Yousuf (1858-1915)===================================================== G O O D M O R N I N G B E T - N A H R A I N =====================================================EARTHQUAKE ROCKS NORTHERN BET-NAHRAINRU (Baghdad) Last Wendesday, an earthquake which shook a large portion of the Middle East also hit Nineveh and Mosul 250 miles north of Baghdad at 07:17 a.m. The tremor measured 5.5 on the Richter scale caused no damage. The earchquake was also felt in Baghdad. The same quake caused 12 deaths and at least 69 injuries when it hit parts of Israel, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the Gaza Strip and West Bank, waking people with a jolt and causing buildings to sway. Libya claims that Wednesday's shaking was the result of Israeli nuclear tests in the Gulf of Aqaba.STRONG BLAST DESTROYS SADDAM'S SPY CENTERRU (Nicosia)- The Iraqi Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) said local headquarters of the Baathist regime in northern Bet-Nahrain was blown up on Nov. 16, killing 12 security guards and wounding more than 20. The IBC reported that the two-story building ``was used to direct spying and espionage activities in the liberated area of northern Iraq.'' The IBC, based in the town of Salahuddin, is affiliated to the London-based

opposition Iraqi National Congress.ROBERT DEUTSCH FAILS TO SETTLE KURDISH DISPUTERU (ANKARA) U.S.-sponsored peace talks to resolve a feud between rival Iraqi Kurdish factions in northern Bet-Nahrain have ended without a settlement. Robert Deutsch left northern Bet-Nahrain last Monday after a week of shuttle diplomacy between the two Kurdish political groups. The two parties have been locked in a sometimes violent dispute for 18 months and have divided northern Bet-Nahrain into separate spheres of influence. Two earlier rounds of talks in Ireland in August and September yielded few results. Deutsch, the head of the Northern Gulf Affairs Office, met several times with the KDP in the town of Salahuddin and the PUK in the nearby city of Erbil but the two sides themselves never met. Iraq criticized Deutsch's mediation as ``a flagrant and impudent intervention in Iraq's internal affairs.'' Meanwhile, Turkey is disturbed over talks between German Christian Democrat Party member, Heinrich Lummer, and the leader of the terrorist PKK organization Abdullah Ocalan in Damascus during the last few days in November.KURDISH LEADER CALLED A DRUG SMUGGLERTN (Ankara) Eight international drug-smugglers, reported as members of the Labor Party of Kurdistan (PKK), were caught with over twenty pounds of heroin by the police directorate's anti-smuggling department in Van, Turkey. Police said that the street value of the heroin was 20 billion Turkish Lire and the suspects were trying to smuggle the heroin from Iran to Greece. The leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masoud Barzani said at a press conference in northern Bet-Nahrain that the PKK acted as a "mafia" in drug smuggling and described the leader of the PKK, Abdullah Ocalan as a drug smuggler and secret agent who served the interests of secret services of some countries. Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have been used as transit countries by people, including Assryians from Iraq, seeking to reach Scandinavia. Lithuania is the only one of the Baltic states that has passed a so-called refugee law, which guarantees certain rights for people who arrive on its territory. A lucrative business has grown for smugglers, bringing people from Iraq. Lithuania says it detained 2,000 such migrants last year and the same amount so far this year. There may be as many as 40 Assyrian families remaining in Lithuania, according to the Assyrian sources in Europe.IRAQ IN NEED OF MEDICAL DRUGS WORTH $200 MILLIONRU (Baghdad) - The official al-Iraq daily newspaper said the number of patients afflicted with heart disease, diabetes and cancer was rising, with more than 600,000 of them receiving treatment every month at government clinics and hospitals. The builder of the first Assyrian empire, Shamshi-Adad I (1813-1781 B.C.)conquered Laban (Lebanon), the land of valuable cedar so that he may reach the "marked boundaries of the world." The Hariri Foundation,financed from Prime Minister Hariri's personal fortune, and UNESCO have donated $1.3 million to pay for excavations. The Assyrian Aid and Social Society of Iraq with the assistance of the Assyrian Aid Society of America is expected to bear only four percent of the total expense.RU (Baghdad) An outbreak of cholera has killed three people in northern Bet-Nahrain and has afflicted more than 200 others, said Viktor Wahlroos, deputy U.N. coordinator in Iraq. According to the report the number has increased four- folds since 1990. The rise in premature births and infant mortality was attributed to the economic embargo on Iraq.SILVANA'S OPERATION A SUCCESSZN (Chicago) Silvana Awanis al-Barwari, the Assyrian girl from northern Bet-Nahrain brought to Chicago for medical treatment, has undergone a surgical procedure to correct her severe case of scoliosis, a curvature of the spine. RU (Ankara) Turkish security forces