Welcome to the Summer term at Haigh Road School! This is always a VERY, VERY busy term in school with lots going on for all of the children, so please read this newsletter and keep it handy so that you know what’s going on, when. Please do not rely on the texting service! More details inside.

Wedding News!! We’d like to say Congratulations and Good Luck to Mrs Hall who we used to know as Mrs Foster!! She got married over the Easter weekend and we’re sure you’ll agree that she looked beautiful!! Mr Hall looked okay too!

Reception Places for September All of the offers have now gone out for Reception for September (and Y3 for our Y2 Children). Hopefully everyone got their first choice. Regardless of whether you got your first choice place or not, you need to accept your offered place, otherwise you may find that your child doesn’t have a school place at all in September. If you didn’t get your first choice and are wanting to appeal the decision, you are entitled to do this, however it’s recommended that you accept your offered place in the meantime. For Haigh Road the number to ring is 0113 378 3070, for Holy Trinity C of E (previously Rothwell C of E), the number is 0113 273 9190 and for our Year 2 parents the number for Rothwell Victoria is 0113 393 2926, option 4 for the office.

NITS (Headlice) Once again we have cases of headlice in school. Treatments do not have to be expensive—ordinary hair conditioner does a very effective job—lice cannot cling to the hairs when the conditioner has been applied and are easy to comb out with an appropriate comb. School sells ‘Bug Buster’ combs for £1.00 each.

Nursery will be closed

all day on:

Wednesday 3rd July

This is for our new children and their parents/carers to come and have a look

around and meet the staff before they start in September.

WEATHER

Two things about the weather we get at this time of year……!!! The sun may be out and the sky may be blue, but there can still be a chill in the air, and so many children come to school without a coat!!! PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE stil l send your children to school w ith a coat, or a jacket or a fleece (with their name in!!!!!!)! Children play outside regardless of the weather. BUT as the weeks go on and the days (hopefully) get warmer, the children may to need to wear sun cream. If this is the case, please apply a ‘once a day’ application before school.

Sun creams ARE NOT allowed in school!!! They make the hard floors very, very slippery and the carpets get very sticky when they get sun cream spilled/dropped on them (when, not if!), and as we all know, the children like to share things with their friends, however, it is not at all hygienic when the children start doing this! A hat (again, with a name in!) is recommended and children can bring sunglasses, BUT for both of

these items DO NOT send expensive and/or cherished items into school. School will not accept responsibility for any expensive items that are sent in. We have over 150 children if we include nursery and, although we always try our very best, we can’t keep track of everything!! Also, please make sure your child brings a water bottle every day, with water in it, nothing else!! If any bottles are found with juice or flavoured water, they will be emptied and refilled with water in line with School Food Standards.

RNLI Bake-Sale

Miss Aston would like to say a HUGE ‘Thank you’ to everyone who

supported the stall during the Easter picnic, either by baking or buying.

We raised £185.50 this year, which is enough to buy 1 thermal top, 2

pairs of boots and 1 pair of gloves for a crew member.

The RNLI will be in school on Tuesday 9th July for our Reception children

to talk about the lifeboats, sea and water safety and this has proved a

valuable learning experience for pupils who are now in Year 1 and 2.

We have lots of visits and visitors this term for all of the children:

RECEPTION RNLI On Tuesday 9th July the RNLI will be in school to talk to the reception children about water and beach safety.

Reception Trip to Temple Newsam On Wednesday 19th June our Reception Children (Classes 5 & 6) will be going to Temple Newsam. Your letter will soon be coming home with a permission slip to sign and return to school, along with your £7.00 contribution. Children will need a packed lunch and uniform is not necessary— clothing appropriate to the weather is more important (whatever the weather may be!).

KEY STAGE 1 KS1 Trip to Scarborough On Tuesday 2nd July, all of our KS1 children (Classes 1, 2 & 3) are going to Scarborough for the day, as part of their ’Seaside’ topic. Details to follow regarding lunch (we are trying to see if the catering agency can provide grab bags) and uniform is to be worn, along with a coat and sensible footwear. Letters will be coming home shortly regarding this. The coach will leave a little bit earlier than normal, so PLEASE READ THE LETTER AND MAKE SURE THAT THE CHILDREN ARE HERE ON TIME!!! The coach will not wait for stragglers!!!

Y2 Skipping Competition This will take place on Thursday 6th June for those Y2s who are selected. If your child has brought a letter home, please sign and return it as soon as possible.

Y2 Dodgeball Competition This will take place on Monday 17th June. Again, only selected Year 2s can go as we can’t take the whole year group.

Y2 Junior Warrior This will take place on Thursday 20th June, but this time it’s for all our Y2s and should be lots of fun!!! Letters have been sent home. Please return your slip and £7.50 as soon as possible.

Y2 Bowling Trip And finally, as a thank you to our fantastic Year 2s for all their hard work during their time here and particularly whilst doing their SATs, there will be a trip to the Bowling Alley on Wednesday 17th July, and the children will have lunch there. There will be no charge to parents for this, but please support any fundraising in school as this all helps towards these kind of costs. Uniform must be worn on this day.

KS1 TRIP TO SCARBOROUGH

On Tuesday 2nd July, our KS1 children (classes 1, 2 and 3) are all going to Scarborough for the day as part of their ‘Seaside’ topic. A letter will be coming home regarding this, but please mark it on your calendar as the children will need to be in school earlier than normal on this day as the coach is leaving at 8:30am. The children will possibly need to bring a packed lunch. We’ll let you know when we know. More details regarding uniform, coats, etc. will be included in the letter when it comes home.

