Directions: There are pictures below. You will have to look at the picture of each weld below. You will label it with the correct problem. These are the bold words below. You will use them each once. There are definitions to help. After you label them, you will need to figure out the cause of each weld and how to correct the problem. Was it the settings on the machine or your technique? Use the internet and your problem solving skills to answer the questions. Some questions have more than one picture for angles To recap: 1. Use a bold word to match the picture 2. What caused the weld to look like that? 3. What changes on the machine or your technique do you need to do to fix the problem? Here are the list of words to match with each picture: Insufficient Reinforcement- when weld metal lacks sufficient build-up above base metal Lack of Fusion-Failure of welding process to fuse or joint together layers of weld metal, or weld metal to base metal Slag Inclusions-when foreign material is trapped in weld metal at continuous or randomly spaced intervals, most common is slag Concavity-when distance from weld face is perpendicular to a line joining the weld toe curves inward toward the weld joint Undercut-an indentation or channel melted into the base metal adjacent to the toe or root of a weld and left unfilled by weld metal Inconsistency-Weld bead is not constant and varies throughout the weld, leading to different filler metal thickness, penetration depths, and fusion issues Arc Strike-accidental striking of an arc outside the welding zone, can lead to cracking of weakness Quality Weld- a weld with no visual defects Excessive Reinforcement-when the weld metal has too much build-up above the base metal Overlap-protrusion or overhang of weld metal beyond the bond at the toe or root of the weld without fusing to the base metal Convexity-maximum distance from weld face perpendicular to a line joining weld toes. It has a rounded profile

Some questions have more than one picture for anglesTo recap: 1. Use a bold word to match the picture

2. What caused the weld to look like that? 3. What changes on the machine or your technique do you need to do to fix the

problem?

Here are the list of words to match with each picture:Insufficient Reinforcement- when weld metal lacks sufficient build-up above base metalLack of Fusion-Failure of welding process to fuse or joint together layers of weld metal, or weld metal to base metalSlag Inclusions-when foreign material is trapped in weld metal at continuous or randomly spaced intervals, most common is slagConcavity-when distance from weld face is perpendicular to a line joining the weld toe curves inward toward the weld jointUndercut-an indentation or channel melted into the base metal adjacent to the toe or root of a weld and left unfilled by weld metalInconsistency-Weld bead is not constant and varies throughout the weld, leading to different filler metal thickness, penetration depths, and fusion issuesArc Strike-accidental striking of an arc outside the welding zone, can lead to cracking of weaknessQuality Weld- a weld with no visual defectsExcessive Reinforcement-when the weld metal has too much build-up above the base metalOverlap-protrusion or overhang of weld metal beyond the bond at the toe or root of the weld without fusing to the base metalConvexity-maximum distance from weld face perpendicular to a line joining weld toes. It has a rounded profileSplatter-Metal particles expelled during arc welding that do not form part of the weldPorosity- presence of inclusions or gas pockets in a weld
