A message from the Worthy Grand Matron and the Worthy Grand Patron..........It is with pleasure we bring you greetings from the Grand Chapter of Saskatchewan!

First, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to Sisters Rose Whaley and Marianne Woods for accepting our invitation to co-chair this wonderful endeavour and for creating and publishing our very first edition of “The Star Gazer”. A Saskatchewan OES Newsletter has been an inspiration of mine for some time and both Bruce and I are so pleased and proud it has become a reality. We trust you will all enjoy the news and share it with members who do not have access to a computer. You may wish to save the Newsletter as it will contain some valuable information. We are excited about this new communication tool and congratulate our editors for their efforts.

After an enjoyable and busy “A Royal Garden Party” Session of our Grand Chapter, we were installed in a very impressive ceremony on Saturday, April 26, under the direction of our Installing Grand Officer, Sister Thea Howe, Past Grand Matron, and her assistants. We were very pleased to have our Most Worthy Grand Patron, Brother John Grobler and his wife, Sister Barbara, stay for our Installation Ceremony. We congratulate Sister Donna Sanders and Brother Rod Stafford on their successful and interesting year.

Our year “Shining Stars - Guided By The Light” began with our Official Visit to Queen Alexandra Chapter #84, Kindersley on May 5th. Prior to the meeting we enjoyed visiting a brother in Heritage Manor Care Centre and a sister who was hospitalized at the time. The visits were followed by a delicious ham dinner with the members and visitors. Queen Alexandra Chapter Members were

pleased to have a good turnout of members from our jurisdiction, as well as several members from Serenity Chapter #113, Oyen, Alberta at their Official Visit. The Chapter was proud to initiate a new Brother to our Order. All present were happy to witness the Initiation Ceremony.

We were pleased to be invited to participate in the 100th Birthday Celebration of Saskatoon Chapter #4 on May 10th. This was a very enjoyable afternoon and much planning and preparation was evident by all the “history” displayed on posters around the banquet room. We wish Saskatoon Chapter #4 many more years of fellowship and service to their community.

The Official Visit to Excelsior Chapter #21, Regina, was on May 12th. This was another great meeting with lots of visiting and chatter. Another delicious dinner was enjoyed by all. Sister Barbara Webb, General Grand Chapter Committee Member on Membership, Worthy Matron graciously welcomed the visitors. The Obligation was repeated and the ballot was exemplified by the officers and two members from each side.

We attended the Grand Chapter of Virginia in Roanoke and were accompanied by three other members from Saskatchewan. Sister Bobbi White, Most Worthy Grand Matron and Brother John Grobler, Most Worthy Grand Patron and his wife, Sister Barbara were present at the “Forget Not Our Obligation” Session. Sister Barbara Benton, Past Most Worthy Grand Matron favoured the assembly with her rendition of signing “The Lord's Prayer” at the informal opening. Brother Fido Stephens, Grand Chaplain and his wife, Betty Lou extended true Virginia hospitality and ensured our enjoyment of their session.

We then traveled to Winnipeg for the “Canada - Manitoba” Grand Chapter of Manitoba Session. We were pleased to have great representation of

Saskatchewan members attend. Brother Fred Chernoff, Grand Representative of Saskatchewan in Manitoba and his wife, Sister Natalie provided a very interesting tour of the Manitoba OES Chalet, Legislative Building and many other points of interest. We had a very enjoyable time at both Grand Chapters and met many new and interesting members from numerous Grand Jurisdictions. We are looking forward to attending Grand Chapter in Alberta and Official Visits at Unity, Lloydminster, North Battleford and Biggar beginning June 4.

We extend our appreciation to members of our Grand Family for their support and attendance at the Official Visits we have completed. It is great to see you enjoy traveling and meeting new members. Our project this year is Ronald McDonald House, Saskatoon. The two pins we have selected as fundraisers for this worthy cause are selling so well, we have already placed a second order from our supplier! One pin is a cute bright orange replica of Ronald McDonald's boot, complete with laces, and sells for $6.00; the other is a simple generic “SASKATCHEWAN” wheat pin which sells for $10.00. Contact any Grand Officer or our Project Chairperson, Sister May Barr, to purchase these pins. Ronald McDonald House and the families who need help appreciate your support!

We have some exciting times coming up – The “Shining Stars Picnic” in Moose Jaw; the Tea in Meota; Peace Garden Pilgrimage; Bus Trip to Missouri Grand Chapter and Branson along with more Official Visits and our joint Homecoming. Please plan on joining us at some or all of these events and help us celebrate our ties. Our itinerary and information is posted on the Grand Chapter Website (www.saskoes.weebly.com) Be sure to check out the photos of our Grand Family!

We are continuing to save postage stamps to be sold to stamp collectors with proceeds being

donated to Cancer. Sister Lynann Pethick has sent information to each Subordinate Chapter outlining the guidelines for trimming the stamp from the envelope. Please check with your Chapter Secretary, or if you are uncertain of the requirements save the entire front of the envelope. Also, remember to collect pop can tabs. Our Grand Officers will be pleased to receive the stamps and/or tabs from cans at Official Visits or any other event during the year.

It is our honour and privilege to represent the members of the Order of the Eastern Star in Saskatchewan. It is our wish that you all enjoy summer and we look forward to visiting with you as we travel to all the Chapters in our great province.

Our Obligation

“Are we unmindful of the vows we take?

Do we forget the promises we make?

When we assume the obligation of the Star,

The pledge is binding wheresoe'er we are,

About its work a silence we must keep,

Nor to another of its secrets speak;

I'll not betray the trust that's placed in me,

If I a worthy Eastern Star would be.

