gether to formulate these minutes since Danielle was not present at the November meeting and does
not have the notes taken.

folk, VA on August 5th, 2012.

Proposal for food vendor at SVDA schooling shows welcomed, this will not be in exchange for
volunteer points.
Proposal for Western Dressage classes delivered
Diane Rombs resigned from Ways and Means chairperson February 2012
Officer Reports
1. Vice President: Robyn Nunnally sent report with a nomination for volunteer of the year award, Tristin and
Sandy also made nominations. Robyn also requested members to step forward early and volunteer
for schooling show positions.
Kathy requested the board to submit volunteer of the year award privately to Carol Gonyo via email. Kathy
also asked Beth to submit the SVDA website to VADA for special website award.
2. Treasurer: Shari reported that the balance to date is $22,028.39 as of January 9, 2012. Shari will be getting
up with the budget committee, Robyn, Shari, Robin to begin that process. Shari reported that there
is a $2 fee for delivery of the paper statement to Janice, which is part of SVDA's checks and balance
system to have a separate reviewer who is not directly involved in the treasury.
3. VADA Rep: no report at this time.
New Business:
Foundation Fund review: Kathy submitted report, but Sandy requested that we table topic until
face to face board meeting for discussion. Sandy motioned and Tristin seconded.
Bylaws and Policies: Kathy requested that the board review the updated/revised manual so they
can be posted on the website ASAP.

Committee Reports
Recognize Show: Donna submitted report and reported on confirmations for the recognize show.
Nancy would make plates again for high point awards. Donna asked for conformation to go ahead and order and pay for the ribbons.
Donna asked if we should order plates for Intro high score, currently we only have ribbons for high score intro awards. Because
the prize list has specified that awards are given only for TL to FEI, we will not have a plate made for Intro Level at this time.
Tristin asked if the board put back in place a reserve champion ribbons. Tristin motioned, Donna seconded. After vote with 7
No's and 6 Yes's the board decided to not award reserve champion high score awards at the recognized show.
Donna made up flyers promoting the cash classes at the SVDA Rec. show. Wendy made a sponsorship form for the recognized
show and Kathy asked that those forms be sent out and returned to Wendy who is again collecting the sponsorship money this
year.
In regards to the incentive for getting sponsorships for the recognized show, Kathy asked if the board would like to keep the same
program. The board agreed
Schooling Shows: Kristen is not present, but Kathy read the report.
The board agreed and approved the sanctioned shows of Tristin's @ Bridlewood, Sandy's @ Happy Valley and 3 in Wil-
liamston. Beth motioned approval, Janice seconded, all accepted.
Discussion was made on having additional SVDA shows. Majority of the club felt that the current show schedule was suffi-
cient and that the sanctioned shows could fill any gap for avid showers.
Carol Gonyo, Tristin, and Mary offered to host the Judge Jesse Ginsburg. Kathy emailed Kristen this and arrangements will
be made.
3. Awards: Carol asked for everyone to vote for the special awards, including board members to vote for volunteer of the year; Grace is
the only board member that is not able to vote on this award for the 2011 year. All the details are set and Awards program is ready.
Sandy asked that the date for 2013 SVDA banquet not be on the same weekend as the VADA banquet. The board tentatively set the
date as Saturday, January 26th. Kathy reminded the board members to bring in door prizes. Carol reminded everyone that theme is
Valentine's Day, and to get reservations in.
Juniors: Tristin reported that the Juniors will not be doing concessions this year. The board decided that the club would not offer
concessions, except for water coolers for safety (requested by Carol Gonyo). Robyn Nunnally will add water coolers to a volun-
teer position so that service will be provided.
Tristin asked if the board would like the Juniors to do an SVDA calendar. That topic was tabled for later in the year.
5. Membership: Reeta Edmundson reported 22 member applications in for 2012. Kathy asked that Reeta make sure Marylyn Leonard get
a hard copy of her membership application and card.
6. Clinics and Programs: Janice reported the Rebecca Vick clinic went very well with very positive feedback. Janice proposed that the
club reserve Rebecca Vick again for a spring clinic.
Discussion on types of clinics that SVDA would hold was either 1) Fix a test clinic, including Dressage Seat Equitation, or 2) hosting a
local clinician. Kathy asked Janice to compile info to send out to members and ask for their feedback on what clinic the members
prefer for a spring clinic.
Half-Halt | Newsletter of the Southeast Virginia Dressage Association Page 4
7. Scholarship: Sandy will be posting the information and deadline information in next newsletter. Robyn proposed that we offer a 3rd
scholarship this year. Because the SVDA policy (back in 2008) identifies that 2 scholarships are offered, an addendum would need
to be proposed to specifically add a 3rd scholarship for 2012. Sandy countered the request by taking our surplus to donate the mon-
ey to another non-profit organization as mentioned in our policy. This brought up the discussion of whether this was a bylaw or
policy. Beth confirmed that it was an SVDA policy specifically for the Wakefield show. Overall Beth thought that the surplus of
money would be best served to the general members via a clinic that could educate many members versus one member. The board
agreed hold at 2 scholarships for this year until able to discuss the topic at next face to face meeting along with the foundation
fund.
Kathy asked Sandy, Beth any others with older versions of the membership manuals to be sent to her so that she could review them and
make sure all we are in accordance with all of our bylaws and policies and that nothing has been "lost" over the years.
8. Ways and Means: Diane sent out a report via email. Coolers are still available to use as prizes for awards for the championship
schooling show. Tristin proposed that we have a committee for the championship schooling show awards. This was tabled for next
meeting.
9. Newsletter and Website: Wendy reported on feedback from the new website.
Adjournment
Kathy adjourned the meeting at 9:27pm. Next meeting will be a face to face meeting on Monday February 27th, 2012 @7pm at Fire Moun-
tain in Suffolk.

