Well here we are, June already, it doesn’t seem all that long ago we were saying happy new- year, is that just an age thing. They say we are only as old as our mind. I think that is one thing we are blessed with by being in Probus and that is by being able to participate in as much (or little) as we like but just by being active re-invigorates us. I know we all have aches and pains, and yes sometimes it is hard to get out of bed, but when we get together with friends, that smile appears from nowhere and guess what, for the ensuing period we feel that age is a word only.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE –Firstly thank-you to all of you for your kind thoughts and well wishes on my recovery. I, as well as my newborn ankle are progressing well, the paediatrics department has given the thumbs up.

I realise that our very skilled newsletter editor Jan has written an article on Ken and Marj Freeman and their wonderful award, but on behalf of the committee and membership I would like to say congratulations and so well deserved for two “icons” of our community. Whilst they are both humble individuals, I would like to add that I can’t remember, at least in recent history, of a husband and wife both getting nominations, as was the case when they were both named Citizens of the year in 2007. So welcome to June 2018 Ken Freeman OAM and Marj Freeman OAM, we salute the recognition.

Finally, I know it is winter and we were blessed with a warm start, but it is now becoming colder and will continue to be for a couple of months at least so rug up, we want to see all your smiling faces. /Mel Gray

RECOGNITION FOR YEARS OF SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY - KEN AND MARJ FREEMAN 0AM

Ken and Marj Freeman have jointly been presented with the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) at this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours, in recognition of their decades of service to the Blacktown Community. Our congratulation to you both, what an achievement, you must be so proud; we are so proud of you.

On Monday 11th in their coverage of the Queen’s Birthday Honours, Channel 10 had a marvellous segment on Ken & Marj and their volunteering and community service over many decades. It can still be seen on their webpage if you want to see it: https://tenplay.com.au/sydney/2018/6/sydney-news-11-jun-2018

The Blacktown Advocate last week also had them featured on the front page with a lovely photo, copy of this paper has been left on the Book Table for all to see.

Twelve months ago we rebooked Roland Storm as he was a great hit at our August meeting. He has contacted Mel and has verified that he will be entertaining us again at this August’s meeting. To give justification to his presentation it’s imperative that we give him the full hour. /Janette Gray

EATING IN THE FIFTIES (How times change)PASTA had not been invented. It was macaroni or spaghetti.Curry was a surname.A take-away was a mathematical problem.PIZZA Sounds like a leaning tower somewhere. All chips were plain.Oil was for lubrication. Fat was for cookingTea was made in a teapot using tea leaves and never green.Cubed sugar was regarded as posh.Fish didn’t have fingers in those days.None of us had ever heard of yogurt.Healthy food consisted of anything edible.Cooking outside was called camping.

Seaweed was not a recognised food.‘Kebab’ was not even a word, never mind a food.Sugar enjoyed a good press & was regarded as white gold.Prunes were medicinal.Surprisingly, muesli was readily available. It was called cattle feed.Pineapples came in a tin; we had only ever seen a picture of a real one.Water came out of a tap. If someone had suggested bottling it and charging more than gasoline for it, they would have become a laughing stock. The things we never had on/at our tables … elbows, hat and mobile phones.
