Despite all our best plans, things don’t always work out as intended. Part of educating children for life is to prepare them by teaching them a range of strategies for coping when they can’t manage to do what they’d set their hearts on. One such way of them avoiding dwelling on disappointment is for them to focus on doing something they enjoy.

It is important to encourage the children to get out there and do something fun, something they’re good at, something that makes them laugh. Holidays can be the perfect chance for this to happen as there are often less commitments and fewer structured activities.

Lyrics from a favourite song we share at school reminds the children of the value of enjoying their ‘free time’ when it says:

‘Your body needs relaxation,

Some rest and recreation.

Just move away from tension,

We thought we ought to mention,

That’s just what your body needs’

I look forward to finding the children well rested and ready for an exciting term starting on Monday, 30th April.

I wish you all a safe and happy break.

Busy as Bees

On a recent Wednesday bee group outing we opened our school hive and we removed the honey which was ready for extraction.

Mya and Annabel lifted the top honey box off the hive so that we could look at our brood boxes and check the hive was healthy.

It was a very good day for doing bees as the sun was shining. We were covered in bees all over our suits but none of us were frightened. Duncan was in charge of the smoker and the girls were in charge of lifting out the frames.

It was difficult to not squash bees but we tried our best. Annie removed the capping off some of the brood so we could see the bee in the larvae stage. Annabel saw a bee hatching.

Duncan likes the drones the best as they don’t sting and Maya enjoyed having all the bees buzzing on her suit and knowing she would be fine.

We brought some of the honeycomb to school for everyone to try and everybody loved it. It was really fun so we can’t wait to come back next week.

The elusive Peter Rabbit failed to turn up for the official opening of his new village.

It’s official, Gary Tong, Southland District

Council Mayor, presenting the Code Compliance

Certificate to the designers, planners and

builders of Peter’s new village.

We are all waiting for Peter.

The crowd assembled.

What, still no Peter!

The ribbon was cut, but where was Peter?

Most probably in Bernie’s garden.

Congratulations to Annabel Innes for achieving

this ribbon following a successful dressage season

Victor putting Duncan through

the hoops on the spooner board.

What’s been happening in Garston this term.

We warmly welcome Destiny and Greg Harpur and their son Nation to our school family.

To:

♦ Nick McNamee and Groundworks for shifting the two rear sheds so our new storage container could be positioned on site.

♦ N.Z. Adventures, and High Country Journeys for their generous donations following their cross-country tours on Castle Hill, Fairlight and Nokomai Stations.

♦ An enormous thank you to Brendan at King Beats following the music festival held recently at Kingston. Brendan has generously contributed proceeds from the festival to local groups, all of whom are extremely grateful for his support. Garston School has benefitted from an amazing donation of $5000. Also thanks to Laura Douglas at Real Country who made a donation from her Stock Whip Cracking instruction which was held at the festival. That was a cracking good idea. What a fantastic boost for our local community.

♦ Thanks to all those who have supported Garston School through the Southfuels fuel for Schools programme.

I’m sure this new high jump pad would be an excellent addition to the School.
