Why a separate Spatial Ability test? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Non– verbal Reasoning and Spatial Ability formed one test battery in CAT3. CAT4 has a more refined focus on these two types of thinking. This is because research has found that:
• Splitting the test gives a more accurate assessment of a pupils’ potential, allowing schools to identify those with exceptional levels of spatial ability more precisely.
• Such pupils can find it more difficult to learn in school, as teaching in STEM subjects has a strong verbal bias, so pupils cannot play to their strengths even in subjects where spatial ability is critical.
The new Spatial Ability test has been developed building on research which confirms the importance of assessing spatial ability to develop and support spatial skills.
