A MESSAGE FROM

GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY

Dear Friends:

Welcome to the 68th Annual Convention, hosted by the Maryland

Catholic War Veterans and their Auxiliary. On behalf of the citizens of Maryland, I would like to thank you for your service and dedication to our nation. You are there for our State and Country in times of need and we are committed to now serving you. As you come together for your convention, I encourage you to pursue federal and state programs available to you and your family.

The O’Malley-Brown Administration is committed to ensuring that the needs of our servicemen and women are met. Most recently, the Veteran’s Full Employment Act of 2013 has created a program through which veterans and eligible military spouses can now apply for expedited processing of certain occupational and professional licenses in Maryland. The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation also serves our veterans through the Maryland Workforce Exchange and One Stop Career Centers throughout the State.

Thank you for your continued commitment to the great state of Maryland and the United States. On behalf of all, Marylanders, best wishes for a successful convention and thank you for your service. Best wishes for a memorable event. Sincerely,

Remembering — POW’s and MIA’s As you join us this evening, you may

have noticed a small table here in a place of honor near our head table. It is set for one. This table is our way of symbolizing the fact that members of our pro-fession of arms are missing from our midst. They are called P.O.W./M.I.A., we call them "Brothers". They are unable to be with us and so we remember them. This TABLE set for one is small - symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against their oppressors. The TABLECLOTH is white - symbolizing the purity of their intentions to respond to their country's call to arms. The single ROSE dis-played in a vase reminds us of the families and loved ones of our comrades-in-arms who keep the faith awaiting their return. The RED RIBBON tied so promi-nently on the vase is reminiscent of the red ribbon worn on the lapel and breasts of thousands who bear witness to their unyielding determination to demand a proper accounting of our missing. A SLICE OF LEMON is on the bread plate to remind us of their bitter fate. There is SALT upon the bread plate - symbolic of the families' tears as they wait. The GLASS is inverted - they can not toast with us this night. The CHAIR - the chair is empty - they are not here. REMEMBER! REMEMBER - all of you who served with them and called them comrades, who depended upon their might and aid, and relied upon them, for surely, they have not forsaken you.

Welcome to Ocean City, Maryland On behalf of the City Council and the citizens, welcome to Ocean City, Maryland for the 68

th Annual Maryland Catholic War Veterans

Convention. We are deeply grateful for the service you have given this national and we welcome you to enjoy all that Ocean City offers during your stay. Last year, our beautiful beach ranked in the top five cleanest beached in the country and our world-famous Boardwalk topped several lists of favorites for its free entertainment and “classic vibe.” Our quaint barrier island, which was once a sleepy fishing village, now stretches along 10 miles of beautiful beach from the Inlet to the Delaware state line. We are very happy to be your host again this year and we warmly welcome you to Ocean City.

Our dead are not Unknown Soldiers. We know who they are and wither they seek to go. We know that they must languish in Purgatory until the last earthly stain is wiped away and until the last earthly injustice is repaired. We also know that we can speed their passage from a Pur-gatory of shadow and pain to a Paradise of happiness & light. We can hasten the dawn of eternal rest and the rays of per-petual light. Our prayers and Masses and works of charity can become eternal ransom money in the justice of God.

We love our dead. Flowers wither upon their graves. A daily garland of prayers is better than an arm full of roses. As we approach the Golden Memorial Hour of the Catholic War Veterans stand for a moment in silence, and let there rise from your heart a prayer beseeching Almighty God, the Father of us all, to grant to the souls of our departed comrades, a peace and glory that is theirs because of the sacri-fices they made that others may live..

Father Emil J. Kapaun, was born in Pilsen, Kansas, in the Diocese of Wichita, Kansas on Holy Thursday, April 20, 1916. He was ordained as a Priest for the Diocese on June 9, 1940, and entered the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps in 1944.

Separated from the service in 1946, he re-entered the Army in 1948 and was sent to Japan the following year. In July of 1950 Father Kapaun was ordered to Korea.

On November 2 of that same year, he was taken as a prisoner of war. In the seven months in prison, Father Kapaun spent himself in heroic service to his fellow prisoners without

regard for race, color or creed. To this, there is testimony of men of all faiths. Ignoring his own ill health, he nursed the sick and wounded until a blood clot in his leg prevented his daily rounds.

Moved to a so-called hospital, but denied medical assistance, his death soon followed on May 23, 1951.

The Diocese of Wichita and the Vatican have begun the formal process that could lead to Father Kapaun's canonization. In 1993, it was

announced that Fr. Kapaun would receive the title of "Servant of God."

