The Guidance CornerBEACON Program at Baldwin On Tuesday and Wednesday, February 16th and 17th Baldwin seniors had an opportunity to participate in the BEACON program. Coordinated and facilitated by the Baldwin Guidance Department, BEACON (Bringing Economic and Career Opportunities Nearer) was created by Dr. Carolyn Stone, former Supervisor of Guidance for Duval County Schools and William Spiers, Financial Aid for Jacksonville University. They were concerned that too few seniors were pursuing post-secondary education. The BEACON program continues to provide information to seniors to finance their college and career plans. Each year since its’ beginning, the BEACON program has trained volunteers to visit every Duval County Public School high school to advise seniors how to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This February at Baldwin Middle – Senior High School four volunteers joined the Baldwin school counselors as they provided the following information to seniors in small groups:• Completion of the FAFSA is free, takes about thirty minutes to complete and is not

difficult.• Students and their families receive funding from completion of the FAFSA to finance

post-secondary plans• Senior year is the critical year for parents to complete their taxes in a timely manner.

In addition to assisting the seniors with instruction in completing the FAFSA, volunteers also provided the students with an overview on State of Florida Scholarships, loans and grants, including the Bright Futures Scholarship Program. Students completed their Bright Futures Scholarship Program application as a part of the BEACON session. If you are interested in volunteering for BEACON next year in Duval County Public Schools or at Baldwin Middle – Senior High School as a BEACON volunteer, please contact the Baldwin Guidance Department at 266-1200, ext. 1110 for further information.

Middle School Summer Reading This year, students are being asked to choose a book from the list published by Duval County Public Schools, and then complete an activity that they hopefully will find educational and fun. As of this date, the book list has not been published. However, it is expected before the last day of school. Once the list has been released, students will receive a paper copy. At the same time, they will be provided with the directions for the activity. Copies of the book list, as well as the activity will be posted on BMSH’s school website for the summer. Remember, parents do not need to purchase a book unless they so choose. Books can be borrowed from the public library, and some books are even available as free PDFs on the Internet. The PDFs can be found with a simple Google search. Otherwise, parents are welcome to contact their child’s language arts teacher to see what loaner titles are available. One of our goals at BMSH is to encourage students to engage in independent, self-selected reading. Through reading, students will enhance not only their academic achievement but also the overall quality of their lives. Reading 20 minutes a day can make all the difference.

Summer is a Great Time for Achieve 3000 Now more than ever, it is important for students to practice reading, as the ability to read dictates a person’s quality of life. To encourage students to keep up with their reading of non-fiction, middle-school teachers are offering students a jump start on their language arts grades for next year. Ten points extra credit will be awarded for each Achieve activity completed at 70% accuracy or higher, up to a total of 100 extra credit points to be added into first quarter grades. Beyond extra credit, the other, more important benefit to students is that completing these articles over the summer should help increase their Lexile levels. Parents and students are encouraged to log on to Achieve 3000 today and begin tracking reading levels. It’s really exciting to see them grow!

High School Summer Reading Research in reading and learning has shown that students who do not read during the summer months fall far behind those students who do spend at least 20 minutes a day continuing to read when school is not in session. In fact, according to a report released [in June of 2011] by the RAND Corporation, the average summer learning loss in math and reading for American students amounts to one month per year. (Smink, 2011) This kind of setback can have a HUGE impact on students’ progress as they enter each school year. We, at Baldwin, don’t want our students to fall behind, so we encourage them and their parents to read, read, read! In an effort to combat this loss of reading skill, the high school English department will be sharing summer reading options with students within the next two weeks. Students will be asked to choose a book from the 2016 DCPS reading list according to their grade and reading levels. Students will be getting a list, along with specifics about the assignment options, in their English classes within the next two weeks. The information will also be posted on the BMSH website, so students and parents can access it during the summer months. If you have any questions, you may contact the school or your student’s current English teacher. Have a great summer, and