killed 18 Kurdish guerrillas in separate clashes in northern Bet-Nahrain. The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels died in fighting in the provinces of Tunceli, Bingol, Hakkari, Sirnak and Bitlis, the regional governor's office in the city of Diyarbakir said in a statement. More than 18,000 people have been killed in the PKK's 11-year-old fight for Kurdish independence or autonomy in northern Bet-Nahrain.THREAT OF CHOLERA FORCES GOVERNMENT TO CLOSE ROADSRU (Baghdad) Iraq decided Sunday to close highways between Kirkuk and Sulaimaniya and Kirkuk and Erbil in northern Bet-Nahrain in an effort to prevent the spread of cholera, state-run Baghdad radio announced. The radio said a high committee has been set up in Kirkuk, 45 miles south of Sulaimaniya, to take preventive measures against the spread of cholera. Cholera recently killed three people and afflicted over 200 others in northern Bet-Nahrain. Known and recognized as the "King of Singers" in Iraq, Beeba began singing in Assyrian and Iraqi gatherings at age eleven. Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Beeba was influenced by Farid al-Atrash and Oshana Mirza,

and began to sing professionally in 1961. His live performances were accompanied by electric guitars, saxophones, keyboard instruments and drums. His lyrics and voice reflected the experiences of love, suffering, and nationalism of the Iraqi people, enduring the social and political upheavals of 1960's and 70's.Admired by Assyrians, Arabs, Kurds, and Turks alike Beeba and his musician George Ishu released such classics as "Qorba min Aynatee" which sold over 20,000 copies in Iran and Iraq alone. In 1965, President Aref of Iraq recognized Beeba's talent by presenting him with a gold watch. From 1962 to 1979, Beeba continually appeared on the Iraqi television. In later years, Beeba "was stripped of or not allowed to retain his Iraqi citizenship," noted an admirer.Beeba's last wish, according to his wife and ten- years-old daughter Krystel was to be buried in his place of birth. Both Assyrian and Arab communities in Chicago have begun collecting donations from the public and the local businesses. Memorial services were held on Thursday at Mar Gewargis Church in Chicago.SALIBA ALYO MOURNED IN CHICAGOZN (Chicago) Mr. Saliba Alyo, a former president of the Assyrian National Council of Illinois, passed away in Chicago. Saliba was born in Syria and was a member of the Assyrian Democratic Organization (Takasta). During his years of active political participation, Saliba was instrumental in enhancing the cooperation between the the Assyrian Jacobite Church and the Church of the East. MALEK HUSSAIN INSISTS THAT SADDAM MUST GORU (Jordan) Five years after King Hussein sided with Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein in the Gulf War, Jordan's monarch has met Iraqi opposition figures in London in a display of his impatience for a new government in Baghdad. Diplomats say the king would like to host a conference of Iraqi opposition leaders in the Jordanian capital to try and get the disparate opposition together to actively plan for life after Saddam Hussein. The king has called for an Iraqi government composed of the three distinct Kurdish, Shiite Moslem, and the Sunni Moslem populations, making no reference to over a million Assyrians living in central Iraq and northern Bet-Nahrain. Since then hundreds of Assyrian students, professionals, and ordinary technophiles have become aware of ASSYRIA ONLINE, eBABYLON, and SOC-CULTURE-ASSYRIA. In 1995 Assyrian nationalism spanned space, time, and all preexisting social and organizational arrangements, and re- discovered itself in a new form. In a short time Assyrians, and the rest of the world for that matter, discovered the internet. Individuals, organizations and local communities which often relied on long-distance calls and quarterly journals for news and information were now networked with the same communication technology made available to the most technically-sophisticated laboratories and corporations around the world. A student in California was now able to discuss the Christology of the Church of the East with a bishop in Boston. Minutes after her initial request an Assyrian- Canadian received useful information on the whareabouts of her cousin in Germany. In 1885, a group of Assyrians in Bet-Nahrain embarked upon a new experiment: to chronicle every newsworthy event affecting the Assyrian populations in the Ottoman and Persian Empires. Their publications, created using the most efficient printing machinces at the time, contained political commentaries, literary articles, and religious theology. Assyrian nationalism was examined with every article printed in Urmie, Mosul, and Tur- Abdin. The result: a politically-aware generation of nationalists who could represent the inheritors of a glorious past and take their plight to Geneva and Lausanne. Today, once again we are assessing our potential for self- determination. And once again we have equipped ourselves, with the most efficient mean of communication. In 1995 we inspired the future Delegation to the United Nations.