A convoy of three ships and three escorting Coast Guard cutters passed through "torpedo alley" some 100 miles off the coast of Greenland at about 1 a.m. on February 3, 1943. The submarine U-223 fired three torpedoes, one of which hit the mid-section of the Dorchester, a U.S. Army troopship with

more than 900 men on board. Ammonia and oil were everywhere in the fast-sinking vessel and upon the freezing sea The four Chaplains on board, two Protestant pastors, a Catholic priest and a Jewish rabbi, were among the first on deck, calming the men and handing out life jackets. When they ran out, they took off their own and placed them on waiting soldiers without regard to faith or race. Approximately 18 minutes from the explosion, the ship went down. They were the last to be seen by witnesses; they were standing arm-in-arm on the hull of the ship, each pray-ing in his own way for the care of the men. Almost 700 died, making it the third largest loss at sea of its kind for the United States during World War II. The Coast Guard Cutter Tampa was able to escort the other freighters to Greenland. Meanwhile the cutters Comanche and Escanaba, disobeying or-ders to continue the search for the German U-Boat, stopped to rescue 230 men from the frigid waters that night. The four Chaplains were Father John Washington (Catholic), Reverend Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed), Rabbi Alexander Goode (Jewish) and Rev. George Fox (Methodist). These four Chaplains were later honored by the Congress and Presidents. They were recognized for their selfless acts of courage, compassion and faith. According to the First Sergeant on the ship, "They were always together, they carried their faith together." They demon-strated throughout the voyage and in their last moments, interfaith compas-sion in their relationship with the men and with each other. In 1960 Congress created a special Congressional Medal of Valor, never to be repeated again, and gave it to the next of kin of the "Immortal Chaplains.

A Message from Dennis H. Smith Director, VA Maryland Health Care System I am honored to join you today for the 68th Annual Catholic War Veterans and Auxiliary Convention. I am also delighted to recognize the outstanding contributions of the Catholic War Veterans and Auxiliary in supporting the needs of hospitalized Veterans throughout the VA Maryland Heal Care System. Thanks to your support and your numerous acts of kindness, our Veteran patients receive quality and compassionate health care each and every day.

Over the past year, 13 volunteers from the Catholic War Veterans and Auxiliary contributed more than 1,540 hours of service to support the needs of Maryland’s Veterans throughout our health care system. Beyond the contributions of volunteer time and service, the VA Maryland Health Care System received a total of $4,746 in monetary and miscellaneous donations from the Catholic War Veterans and Auxiliary during fiscal year 2013. Your generosity helped to benefit many of our Veteran patients throughout the state. Even through it is impossible to calculate the amount of care and compassion provided, I feel it is important to reflect upon these outstanding accomplishments.

I am extremely grateful for your tremendous commitment to our health care system. Whatever your contribution this past year, each and every one of you have supported our mission to, “Honor America’s Veterans as heroes by providing the highest quality healthcare.” It is obvious from the numerous compliments that I receive from our Veteran patients that your selfless acts of kindness are truly cherished and appreciated.

On behalf of our Veteran patients and our dedicated staff and volunteers, I sincerely thank you for your tireless service, and I congratulate you on your outstanding accomplishments.

I wish you the best during your Annual Convention!.

Sincerely,

Dennis H. Smith

James C. Finkel Sr. National Commander CWV National Headquarters 441 N. Lee Street Alexandria, VA 22314 Phone: 703-549-3644 www.cwv.org

On behalf of the National Officers of the Catholic War Veterans I extend our congratulations to the Department of Maryland and their Auxiliary on their 68th

and 63rd conventions respectfully. Your perseverance and dedication to our Holy Church and Veterans are an inspiration to the members of our organiza-tion. The officers on the National Board are striving to improve our communications between the members of our great organization. We have improved our Na-tional web site to make it user friendly. Through the efforts of our web site committee the Chaplains and Commanders letters and the officers’ reports are available for everyone to access for their information. Our programs and forms are also available via the website and through our National store at www.cwv.org, where we are looking to supply American made merchandise. I have been blessed with an excellent staff of officers, elected at our last con-vention. They have their committees working and communicating an exchange of ideas that can only improve the Catholic War Veterans in the future. The committee chairpersons are now required to share their progress with the membership as well as the leadership of our organization so everyone is kept informed. Many members believe we have funds at National. Let me inform you all that we had to cut $48,000 from last year’s budget. It was a difficult undertaking and our National Treasurer spent long days searching to meet last year’s in-come with this year’s budget. In closing, may the Holy Spirit guide you in your deliberations and elections at your convention. Yours in Christ,

James C. Finkel Sr. National Commander Catholic War Veterans of the U.S.A.

