WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRESS REPORT FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH2013

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA)co-ordinated Waste Management Services during the month of March, 2013. Our focus during the period under review include: domestic, public, commercial, medical (hazardous) and market waste. Others are street sweeping, local policing,marine waste, public awareness/education, enforcement, recycling, landfill and Transfer Loading Station Management. 2. Summary of report for the month of March, 2013 indicates the following: GENERAL ADMINISTRATION: A total of 22,461 workforce were deployed during the month for waste management operations. LANDFILL

A total of341,804.75m3(1) of waste was collected during the month (Landfill report attached).(Jan. 2013: 342,012.27m3& Feb. 2013:324,375.08m3)

A total of 17,216 Vehicular trips were received at landfill sites:Olushosun, Solous II,Solous III, Ewu-Elepe, Epe, Simpsonand Oshodi TLS

MEDICAL WASTE

A total of 5,386.96kg safety boxes, 29,816.64kg of pathological waste were collected from healthcare facilities across the State. (Including the General Hospitals and Primary Healthcare Centres).

A total of2,177commercial medical/healthcare facilities were serviced while 7new facilities were enlisted. (Jan 2012: 2,119 & Feb 2013: 2,198)

PUBLIC RELATIONS

Public Enlightenment and awareness programmes were carried out on eleven(11) radio stations and one(1) television station these includes:

A total of 339 PSP Operators serviced 367 wards in 20 Local Government Councils and 37 Local Council Development Areas of the State during the period under review

1,274 complaints relating to service delivery and online bill reconciliation were received from the public. These complaints were attended to promptly

Intervention services were provided by LAWMA trucks in the following areas due to poor performance of the PSP operators:

STREET SWEEPING

158 Service Providers with 7,660 employees (Street Sweepers) and 1,520 HighwayManagers were supervised during the month with the following observations:

Special cleaning operations during the Lagos Easter Carnival New set of C-caution signs was distributed to sweepers on the highways Continuous deployment of 4nos. mechanical sweepers to cover night operations onIkorodu

Road, Iyana-Ipaja, Apapa, Oshodi, Airport Road, 3rd Mainland Bridge, Mobolaji Bank-Anthony, TBS, Awolowo Road Ikoyi and other major highways

MARKET WASTE

A total of21,304.56m3waste was collected from day and night markets during the month (Jan. 2013: 23,320.16m3& Feb. 2013: 19,559.34m3)

STREET MONITORING AND ENFORCEMENT

Street policing outfits carried out operations on 56 major highways. Some of the areas policed include:Ojuelegba, Obele-Lawanson Road, OkeAfa-Ikotun Roundabout, Jakande Estate, IsheriOsun, Ijegun Road, Shangotedo, Lakowe, Ibeju, Ilasan, Ajah, Badore, Ahmadu Bello, Akin Adesolaseme Border- Badagry Roundabout-Ajara, CMS/Inner Marina/Outer marina, Ajegunle-Majidun-Ipakodo, OshohiOke-Toyota-Airport Road, Ikorodu Road(both sides) Oworonshoki Axis- Alapere- Toll Gate, Mile 12-Ajegunle-Epo, Ojota through Oregun to Alausa, Moshalashi-Post office, Isolo Road, Sadiku Express, , Idumagbo-Adeniji Adele Loop

A total of 24 sanitation offenders were apprehended and successfully prosecuted. 12 premises were sealed up and prosecuted for sanitation offences in Iyana-Ipaja, Badiya, Orile, Mile 2 to OlutiAlakija, AbuleEgba and Agege

A total of 365 Carts were sized at various locations in the State and were crushed at Olushosum Landfill Site.

TRANSFER LOADING STATION

Simpson TLS received a total of 21,995.43m3of waste during the month. (Jan. 2013: 8,732.84m3& Feb. 2013: 11,659.85m3)

Oshodi TLS received a total of 11,183.78m3of waste during the month. (Jan. 2013: 9,139.09m3& Feb. 2013: 11,183.78m3)

RECYCLING

There was no production of Compost at Odogunyan Compost Plant 33 roll of Nylon of 625kg was produced at the Oloshosun Recycling Plant Other recyclable materials collected from the buy-back centre and recycling banksincludes: Cartoon:

975kg, Can: 583.5kg, Pet bottle:3,854kg, Bottle:809kg, PE Sachets: 3,784kg and Paper 38kg MARINE WASTE

Marine waste work force of 1,289 covered the shores lines of the state with special focus on Lekki, Adeniji Adele, Walter Carrington, Orile Canal, Iwaya Canal, Iddo, Oyingbo, Agboyi Creek, Epe, Ejiurin Jetty, Obalende Canal, Masha-Akerele Canal, OzumbaNbadiwe, EbuteEro, Ketu-Alapere canal, Mile 2, Makoko, Ipakodo, Badagry, , Apapa,Oworonshoki, Agege/Oko-Oba Canal, Bode Thomas/Alaka Canal, Ibeshe, Marinaetc

A total of 21,800.42m3(Jan 2013: 21,690.23m3& Feb 2013:24,008.32m3) of waste was collected from Lagos shorelines in the month under review.

3. NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENT

2 Co-ordinators and 6 supervisors of Street Sweepers were sponsored to overseas training on Waste Management in Sheffield(United Kingdom) in March, 2013