Skipping Festival Thursday 6th June sees the Skipping Festival!!! 30 of our Y2 children have already been selected to travel to Wetherby High School to try their very best! Please make sure that your child is in school on time if they’ve been selected to be part of our team, as the bus is leaving early!!! Set that alarm!

Year 2 Bowling As a thank you to our Super Year 2 children for working so hard during their SATs, we’re taking them bowling on Wednesday 17th July. Lunch will also be included. A letter will come home nearer the time.

SPORTS DAY

Sports Day will be a little bit

different this year—more

details about that later, but

for those of you who need to

book time off work, the first

option is the afternoon of

Friday 5th July. If the

weather is

unkind, we

will try again

on Friday

12th July in

the afternoon.

Transition is an exciting and busy time for all of the children, the staff, and the mums and dads! For Nursery children moving into Reception and Reception children moving to KS1 the sessions will happen in school during the day in the second half of the term, after the new classes

have been arranged and we know which class each child is going into. More information will be given out at the relevant meetings.

Year 2 The Year 2 children going to Rothwell Victoria will have three visits. The first will be a short visit, followed by two full days later on:

Monday 8th July: Year 2s go to Rothwell Victoria for Assembly, a tour of the school and playtime before coming back to Haigh Road. Please bring your child(ren) to Haigh Road as usual and they will be walked over to Victoria and brought back by Haigh Road staff and you can collect them from Haigh Road as usual at the end of the day.

Monday 15th July — Full day visit. Please bring your child to Haigh Road and collect from Haigh Road as usual. Tuesday 16th July — Full day visit. Again, please bring your child to Haigh Road and collect from Haigh Road as usual. Tuesday 16th July—Evening meeting for Y2 parents. The parents of the current Y2 children are invited over to Rothwell Victoria Junior School at 6:00pm to meet the staff and see the classrooms that your children will be in in September. The children will have lunch provided by Rothwell Victoria on the full days that they attend. Obviously there is no charge for this, but if the children have school meals in September, they must be paid for from Y3 onwards. The cost will be advised (last year was £2.40 per day (£12.00 per week)). Milk money will be £30.00 for the whole of the year (payable in September).

Year 1 and Reception The current Year 1 and Reception children will visit their new classes during the same days at Haigh Road.

Nursery Nursery children who are staying with us will visit their new teachers and classrooms during their nursery sessions. These visits will be arranged between the teachers concerned. All new class lists will be sent home at a later date.

Page 9: Wedding News!!€¦ · This will take place on Monday 17th June. Again, only selected Year 2s can go as we can’t take the whole year group. Y2 Junior Warrior This will take place

There will be meetings for the parents to attend as well! Reception Parents (Current Nursery Children) For our new Reception parents, the meeting will be on Monday 1st July. There will be two sessions, and following the meeting there will be a chance to see your child's new classroom (both sessions will cover the same content). Your child does not attend this meeting with you. They will have visits to their new class during their nursery sessions, along with other friends who will be in the same class as them. The letters with the times of the meetings will be sent home in due course. Year 1 Parents (Current Reception Children) For our new Year 1 parents, the ‘Welcome to Year 1’ meeting will be on Tuesday 9th July at 2:00pm. Again, there will be a chance for parents to visit their child’s new classroom and meet the class teacher after the meeting. Year 2 Parents (Current Year 1 Parents) For our new Year 2 parents, the ‘Welcome to Year 2’ meeting will be on Wednesday 3rd July at 2:00pm. Once again, there will be a chance for parents to visit their child’s new classroom and meet the class teacher after the meeting. Year 3 Parents (Current Year 2 Parents) As stated opposite, the meeting for our current Year 2s moving to Year 3 at Rothwell Victoria is at Rothwell Victoria on Tuesday 16th July at 6:00pm

Well , the film night was a great success, with all the children enjoying themselves! The next event for the PTA is the Fathers Day Gift Room, which will be on Wednesday 12th June. Please watch for the letters coming home and make sure that you return your slip AND payment as soon as possible, so that the PTA can make sure that they have enough gifts for everyone. It’s not fair on the ladies of the pTA to leave it to the last minute. The Summer Fair will take place on Saturday 29th June. Lots of stalls/rides are booked and it should be a good afternoon! Hopefully, the weather will play nicely and everyone can enjoy the day. Then , on Thursday 18th July, the PTA will be hosting our Year 2 leavers disco. More details later.

? No!!!

Yes, it’s that time again folks!!! Simon Cowell eat your heart out!! We know what true talent is as we’ve got so much of it at Haigh Road. The competition will take place on Friday 19th July and the children can do whatever they like (within reason!!). Auditions will be taking place after the half term holiday, with the chosen acts then having time to practice!! This is only for the kids, so sorry grown-ups, but you’re not invited to this one!!!

Leavers Assembly

Monday 22nd July at 2:30pm will be

our Year 2 Leaver’s Assembly, where our

fabulous Year 2s will say their goodbyes

to Haigh Road before travelling on to

pastures new at Rothwell Victoria or

another school. All parents and carers

are invited and tissues will

be supplied!!!

Just a gentle

reminder that the

speed limit on the

stretch of Haigh

Road where school

is, is 20mph!!!

Reports The children’s school reports will be coming home w/c 1st July. There will not be another Parents Evening this year, so if you feel there is anything in your child’s report that you want or need to discuss, please speak to your child’s teacher directly to arrange a time to do this. The children and staff have all worked extremely hard during this year. Well done!!!

Pyjamarama On Friday 7th June, we will be participating the Book Trusts ‘Pyjamarama’ event. The school will be raising money for the Book Trust’s campaign to ensure that all children have the opportunity to have a bedtime story. For a donation of £1, the children are invited to wear their pyjamas and to bring their favourite book to school to share with their class. Please keep an eye out for further details on specific events and competitions.
