Welcome to St. Edward’s Episcopal Church – established in 1968. This leaflet is your guide to the liturgy and is a resource for the material needed for this service. You will find three books in the pew rack in front of you - The 1979 Book of Common Prayer (red book), The Hymnal 1982 (blue book) and LEVAS (Lift Every Voice and Sing II - black and red cover). Hymn numbers preceded by ‘S’ are from the Service Music at the front of the Hymnal 1982. It is customary to stand during the singing of hymns, unless otherwise directed. It is perfectly appropriate to either stand, sit, or kneel for prayers. If you are visiting with us today, please be sure to fill out a Visitor Card (found in the pew in front of you) and give it to one of our ushers. We are blessed that you are here, and we look forward to meeting you! September is a month of experiencing different liturgies from our worldwide Anglican Communion. This Sunday our liturgy comes from the Church of England’s Common Worship.

We are also experimenting with ways help us facilitate the flow of our worship services. Here are two things we are implementing this month:

Today’s flowers are given to the glory of God.

1. Announcements will be made after the prelude and before the opening hymn.

2. The Peace will be passed with each person staying in place - passing the peace with those immediately in front, to the sides and back of you.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAYLet us pray. There is a short pause for silent prayer, after which the Celebrant prays the Collect:Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always

THE COLLECT FOR OUR PARISHOur loving and heavenly Father, please pour down your Holy Spirit upon this parish, and grant us a new vision of your glory, a new experience of your power, a new faithfulness to your Word, a new consecration to your service, so that, through our renewed witness, your Holy name may be glorified and your kingdom advanced; through Jesus Christ our Lord. LITURGY OF THE WORDTHE LESSON PROVERBS 22:1-2, 8-9, 22-23

Order of Mass – Proper 18 | O r d i n a r y T i m e Page | 5

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all. He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail. He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor. Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: For the Lord will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL PSALM 125The People read responsively as indicated.1. They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion,

which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.2. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem,

so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.

3. For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous;

lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity.4. Do good, O Lord, unto those that be good,

and to them that are upright in their hearts.5. As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways,

the Lord shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.

THE EPISTLE JAMES 2:1-10, 14-17

My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; and ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? Do not they

Order of Mass – Proper 18 | O r d i n a r y T i m e Page | 6

blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE HYMN 8:00 Instrumental

10:30 Where cross the crowded ways of life HYMN 609

All Stand for the GospelTHE GOSPEL MARK 7:24-37Before reading the Gospel, the Priest prays quietly the following prayer:

Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim your holy gospel.

On arriving at the station from which the Gospel is read, the Gospeller says:The Lord be with you.And also with you.The Holy Gospel () of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.Glory to you, O Lord.

And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid. For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet: The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the

Order of Mass – Proper 18 | O r d i n a r y T i m e Page | 7

children's crumbs. And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed. And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.

The Celebrant then kisses the Book, while saying quietly:Through the words of the Gospel may our sins be wiped away.

THE SERMON THE REV. CANON DR. A. GORDON OKUNSANYATHE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

Order of Mass – Proper 18 | O r d i n a r y T i m e Page | 8

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFULThe Intercessor prays the petitions. The People read the words in bold italic.

Let us pray to God for strength and perseverance in his service.

Bless the Church with the spirit of holy poverty, not to trust in wealth or power but only in the enabling of her Lord. Make her ministers faithful heirs of the disciples who were first called to perform great works in a strength not their own.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.Have mercy on a world where many are so anxious for material things that they do not recognise the better way that is open before them. Give to those who hold authority the grace not to be imprisoned in their own power but to see and learn where there is true wisdom.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.Give us light to see the gifts of God in all around us, to honour his presence in our families and friends and neighbours. Open our hearts and our homes to receive those who are sent to be among us.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.Have mercy on all who are sick and bless those who care for them. Give them comfort and hope in their affliction. Release those who are in the power of evil and restore them to wholeness of life.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Preserve those who are under any threat of danger, especially our service men and women.Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.Hear us, O God of Life, as we express our gratitude for all our blessings.

