Maths TopicMon

27/04We are going to start this week by reading the story of Supertato! Here is a youtube link if you don’t have the

book at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1nlJBkWGLo

Once you have read the story, I would like you to do some maths using the fruit & vegetables that you have in your house. Place these on a tray & have a go at writing number sentences. E.g. 3 carrots and 1 banana.. 3 + 1 = 4.

Remember to talk about what each part of your number sentence represents, e.g. You have wrote 3 because there are 3 carrots.

Use today’s topic time to create your own supertato! If you have some potato’s in your cupboards, then this is perfect. IF not, what else could you use? You could make a sock puppet potato, or use some junk modelling, or you could draw/paint your Supertato!

I would then like you to write a list of words that describe your Supertato. E.g. round, brown, 2 eyes. Make sure you have a go at writing these words independently using your phonics skills

Tue28/04

The Evil Pea says he is the best teacher! He has spread lots of maths facts around the

Draw a picture of yourself as a superhero! Think about what your superhero powers might be.

supermarket but they are not all correct. Can you be like Supertato and find the right ones to teach the veggies the correct maths? Facts are on this link (Slide 4 & 5): https://wrm-13b48.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/homelearning/early-years/Day-2-Supertato.pdf

How could you help the veggies? How would you protect your family if an evil pea came to yours house?

Make a list of your superpowers. Some of you may be able to write ‘because’ and explain why you have chosen this!

Wed29/04

Today, the veggies from Supertato are having a sports day to keep fit. Set up your own veggie race. Discover which veggies roll the best! Record who comes 1st, 2nd 3rd. Talk about the shape of the veggies & why you think they roll the best! Why not use your time outside to have some races of your own. You could make medals for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place. Set yourself some other challenges. How many jumps on 2 feet can you do in a minute? Get a grown up to set their phone timer. How many on 1 foot? How many spins can you do? Can you run on the spot for one minute?

Today, I would like you design a menu for a brand new restaurant opening in Widnes! This restaurant only serves healthy food.. So think carefully about what food will be on the menu

1. Draw pictures of the food2. Label them using your

phonics3. Could you write a meal by

combining these foods?

Thu 30/04

Time for some potato printing! Use different colours to make patterns! Grown-ups please help your child to cut potatoes in half. If you can, use potatoes of different sizes so you can talk about large and small designs. Get printing, talking about position, printing in groups, use of colour, shape and how much space between your prints.

Today, I would like you to make a healthy snack (You could choose one from the menu you created yesterday). Perhaps, a fruit smoothie, fruit kebab, or vegetable face?

Once you have created your snack, I would like you to write instructions on how to make it – remember, use

your phonics!Share your instructions with me, as I might have a go at

making it myself yum yum!

Fri Today you are creating your own supermarket! Use Today, I challenge you to find out the names for different

23/05 vegtables, fruit & all any other tasty foods to create some supermarket shelves! You need to create some price labels to go on your shelves, e.g. carrots 4p (Keep these prices under 10 initially)

Ask your grown up to come to your shop & buy an item. How many pennies will they need to pay? Could they use any different coins to pay, like 2p or 5p? How much would it cost if they bought 2 items? Record some number sentences to help your grown up workout how much they need to pay altoger.

fruit and vegetables in other languages! How exciting. Draw each countries flag & then write a list of fruit &

vegtables in their language.

I AM NOT EXPECTING THESE WORDS TO BE SPELT CORRECTLY! This is about:

- Developing your phonics by writing the sounds you hear - Talking about different countries & flags

- Using things in your household to research

Mon4/05

Lets start this week with a song! 5 (or 10) Little monkeys jumping on the bed. Like we did for the fish 2 weeks ago, Draw 5 or 10 monkeys and then cut them out. Count them on to a piece of blue paper, or you could even make a bed. If some monkeys fall off, how many are left? Move the pictures to help you & record some number sentences.

The monkeys in today’s focus rhyme are fictional. Talk with your grown ups about what this word means. Sort through your books at home and see if you have both fiction & non-fiction. Can you research monkeys? Use books & the internet to research. You may be able to create a fact file. Think about what the way they look, where they live, what they eat & things they do. Use your phonics to sound out any words you want to note down. Research is great for new learning & you can discover all kinds of interesting facts!

Tue5/05

Today, we are going to return to maths game that we have already played, using numerals 1-6. Remember last time, I suggested writing the numerals out or putting them on something that interests your child, e.g. cars, dolls

It’s time to use that dice again (Remember if you search dice on YouTube one will come up.) Take turns to roll the dice & record which number you have rolled by placing an object on the number, e.g dried cereal, a stone, a small ball of paper? E.g. I’ve rolled 5, I am going to put a cheerio next to 5, your turn... Try timing the game for 1 minute each time, which number was rolled the most/least? How do they know this the most/least? How many more times would we need to roll a 4 for it have been rolled the same amount of times as 6?

Today is story map time again. Remember, you choose the story you map out So many to choose from!

Think about the words ‘beginning, next, then, in the end.’ Be sure to send pictures of them & I will try to guess which story you can have mapped!

Can you guess the one in the picture?

Wed06/05

I think it’s time for a new number of the week! Can you guess what it is? It is one more than 17 & one less than 19? 18!Watch this fun video from Sesame Street:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n50OW6b7Go

Spend today maths session exploring different representations of number 18. E.g. numeral, word, 18 on a tally chart, 18 in tens frames, 18 objects, etc…

It would be really good if you could take a photograph of something that shows 18, e.g. 18 daisies on the grass?

Let’s use Pobble again today (Link below) 😊 As stated last time this resource was suggested in your pack, this website displays a different picture each day (You can also go back & view older pictures).

We will use this as a writing stimulus again today. Choose a picture, discuss it with your family. Can you describe it? What do you think is happening? Now, either write some words to do with the picture, or write me some sentences/story of what you think is happening

Thur07/05

Today, let’s explore tens and ones. How many tens in 18? How many ones in 18? (Remember this also helps us to find out if a number is even or odd!) Explore other numbers too, how many tens/ones in 12, 14, 19, 20?

18Click this link & play the basket ball game

which explores tens & ones: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/place-value-basketball (Select numbers up to 19)

Remember we don’t need to count the ones in a block of ten in ones. We know its 10 and can put 10 straight in our heads, then count on the ones – e.g. 10! 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18

Today we are playing word bingo!

1. Draw out a grid on some paper, perhaps 6, 9 or 12 squares – up to you!

2. Fill each space in the grid with either- a sound- a CVC word, e.g. cat, dog, hat, chip- a high frequency/tricky word, e.g the, I, go

3. Choose someone in your family to be a bingo caller! Your child could also have a go at calling some sounds/words if you give them a list.

4. Mark off the sounds/words as you hear them.. Remember to shout BINGO whem you tick off all your board!!

Share your boards on Twitter as this may help other people in your class with ideas for their board!

Fri08/05

Today I want you develop your understanding of halves & doubles. Its fun Friday… so I am suggesting that you be as imaginative & creative with this task as possible!

Below are some ideas,

I’m sure you enjoyed playing yesterday’s game with words, so let me introduce you to another famtastic word game:‘Creative Connections.’

Give your child a word as ask them to write/say down as many words as they can think of associated with it (it’s a bit like word association).

Perhaps time your child – giving them 2 minutes for every word you give them. (See who can get the most

but use your own ideas too and share them on twitter to inspire the other children & families in our class

words in 2 minutes) Getting your child used to generating words & ideas rapidly is a fundamental creative writing skill.

If your child finds this game difficult, then provide a focus such as a picture, photo, object