===================================================== G O O D M O R N I N G B E T - N A H R A I N =====================================================CONSTRUCTION OF VILLAGES IN NORTHERN BET-NAHRAIN (BN-Sweden)Three Swedish organizations have completed reconstruction efforts in northern Bet-Nahrain, which included rebuilding of destroyed houses in such Assyrian villages as Kanni, Dori, and Bet- Tanori. It is estimated that nearly 300 residential units have been reconstructed by the Swedish organizations SCHRKP and CARITAS.IRAQI GENERAL KILLED BY THE RESISTANCE GROUP(CNN) Cyprus- Iraqi opposition forces claimed that they killed an Iraqi general in northern Iraq. They also said the Iraqi government retaliated by attacking villages by helicopter.The Iraqi National Congress said that they ambushed and killed Brigadier General Mohamed Hamoudi Aboud al-Taie while he was riding in a convoy at Showan, near Kirkuk. The general's driver was also killed and members of the convoy were taken prisoner by the opposition umbrella group.

Alexander, son of Philip II of Macedon, was born in 356 B.C. He defeated the Persian king Darius in 333, conquered Tyre, Thebes, Jerusalem, Babylon, Susa, and Persepolis in 330 B.C. He died in Babylon in 323 B.C. Mar Bawai is currently the Secretary General of the Inter-Church Relations. ============================== Nineveh Magazine: Vol. 17, No 4 - A "common christological declaration" between the Roman Catholic Church and the Assyrian Church of the East was signed in November 1994. It states that "...Jesus Christ is true God and true Man... His divinity and humanity are united in one person, without confusion or change, without division or separation." -ASSYRIANS ESCAPE TO AMMAN, JORDAN-Thousands of Iraqi Christians (mostly Assyrians), against the wishes of the priests in Iraq and most of the Assyrian political parties in Europe and America, are fleeing their homes in Iraq to seek asylum through the Western embassies in Amman, Jordan. The economey of Iraq, crippled by war and the United Nations sanctions, has wreaked havoc on the lives of all inhabitants of the territory still under the control of Saddan Hussain's Baath Party. An Assyrian family which recently arrived from Amman estimated that over 40,000 Assyrians (Nestorians, Chaldeans, and Jacobites) are in Jordan waiting to emigrate."-THANKS TO CILLER FROM CLINTON-US President Bill Clinton sent a letter to Prime Minister Tansu Ciller thanking her for ending the northern Iraqi operation and withdrawing from the region in accordance with promise. Clinton stated in his letter that the US supports Turkey in the customs union issue with Europe. The President also emphasized that he was pleased with the discussions during Prime Minister Tansu Ciller visit to the US in April. On display are ancient Assyrian palace and temple reliefs, royal statuary, fine metalwork, ivories, and tablets dating from the ninth to seventh centuries B.C. in northern, works in stone, precious metals, ivory, and clay dating back to the 3rd and 2nd millenia B.C. The artifacts will remain on display until August 13, 1995, when the exhibition will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, where it will be exhibited at the Kimball Art Museum from October 1st 1995 to February 4, 1996. -YONAN'S "A FORGOTTEN HOLOCAUST" TO BE TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH-Germany (ZN) - The English version of "A Forgotten Holocaust: The Annihilation of the Assyrian Christians in Turkey" by Dr. Gabriele Yonan, may be published as early as the beginning of next year. The first edition of the book was published in German by the Society for Endangered People. On her last visit to the United States Dr. Yonan organized a committee to oversee the translation of her scholarly research of the Assyrian community's modern history. The Assyrian Foundation of America contributed to the initial investment of this project. The total cost of the translation and printing is estimated to be under $12000.00. The Assyrian United Organziations of California has agreed to finance the entire project and make copies of Dr. Yonan's work to all interested in the modern history of the Assyrian nation.