Remembering Him who walked in Galilee,

And to His chosen ones said, ‘Follow me.'

Where sorrow, sin and suffering were seen,

There walked the meek and lowly Nazarene.

No time had He for petty fault to find,

His life of love was spent in being kind.

Help us, dear Lord, by faith to walk with Thee,

That we true followers of the Star may be.

The Chapter has a half dozen recycled Past Matron jewels and one Past Patron jewel, which we would be pleased to give to any Chapter for their use. These are of the older design, much more elaborate and of heavier construction than the new ones. SASKATOON CHAPTER #4100TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

1914- 2014The 100th Anniversary celebration of Saskatoon Chapter #4, Saskatoon was held on May 10th, 2014 in the Saskatoon Masonic Temple, Saskatoon.

Left-Right: Brother Bruce Lambert, WGP, Sister Wilma McKee, WGM, Sister Marie Casavant, PGM and

Brother Robert Brown, WP

Saskatoon Chapter #4 was constituted on March 4, 1914 under the General Grand Chapter with Sister Kathryn Padley as the first Worthy Matron, and Brother Edward Channell as the first Worthy Patron and Sister Mary McFadyen as Associate Matron with 35 Charter members. On May 16, 1916 the Charter was re-issued under the newly-formed Grand Chapter of Saskatchewan by Sister Flora Trick, Worthy Grand Matron and Brother Norman J. Bellamy, Worthy Grand Patron.

A number of Chapter #4 members formed a second Saskatoon Chapter known as Regal Chapter #132 on May 11, which was constituted on February 8, 1954. On November 5, 1984 Humboldt Chapter #5 amalgamated with Saskatoon #4.

It was heartwarming to learn of the various activities, charities supported and fund raising in which the Chapter participated over the years.Through the years there have been a number of Grand Officers, District Deputy Grand Matrons, Worthy Grand Matrons and Worthy Grand Patrons who have brought pride and honour to themselves and the Chapter by serving at the Grand Chapter level. During the recounting of our history, we were also pleased to recognize some General Grand Chapter Officers from our midst, as well as General Grand Chapter Committee Members.

Our celebration was greatly enhanced by a most delicious banquet prepared and served by members of our sister Chapter Regal #132. We wish to express a heartfelt thank you to all for an admirable job well done!

Thanks to multi-talented Brother Jack Smith, PGP for his handiwork in the design and decoration of the Anniversary Cake.

Entertainment consisted of a musical program by “The Sweet Adelines”, a barbershop ladies quartet, followed by a delightful visit from our own Saskatchewan “royalty” – Queen Elizabeth “the twoth” - impersonated by Sister Donna Sanders, Junior Past Grand Matron of Saskatchewan. Sister Donna's performances have become somewhat renowned in parts of Canada, at Grand Chapter sessions in the United States, and also at General Grand Chapter Assemblies. Kudos to Sister Bev and Brother Charles Andres for the vast amount of research they undertook to summarize the activities of the Chapter. The important highlights of the years were divided into decades and mounted on the walls for all to read and to peruse the pictures. Members and many visitors enjoyed a wonderful nostalgic time of reminiscing and “remembering when”....

Although our Chapter membership has declined - from several hundred to less than one hundred, with about thirty active members at present - we have retained “the Eastern Star Heart” which will help to carry us on into another century.

It has been a great 100 years!

SASKATOON CHAPTER #4 INITIATION

The Initiation Ceremony is a very special time for a Chapter. In some Chapters this ceremony is a common occurrence and how fortunate for them! However, with the two Chapters in Saskatoon acquiring new members it is somewhat of a challenge. Rural-based Chapters seem to be more successful in meeting this challenge.Having said that, recently it was an honour to confer the degrees on Sister Shelley Gustafson. Our Conductress, being a novice in her position, did a commendable job of making the new sister feel relaxed and comfortable as she listened intently to the lectures and secret work. One of the many wonderful pluses of being a member of the Order is that we may work together and assist one another as needed, which was the case at this meeting when Brother Gerry Heskett, Past Patron of Regal Chapter #132 willingly served in the office of the Associate Patron. Also, the new member's great uncle, Brother Keith Bird, PGP of Saskatchewan and a member of Golden West Chapter #38, Lanigan, assisted with one of the Worthy Patron’s lectures. It gave us a happy feeling to see the surprised look on our new Sister’s face when Brother Keith performed part of the Worthy Patron lecture in the East. No doubt, having her great uncle Brother Keith and great aunt, Sister Mary Bird, Past Matron present at her initiation will always remain as a happy and lasting memory for her!

Did you know that Sister Marianne Woods (PM of Regina Chapter #7 on five occasions) wears many hats? One of the most noteable is when she is on stage. Last evening, in the final performance (of 4) she '”simply shone” in the Regina Little Theatre play “You Can't Get There From Here”! Her next 'act' will be in Regina Summer Stage's performance of Stephen Sondheim's “Into the Woods” playing July 10-13 at the Regina Performing Arts Centre.

Some thoughts from the Editors:

It is still officially Spring – although some days may not feel so much like that! Henry Wordsworth Longfellow wrote: “If spring came but once in a century, instead of once a year, or burst forth with the sound of an earthquake, and not in silence, what wonder and expectation there would be in all hearts to behold the miraculous change.” May you and those near and dear to you experience the wonder and beauty of the gifts of nature through these yearned-for days of spring and summer. And Lord, as we travel, keep us safe. Let us be good drivers and passengers.
