Creative Task

Thursday 24th April

Imagine we were going to have all our lessons online in a virtual school.

Can you design a new school uniform for all the kids to wear? Does it need to be as smart if we are sitting at home to learn? Would you still want it to be a shirt and jumper, but in different colours? Or would it be more casual. What can you come up with? Be creative!

E-mail us with your designs with labels.

Topic

Sign Language

Many people in Britain, and across the world, use sign language to communicate for various reasons. This can be because they are born deaf or hard of hearing or because they have a disability that makes it difficult for them to communicate verbally (with words). Sign language is a way of talking that uses hand movements, head movements and the use of space around you.

In the UK, 15,000 people use sign language as their main form of language. But, up to 151,000 people use British Sign Language to communicate.

Most adults can’t understand British Sign Language.

How great would it be if we could communicate through sign language? If we could support people who rely on sign language? Even if we learnt just a few signs, we would be able to communicate better and make those people who need sign language feel more included and respected.

Your challenge this week is to learn a few simple signs in British Sign Language.

Challenge 1:

Learn to say your name

Page 7: astreabyronwood.org€¦ · Web viewRemember that you should say the word you are signing and that facial expressions are very important in BSL. Challenge 5: Put it all together I

To spell your name, you should use finger spelling. If you are left-handed use the bottom picture of signs. If you are right-handed, use the top picture.

Take each letter of your name. For example, if you are called Beth.

Find the sign for each letter and practise it. Then sign the first letter, then the second ect.

There you go! You’ve learnt to sign your name.

I made a video of me signing my name- I can’t put it on here though. If you email me your name signed, I’ll email mine back! [email protected]

Challenge 2: Learn to say Hello and introduce yourself.

The link above will show you how to say hello and introduce yourself.

If you want to try a different greeting, try one from above. How about saying one of these instead of Hello?

Challenge 3: Learn to say How are you

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6U6FAPJw8k

Follow the link for a tutorial on how to ask how someone is.

Practise with a sibling or parent. Can you now introduce yourself and ask how someone is? Try it!

Challenge 4: Manners!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXSUla-dhQE

Practise these signs, these are simple, but manners are one of the most important things to learn in any language. Remember that you should say the word you are signing and that facial expressions are very important in BSL.

Challenge 5: Put it all together

I want you to film you signing an entire conversation.

Hello, my name is (Finger Spell your name)

How are you?

I’m good, thank you.

Good bye!

If you have time, do some research and see if you can add any other signs in. Remember if you are looking online to put ‘BSL’ as there are different versions of sign language in different countries.

How fantastic is it to be able to communicate in sign?! If we could all speak in sign language, the world would be a much better and far more inclusive place.