-A UCLA PROFESSOR ADMONISHES MAKERS OF "TRUE LIES"-Los Angeles (ZN) Zenda has recently learned that since earlier this year, Stuart Smith, a research associate of the Institute of Archeology at UCLA has been commenting on the props used in the production of the film "True Lies" featuring Arnold Schwarzenegeer and Tia Carrere. In one scene Tia Carrere's character shows Arnold S. several artifacts, including a winged bull door entrance carving and stating the following: "You see, a lot of these pieces are from ancient Persia." Professor Smith comments that Lightstorm Entertainment which produced the movie was off by 300 years. He continues to say that The Assyrians used winged bulls to flank doorways of major buildings to ward off unwanted intruders. In a response to the spokesman for Lightstorm Entertainment commented that the Carrere character is not specific about which of the antiquities-in a room full of them are Persian. Professor Smith comments that "They did a good job of imitating the original, but someone went to a book and found the pictures. So they must have known what they were making. The report stated that after the bombardment of the residential districts in Erbil and Kani-Qirzala dozens of homes were destroyed. Iraqi forces were backed by 30 tanks and over 50 armored personnel carriers. The number of casualties was not reported. -TURKISH TROOPS IN NORTHERN MESOPOTAMIA-

According to the Turkish Press Agency so far over 300 Kurdish rebels have been killed, while the commander of Kurdish operations reports a loss of only 25 guerilla fighters. Turkish forces continue to prevent the Kurdish fighters to cross the border into Syria where the headquarters of the Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan, head of the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) is located in the Syrian-controled Bekaa Valley. At Zenda press-time the Assyrian Democratic Movement (Zowaa) had made no official statement regarding the conditions of the Assyrian communities in Northern Mesopotamia. Northern Iraq has virtually no international telephone connections and foreign journalists' access has been restricted by the Turkish forces in the region. Turkey, which in March took a key step towards membership of the European Union by signing a customs union with Brussels, has come under harsh criticism from its Western allies over civilian casualties and human rights.-I VOTE YES FOR SOC.CULTURE.ASSYRIAN-Chicago (ZN)- Soon, Assyrians on the internet can enjoy posting to an exclusive newsgroup, namely soc.culture.assyrian. A "request for discussion" or RFD will be posted on April 7 to news.announce.newsgroups. A discussion period will commence immediately, lasting approximately 3 to 4 weeks. A "call for votes" lasting another 21 to 31 days will follow the discussion period. Professor Amir Harrak's research centers around Syriac literature. He is particularly interested in the Assyian amulets, worn to deter evil spirits. Professor Harrak was able to identify one such amulet as dating back to the 18th Century from the Qudshanus region in the Hakkiari. The Kurds of today are also revolting against the Turks, and they massacre Assyrians in the same way as Bader-Khan. They are trying to clear away all non-Kurdish elements... all Assyrians from Tur-Abdin. So the number of 60,000 Assyrians mentioned in Zenda could be right in 1970, not today. Today there are hardly more than 2000 Assyrians in Turkey (Tur-Abdin). N e W s D i G e S t ================================================================================ -TURKISH FORCES INVADE NORTHERN BET-NAHRAIN-(AP) On March 20, on the eve of the Kha B'Nisan celebration, about 35,000 Turkish troops moved into northern Bet-Nahrain through the main road to Zakho against separatist rebels of the PKK, or Kurdistan Workers' Party. Backed by 80 tanks, 100 APC's (armored personnel carriers), 280 vehicles, fighter jets and Cobra helicopters, a stretch of 185-mile front was occupied 40 miles inside the Northern Bet-Nahrain, in pursuit of an estimated 2,800 PKK guerrillas. The offensive is concentrated on the mountainous regions of Sinat-Haftanin, Metina, Sive-Mezi Kervadari and the Kharkurk triangle. The operation was launched after Kurdish rebels killed 15 Turkish soldiers in an ambush near the Bet- Nahrain-Turkey border Saturday. Iraqi Kurdish leaders were surprised by the scale of the offensive and angry because they were not informed beforehand. Turkey's Prime Minister Tansu Ciller said that the operation would last until the "terrorists" attacking Turkey from their bases in northern Bet-Nahrain were totally cleared from the area. Turkish Air Force jets had flown 33 sorties against the rebel positions by early afternoon, and that a total of 12 PKK camps had been targeted. A military spokesman said 76 bombs were dropped on a single camp in the Bote region alone. The United States neither condoned the attack nor condemn the operation. No Assyrian casualty figures have been made available yet. PKK has been battling some 200,000 Turkish soldiers since 1984 to achieve self-rule for Turkey's 12 million Kurds. An estimated 15,000 have died since. Turkey, like Iraq, Iran and Syria, fears its sizable Kurdish minority would be encouraged in its separatist ambitions if the Iraqi Kurds achieved independence. The opposition Iraqi National Congress (INC) claims that, in the Zakho