Home Reading
We will be sending home reading books after the Phonics and Reading Parents Information session. Please try and attend this as lots of useful
information will be provided.
English
In English we will be doing lots of work on settling into school and rhymes. We will be learning some new rhymes and tuning our hearing into different sounds because this will help us to read and write. In week 4 we will be learning the first sounds of the Read Write Inc phonics programme, learning how to say the sound correctly, write it and spot it in words and around our environment. We will be learning how to handle a book, turn the pages and learning the difference between letters, words and sentences.
Maths
We will be exploring number in great depth, focussing on one number at a time. We will find out so much about a number that we will be able to solve problems with it. Maths is about talking and explaining our thinking so we will be doing lots of talking about number. You can help at home by counting or spotting numbers when you’re out and about asking questions like “what is one more than 5?”, “what is one less than 7?”.
Topic
Our topic this half term is ‘Who are we?”.Throughout the half term we will be discussing starting school and the rules and expectations that we have in our classroom and around our school. We will also get to know one another better by discussing our immediate and extended family. The aim is to develop the children’s sense of self, their confidence and speaking and listening skills. Our main aim is that the children settle well this half term, it takes some children longer than others and this is completely normal.
