The purpose of today’s Day of Remembrance is to provide all Good Grief families the opportunity to come together as a community, to mourn and to remember. Though for some of you, every minute, hour and day is full of memories and feel-ings, our hope is that today provides a special time to do so with your Good Grief family.

If you have any thoughts or feedback about today’s gathering we invite you to share them with us. Thank you for being with us throughout the year, and on this day in particular.

Good Grief Staff, Board and Volunteers

Today’s GaTherinG

We are grateful for the many volunteers who facilitate Good Grief peer support groups throughout the year. Their contribution is invaluable.

Our sincere thanks to the many people who helped us coordinate this event, those who donated their goods and services, and those who have been a part of today’s gathering, especially:

Good Grief’s mission is to normalize grief in our community through education, advocacy, and year-round support group programs for grieving children, teens and adults.

Good Grief is Northern New Jersey’s premier resource for grieving children and their families. Since opening its peer support program in 2007, Good Grief has grown over 300%, becoming the fastest growing children’s grieving center in the country. Good Grief serves over 75 communities throughout New Jersey in its state-of-the-art facility in Morristown.

Through the assistance of experienced and committed volunteer facilitators, Good Grief conducts peer support programs for children from 3-18 and young adults 18-30 who experience the death of a parent or sibling. Good Grief is also a resource for schools, businesses, and other community organizations with its Conversations on Grief™ workshops. Both as a direct service and education provider, Good Grief works to transform communities so that no child ever needs to grieve alone.

Reading: Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

over the prairies and the deep trees,

the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting-

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.

Commemorative ActivityWe invite each person to remember the special person who has died and to make a commitment to self renewal through these two symbolic activities.

For Remembrance—An Origami GeeseFrom the geese we learn the importance of teamwork, community, and encour-agement. Those who have died are forever a part of this community. Remember him/her by making an origami geese in their honor. First, write a message of remembrance on the paper, then follow the directions for folding it. These geese will be prominently hung in the main house of Good Grief.

For Renewal—A Ribbon of RenewalFrom the geese we learn that it’s important to keep up with the flock, or to form a new flock. We encourage each person to make a commitment to take care of themselves in order to keep moving forward and to be able to support the other people in their lives. Select a fabric, and write on the white piece a promise for how you will take care of yourself – for example, take a walk every day; join a yoga class; do a good deed. These ribbons of renewal will be displayed in the tree on the front lawn of Good Grief as a reminder of your commitment to take care of yourself.

Closing Remarks Mary Fleck, Director of Family Services

You came to visit at your own leisure, but it was always

great to see you. Although we didn't like going to your house very much, we still went just to be with you.

You saw our costumes we make ourselves every year. Sometimes you couldn't even

recognize us, we looked so good. This year we were gothic and gangster.

You went to our church with us on Easter Sunday, the last

Sunday we ever spent together.

We love you Dad, but we miss you too much!

Love, Madison, Brandon & Karen! <3

Zoë Gina JacksonFebruary 22, 2010 - April 9, 2011

Zoe was such a special baby. She was loved by everyone. Zoe and her brother Ameer had such a close and loving relationship even though they were eight years apart. She had a special bond with all of us. Zoe

passed away from complications from being hit by a car. Before we left her with her aunt, Zoe kept coming back and forth to our car and playing with her brother. I believe that was her way of telling us good-bye. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t miss her smile or her

hugs or her not so subtle way of busting into the bathroom, shower or wherever I was that I tried to go without her.

Zoe, we love you and miss you so much.

XOXO my Gigi….. until we are together again.

John we miss your infectious laughYou were taken too early – led down a different path.

Our children are growing, doing amazing things. With the skill and knowledge a Dad only brings.

We’ve laughed and cried remembering youAnd often I’ve thought what will I do.

Then I realize your watching from aboveThe music, sports, and our children you so love.

As our angel in Heaven we believe in youAnd will reunite again when it’s our time too.

We love and miss you forever and always.Sally, Robbie, Willie, and Helena