and Dohuk regions where large concentrations of Assyrians reside, Turkish troops had arrested hundreds of men and women, accusing them of being PKK sympathizers. As many as 4500 men and women may have already been abducted by the Turkish troops and transferred inside Turkish territory. The Turkish army is (also) bombarding the villages around Zakho extensively, the INC said in a statement. Turkish paratroopers had dropped on villages 15 miles northeast of Dohuk. But a tank advance towards the district of Shiranish, northeast of the Bet-Nahrain border-town of Zakho, had met heavy resistence from Kurdish guerrillas, it said. According to the Turkish News Agency at least 800 PKK members were killed, where only 8 Turkish soldiers have died in the clashes since Monday. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -ASSYRIAN KILLED IN BET-NAHRAIN-Toronto (ZN) Edward Khoshaba Isho a resident of the village of Blamed in the Aqra region of northern Bet-Nahrain was killed by an angry non-Assyrian mob in Bet-Nahrain. Ten days before, Edward, while tending his sheeps nearby his village was attacked by a group of thieves. In defending his herd, Edward kills two of the robbers and then immediately surrenders himself to the authorities. He was then transferred to a local prison in Dohuk, Bet-Nahrain, where he was kidnapped and taken to the village of Bakerman. An angry mob, waiting for his arrival, begins beating Edward and with three blows of an axe brakes his skull. Edward's body was then taken to the local office of the Democratic Party of Kurdistan in Aqra and handed back to his family. Doctors were not allowed to examine Edward's body and the exact cause of death was never determined. Odai Hussein, 31, was shot by several gunmen firing assault rifles in Baghdad and hospitalized with serious wounds. Majid, Saddam's cousin, escaped the ambush unharmed, yet several of his bodyguards were killed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -SADDAM SURVIVES POORLY-PLANNED COUP ATTEMPT-(RU) Led by Wafiq Samaraii, who headed Iraqi intelligence during the Gulf War but later lost his post, a coup was to be carried out by major sections of the Iraqi military, with simultaneous attacks mounted in both northern and southern Iraq. It failed in the early hours of operation. The coup would have united Iraq's main opposition group with army contingents and Kurd and Shiite forces throughout the nation. Instead, during the attempt over the past weekend, key Kurdish forces declined to attack. Samaraii was able to flee across the border into Syria. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -VATICAN SUPPORTS REMOVAL OF SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAQ-(AP) Iraq won the support of the Vatican in its campaign against the economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations. The backing came only three days after the United Nation Security Council again renewed the sanctions imposed on Iraq after its invasion of Kuwait in 1990. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Perry asks Iraq to release Americans-(AP) Less than 48 hours before the Turkish occupation of northern Iraq, U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry, visiting Kuwaiti officials, released photos of Iraq's re-newed build up of its troops. As many as 141 others were wounded.

The bomb contained an estimated 220 to 330 pounds of TNT, said Hoshyar Zebari,

London-based spokesman for the Kurdistan Democratic Party. He told the AP that he suspected the rival Patriotic Union of Kurdistan was responsible. The two Kurdish parties agreed to share power when they obtained equal votes in parliamentary elections in 1992. However, they started fighting last May and several thousand people have been reported killed. In the same elections Assyrians were able to obtain five parliamentary seats. No information pertaining to the identity of the dead was obtained. Residents of Zakho are mainly Assyrian, Kurdish and Turkoman.-ZHIRINOVSKY CALLS ARABS TO JOIN M-E CHRISTIANS AGAINST THE WEST-Baghdad (RU) Russian ultra-nationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky said on February 26 that he wants Saddam Hussein to join in forging a coalition against the West. After meeting with the Iraqi leader in Baghdad, Zhirinovsky appealed to Moslems and Arabs to join with the Orthodox Christians in a coalition against the West. He accused Turkey for everyday bombardment of ethnic Kurds in southeastern Turkey. Zhirinovsky's Liberal Democratic Party took a quarter of the votes in the last Russian parliamentary election. - SEEKING SYRIAC PROOF-READERS -Toronto (ZN) George Kiraz of the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) is asking for the voluntary cooperation of individuals able to proof-read Syriac text.
