - 6.30pm - 7.30 pm RBT. Our Drama Excellence class will present a production of “What Are You Doing Here?” by David Campton. The play begins with a crowd on stage. A narrator appears and tries to understand why ordinary people can be turned into such an angry crowd. We see in a series of scenarios the small everyday events that upset people who in turn upset someone else. The Year 10 Drama Class will present their production of David Campton’s “Cagebirds”.We meet eight birds in a cage who are totally absorbed in their own characteristics. When the Wild One is introduced she challenges them to escape – to think of life beyond their cage – but it would seem in the end, freedom seems less appealing than the safety of their prison. These productions are the major assessment task for these classes and they are very excited to share with an audience what they have been working on in class. Wednesday 29th MaySenior Music Evening 6.30pm RBT. Come along and enjoy performances from our Senior Music Students.

Basil Sellers Art and Sport PrizeTo amp up the excitement for the Commonwealth Games, the philanthropist Basil Sellers, who loves Art and Sport equally, allowed this prize to travel to the Gold Coast for the first time. In addition to the exhibition, Basil Sellers also offered $10000 in prize money to school students. Stu-dents had to create an artwork on the theme of Art and Sport. Fifty entries were received in all, from students across the College, and St Andrews was capably represented by 6 artists, with varying interpretations of the theme.

Marcus Kalman (Year 7), Lara Tupper (Year 9), Jasmine Kirk-man (Year 8), Clare Spicer-Brown (Year 10), Thomas White (Year 11) Nathan Podesta (Year 11, and Casey Atkins (Year 12) used a variety of imagery, media and subject matter within their works.

I am pleased to share with the College community that Jasmine Kirkman was awarded a special commendation for her work about Drugs in Sport, and Clare Spicer-Brown was the recipient of one of the two Highly Commended awards of $500.

Congratulations to these students and well done on having your work exhibited at the Gold Coast Art Gallery over the school holidays.

Their efforts can be seen for the next two weeks in the foyer of the new Administration building.

Artist of the TermThe Artist of the Term is a new initiative where we profile and award students for their hard work and artistic efforts each term. Their reward is an iTunes card.

The Artist of Term One is Bree Sly (Year 11). Bree has con-tinued to improve as an Artist in her time at St Andrews, and has achieved a very high mark for her work during last term. Her attention to detail is stunning, and her ability to work across a variety of media is well developed. Bree also produced an essay on self portrait artists that was well researched and well written with a strong analysis of the artworks discussed.