Our SVDA trainers gave these tips for up-coming show season...
Ride every step. (Robyn Nunnally) ALWAYS CONTENTRATE on improving your basics fundamentals no matter what level you are training or competing at. Ride tech-nically accurate according to the classical training scale, not just geometrically accurate. Set up balance into and out of eve-ry corner, ride half-halt to half-halt, always work on perfecting your own position and your use of the aids! (Kathy Rowse) If you don't do a movement well in your test, let that one go and concentrate on your next movement. Don't let one less than stellar movement rattle your nerves for the rest of the test! (Anna Schriebl)
Thought for the day….
Easy Keeper? Think Psyllium! It's a vicious cycle - elevated glucose leads to elevated insulin. Elevated insulin leads to excess body fat. Excess body fat leads to too much insulin in the blood (insulin resistance). If only blood glucose levels could be reduced - that would put a halt to this circular pattern. Removing starchy cereal grains, molasses, sugary treats, and testing your hay for low levels of non-structural carbohydrates - all of these are important. But did you know that adding Psyllium husks to your horse's daily diet will also reduce blood glucose? The outer husk of the Psyllium seed (an herb called Plantago ovata) is rich in water-soluble fiber. It has long been used to help remove sand from the hindgut as a means of controlling sand colic. But recent research has revealed its ability to lower blood glucose in horses. It is believed that the fiber slows down glucose absorption and therefore, reduces insulin output from the pancreas. Low sugar/starch diets, plenty of exercise, reduction of stress. all great ways to help your overweight horse lose weight. And now we can add Psyllium to the list! Adding 1/3 cup per meal will lower blood glucose and lower blood insulin, making weight loss easier and preventing obesity-related disorders. Juliet Getty, PH.D.