Maryland Veterans’ Cemeteries The State of Maryland, through the Cemetery Program of the Maryland Depart-ment of Veterans Affairs, offers Maryland veterans, and their eligible depend-ents, a final resting place at one of five state veterans' cemeteries located throughout Maryland. The Program is the largest of its kind in the nation. A Pre-interment Program is available through which veterans may indicate their desire to be buried in one of the state’s cemeteries and verify their eligibility for such burial on a pre-need basis. The following facilities provide interment ser-vices during the normal business week (Monday through Friday) and are open to the public 365 days of the year. For visitors to our cemeteries the gates will be open every day of the year from 8:00AM until 5:00PM. The gates will close at 4:45PM to allow visitors to exit the cemetery. Dear Department of Maryland Catholic War Veterans and Auxiliary:

It is an honor to be here and extend a warm welcome to Maryland's delegates and members at your 68th annual convention. May the Lord guide you as you work toward a fun filled and successful con-vention.

I comment all the officers and members who have participated in our programs and completed their reports. It is your hard work and dedi-cation that makes the organization thrive. We are always looking for members to move up the echelons, it is not too early to be thinking of becoming part of the National Board!

As you renew friendships and make new ones during your meetings reflect on your accomplishments of the past year and think of way to embellish them for the next year, always remembering our motto, “For God, Country and Home.”

Let us remember all of our military and their families. May God watch over them and keep them protected.

Best wishes for a successful and productive convention and May God Bless you.

May I extend my sincere appreciation and gratitude in welcoming all of CWV membership to our 68th Annual Convention and the Auxiliary’s 63rd Annual con-vention representing the Department Of Maryland here in enchanting Ocean City, MD. You are the greatest!!!

As a group, we faced many challenges for the welfare of our membership that included the computerization of our Post rosters, shrinkage of several MD Posts, the linkage of spirit between members of St. Patrick's and St Casimir Posts and the sadness of comrades lost to our Supreme Commander. Serving as your State Commander for a second term was most gratifying and humbling, as we continued to pursue maintaining our expected high levels of our CWV traditions.

To highlight a few - our Fifth Sunday Masses, the monthly VA bingos, and other festivities at our local Maryland VA rehabilitation centers held true as member participation was strong. Also, we should not forget the energies expended by our many Catholic youth in our CWV contests as these students shared their talents in poster creativity and stimulating essays.

May I warmly express to all – a genuine thank you … your continued coopera-tion was totally exceptional in preserving the spirit of our Catholic War Veter-ans’ objective by our continuance of serving our deserving military veterans through our various planned veteran activities.

Together as One Voice at this year’s annual convention, let’s build our common thread amongst us … nurture our membership, serve God, serve our Country, serve our family and our extended family of those who graciously served in the United States armed forces as members of our Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy and Marines … God bless us all.

May the face of the Lord always shine upon you and the Mother of Jesus, Mary, be everlasting within your body’s spirit.

Always with the guidance of the Lord,

TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER Interesting facts about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Sentinels of the Third United States Infantry Regiment "Old Guard" The Guards of Honor at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier are highly motivated and are proud to honor all American service members who are "Known But to God." Q: How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns and why? A: 21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the highest hon-or given any military or foreign dignitary. Q: How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his return walk and why? A: 21 seconds, for the same reason as answer number 1. Q: Why are his gloves wet? A: His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the rifle. Q: Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time, and if not, why not? A: No, he carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path, he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder. Q: Who guards the tomb? A: The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and in any weather by Tomb Guard sentinels. Sentinels, all volunteers, are considered to be the best of the elite 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), headquartered at Fort Myer, Va. Q: How often are the guards changed? A: The guard is changed every hour on the hour Oct. 1 to March 31 in an elaborate ritual. From April 1 through September 30, another change is add-ed on the half hour and the cemetery closing time moves from 5 to 7 p.m. The Tomb consists of seven pieces of rectangular marble. Carved on the East side (the front of the Tomb, which faces Washington, D.C.) is a compo-site of three figures, commemorative of the spirit of the Allies of World War I. In the center of the panel stands Victory (female). On the right side, a male figure symbolizes Valor. On the left side stands Peace, with her palm branch to reward the devotion and sacrifice that went with courage to make the cause of righteousness triumphant.

The north and south sides are divided into three panels by Doric pilasters. In each panel is an inverted wreath. On the west, or rear, panel (facing the Am-phitheater) is inscribed: HERE RESTS IN HONORED GLORY AN AMERI-CAN SOLDIER KNOWN BUT TO GOD

The first Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was a sub base and a base or plinth. It was slightly smaller than the present base. This was torn away when the present Tomb was started Aug. 27, 1931. The Tomb was completed and the area opened to the public 9:15 a.m. April 9, 1932, without any ceremony. AMERICAN REVOLUTION Women served on the battlefield as nurses, water bearers, cooks, laundresses and saboteurs.