Order of Mass – Proper 18 | O r d i n a r y T i m e Page | 9

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.We pray for those who have walked in the way of the Lord through this world and have come to their journey’s end (). May they be at peace in the great family of the faithful departed.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.Let us bring our own prayers to God, the loving Father of us all, either silently or aloud.

The Celebrant concludes the Prayers, by saying:Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our

Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE PEACEThe Celebrant introduces the Peace, reminding all to remain standing, exchanging the peace with those immediately around you.

We are the body of Christ. In the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Let us then pursue all that makes for peace and builds up our common life.

The Celebrant then says:The peace of the Lord be always with you;And also with you.Let us offer each other a sign of peace.

PREPARATION OF THE TABLE Taking the paten with the bread the Celebrant says:

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation: through your goodness we have this bread to set before you, which the earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life.Blessed be God for ever.

The Celebrant adds a little water to the wine in the cup and says quietly:By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.

Taking the cup with wine the Celebrant says:Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation: through your goodness we have this wine to set before you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become for us the cup of salvation.Blessed be God for ever.

The Celebrant prays quietly:Lord God, we ask you to receive us and be pleased with the sacrifice we offer you with humble and contrite hearts.

At the lavabo the Celebrant says quietly:Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

The Celebrant continues: Pray, my brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your handsfor the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTSThe Celebrant now says the prayer over the gifts,

Gracious God, as we come to share in your table, cleanse us and refashion us with the new life of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYERThe Celebrant facing the People says,

The Lord be with you.And also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.From sunrise to sunset this day is holy, for Christ has risen from the tomband scattered the darkness of deathwith light that will not fade. This day the risen Lord walks with your gathered people, unfolds for us your word, and makes himself known in the breaking of the bread. And though the night will overtake this dayyou summon us to live in endless light, the never-ceasing sabbath of the Lord. And so, with choirs of angelsand with all the heavenly host,we proclaim your gloryand join their unending song of praise:

THE SANCTUS (S1114)The Celebrant and People sing:

Order of Mass – Proper 18 | O r d i n a r y T i m e Page | 1 2

The Celebrant, with hands extended, says:Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and winemay be to us the body and bloodof our Lord Jesus Christ;who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks;he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:TAKE, EAT; THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU;DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.

In the same way, after supperhe took the cup and gave you thanks;he gave it to them saying:DRINK THIS, ALL OF YOU;THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW COVENANT,WHICH IS SHED FOR YOU AND FOR MANYFOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.DO THIS, AS OFTEN AS YOU DRINK IT, IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.

THE MYSTERY OF FAITH

Order of Mass – Proper 18 | O r d i n a r y T i m e Page | 1 3

Great is the mystery of faith:Christ has died:Christ is risen:Christ will come again. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made oncefor the sins of the whole world;rejoicing in his mighty resurrectionand glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory,we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrificeof praise and thanksgiving,we bring before you this bread and this cupand we thank you for counting us worthyto stand in your presence and serve you.

Send the Holy Spirit on your peopleand gather into one in your kingdomall who share this one bread and one cup,so that we, in the company of the Most Glorious, Blessed, Ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Saint Edward, and all the Saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. AMEN.

THE LORD’S PRAYERLet us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;thy kingdom come; thy will be done;on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Order of Mass – Proper 18 | O r d i n a r y T i m e Page | 1 4

And lead us not into temptation;but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREADWe break this bread to share in the body of Christ.Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

The Celebrant takes a small piece of the consecrated bread and places it in the wine, saying quietly:

May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it.

Behold the Lamb of God; behold Him who takes away the sin of the world.Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed.

COMMUNION ANTIPHONThe Celebrant receives communion and then says the Communion Antiphon.

Come to me, all who labour and are burdened, and I will refresh you, says the Lord.