SVDA’S “ASK THE TRAINER/JUDGE ”
BY: MARTY-ANNA SCHRIEBL
Submit your Questions to…
This month's question is answered by a vet we all know and love! Our reader asked the following question: Dear Ask a Question Column, I'll be showing this year and am worried about keeping my horse healthy when visiting stalls at show barns and trainers. Any tips? Signed, Concerned about Illness in Ivor As show and clinic season is quickly approaching it is important to make sure the only thing your horse brings back is blue rib-bons and new knowledge; not illnesses and bills from the show vet! Every time we take horses off the property and expose them to other horses, we are risking them contracting contagious diseas-es. One of the most important ways to protect your horse against contagious respiratory disease is to make sure they are properly vaccinated. It is best to contact your veterinarian to work out a vaccination schedule that will protect your horse against diseases that are prevalent in your area of travel. The most common contagious respiratory diseases that we vaccinate against are Influen-za (flu), EHV 1-4 (rhino) and Strangles. It is critical to have these vaccinations done at least 2 weeks before your first show or clinic. This ensures that the horse has enough time to make protective antibodies and also gives them time to get over any post vaccine stiffness. If you have horses that travel and are exposed to other horses, your herd is con-sidered “open”. In an “open” herd, ALL horses in the herd should be vaccinated against contagious disease, not just the ones that are leaving the property. The traveling horses, even if well vaccinated, could bring home bugs and expose the non-traveling horses to disease. If the non-traveling horse is not vaccinated then they too can easily get sick.
In the past few years, the neurologic form of EHV-1 has been in the news due to outbreaks at horse shows and racetracks. Unfortunately there is no vaccine that is proven to protect your horse against the neurologic form of EHV-1. The best protection we have at this point is rapid identification and isolation of horses that may have neuro-logic herpes. This is why it is critical to keep a close eye on horses at shows and once they come home to identify horses that may have a fever or act de-pressed. If a horse is suspected of neurologic EHV-1, treatment can be start-ed and the horse can be isolated to prevent further spread of this scary dis-ease.

If a horse is suspected of neurologic EHV-1, treatment can be start-ed and the horse can be isolated to prevent further spread of this scary dis-ease.
Contagious respiratory diseases are typically spread from horse to horse by coughing, sneezing, direct nose to nose con-tact or though shared buckets or stalls. Always bring your own buckets and do not allow your horse to drink at a shared water trough if one is offered. If you see a horse with signs of illness (snotty nose, cough), make sure you bring it to the attention of show management. If you are using the show facility’s stabling it is a good idea to disinfect the stall prior to use. Most disinfectants will not work in the presence of organic matter such as manure or nasal discharge. Therefore you must clean the area to be disinfected first; dish soap or laundry detergent works well. After cleaning, a disinfectant can be applied. Make sure to dilute the product according to label directions and allow it to dry before putting the horse in the stall. This is also a good time to check the stall for any hazards like areas where a foot could get caught or protruding nails. Another common cause of illness at a show is colic. While colic (or abdominal pain) can strike anytime, poor water con-sumption, changes in routine and more time stalled make horse shows a prime place to have a colic episode. Try to keep your horse’s feed and feeding schedule consistent. If they are used to long periods of turnout take them on fre-quent walks through the show grounds. Lack of water consumption and subsequent dehydration are a major cause of colic at shows. If your horse doesn’t drink well at shows try flavoring his water at home with Gator-aid or Kool-Aid pow-der. This can be added to the “strange” tasting water at a show to encourage drinking. Another cause of colic at a show can be stomach ulcers. Studies indicate that 60% of show horses have some degree of ulcers. If your horse does not eat well at a show, ulcers may be the culprit. It is a great idea to use Ulcergard© to prevent ulcers while traveling and showing. If you suspect your horse already has an ulcer, it is important to get it diagnosed via endoscopy and treated with Gastrogard©. Once your horse returns from a show or clinic, it is important to keep a close eye on them for illness. Most respiratory diseases show up within 2-3 weeks of exposure to the disease. If you are concerned that your horse may have been exposed to something, isolating them from other horses and taking their temperature twice daily may let you catch the illness early and prevent it from spreading throughout the barn. Following these simple tips will help you minimize the chance your horse brings home something unwanted from a show or clinic. Hope everyone has a successful, injury and illness free show season.