WAR OF 1812 Mary Marshall and Mary Allen nursed aboard Commodore Stephen Decatur’s ship, United States.

CIVIL WAR Women provided casualty and nursing care to Union and Confederate troops at field hospitals and on the Union hospital ship Red Rover. Women soldiers disguised as men served on both sides. In 1866, Dr. Mary Walker received the Congressional Medal of Honor, the first and only women to receive the nation’s highest military honor.

SPANISH AMERICAN WAR More than 1,500 Army contract nurses served stateside, in Hawaii, Cuba, the Philip-pines, Puerto Rico, and on the hospital ship, Relief. 22 nurses died.

WORLD WAR I Navy and Marine Corps enlisted women to free men to fight. Army and Navy nurses served in hospitals stateside and overseas. 233 bilingual telephone operators recruited by AT&T served overseas with the US Army Signal Corps.

WORLD WAR II More than 400,000 women served in non combat jobs in the Women’s Army auxiliary Corps (WAAC) which was converted to Women’s Army Corps (WAC); Navy Women Reserves called Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES); Coast Guard SPARs; the Marine Corps Women Marine Reserves, and the women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP). 87 military women nurses were held as prisoners of war in the Pacific and Europe.

1948 The Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 granted women permanent sta-tus in the Regular and Reserves forces of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and the Air Force.

KOREAN WAR Some 540 women served in-country, as Army and Navy nurses in MASH units, hospi-tals on hospital ships and as Air Force nurses with air evacuation units.

VIETNAM WAR About 7,500 American military women served in Southeast Asia. The majority of those that served in-country were Army nurses. 8 died.

PERSIAN GULF Over 41,000 American military women were deployed on Operation Desert Shield/Storm. 2 Army women were taken prisoner. 13 military women died.

Today Women serve in every deployment of the US military around the Globe. In Iraq, Kuwait, Haiti, Bosnia, Saudi Arabia, at the Serbian/Macedonian border, Afghanistan, Persian Gulf and elsewhere, women are serving America. They are examples to future genera-tions that securing our country's liberty and freedom is everyone's right and responsibil-ity. Women continue to serve...with honor.

It has been an honor and a privilege to have served you as Presi-

dent of the CWV Auxiliary for the Department of Maryland for this

past year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my de-

partment officers and my auxiliary for their support this past year. I

hope for continued success within the department and auxiliary in

the forthcoming year. I would also like to thank the department

commander, Gil Barker.

We very diligently try to increase our membership year after year.

We know that it is always a main concern within the department to

keep the auxiliaries operating. Finally, we must continue to keep

our prayers and support for our veterans, our home, our churches

and America.

Wishing Everyone an enjoyable and successful convention.

Nursing Leadership … an excerpt from the annals’ of Vietnam

Colonel Mildred I. Clark, Chief of the Corps from 1963 to 1967 and Colonel Anna Mae Hays, Chief of the Corps from 1967 to 1971 led the Army Nurse Corps dur-ing the Vietnam war. On 11 June 1970, COL Hays also became a Brigadier General the first woman and the first nurse in American military history to attain general officer rank. The first head-quarters position in Vietnam held by an Army Nurse was that of Nurse Consultant in the office of the Surgeon, United States Army Vietnam (USAV). She was concurrently the Chief Nurse of the 3rd Field Hospital, Saigon. In September of 1965 the Nurse Consultant became a full-time position, and in May, 1966, Headquarters, Department of the Army authorized a Nursing Division in the U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam (USARV) Surgeon’s Of-fice. The Nurse Consultant became the Chief Nurse, USARV as well as Chief Nurse of the newly operational 44th Medical Brigade. In March, 1967 the role of Assistant Chief Nurse, UASARV became operational.

The Maryland CWV membership praises all the nursing corps from the Civil War through all of our other wars, world wars, police actions, and skirmishes with a deep gratitude in our hearts and minds, we salute these gallant women for their service to our great country in time of medical need.

It is our privilege and honor to announce our Maryland Catholic War Veteran of 2014

Lt. Colonel Elizabeth Kruger, US Army (retired) A nurse’s nurse … A true American hero …

God bless her

It is the soldier, not the President who gives US Democracy. It is the soldier, not the Congress who takes Care of US. It is the soldier, not the Reporter who has given us Freedom of Press. It is the soldier, not the Poet who has given us Freedom of Speech. It is the soldier, not the campus [community] Organizer who has given us the Freedom to Demonstrate. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag; who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, that allows the protester to burn the flag. ~ Father Dennis O’Brien, US Marine Corp. good God; with love He will repay me. “

St. Therese, The Little Flower

Almighty GOD; we make our earnest

prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection, that thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States of America at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy and

to demean ourselves with that charity, humility and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of The Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech thee, through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen (George Washington)
