Meet Minnesota CougPAIGE DANIELSONELECTRICAL ENGINEERING | CLASS OF 2019Paige joined WSU’s Honors College, became a research assistant in a microchips lab, and spent three summers as an intern at hydropower facilities throughout the Northwest.

She also walked on to the University’s Pac-12 women’s rowing team, competed in the NCAA championships, and was named an Academic All-American—yet she says it’s the small moments she treasures most.

Now she’s starting a Ph.D., focusing her studies on electromagnetics, radio frequency, and microwave radiation.

W H E R E E X AC T LY I S P U L L M A N ?Glad you asked! Pullman is located in eastern Washington about 75 miles south of Spokane and eight miles west of Moscow, Idaho. We’re nestled among 10,000 square miles of beautiful rolling hills in an area called the Palouse. Our location is perfect for camping, hiking, skiing, kayaking, rafting, and more. We even have 35 miles of paved bike paths. Grab a fellow Coug, and go explore!

See it for yourself!

Meet Hawai‘i CougANTONIO BAKPSYCHOLOGY (PRE-MEDICINE)JUNIORFor Antonio, coming to WSU was a leap into the unknown. He had never been to the Northwest, but the promise of snow and the University’s strong science programs beckoned.

The leap paid off: he felt a sense of community the second he stepped onto campus. And when a friend asked for help starting a club, he jumped right in. As VP of the WSU Cookie Club, he helps students meld the therapeutic process and delicious results of baking with a variety of self-care and mental health resources.

WSU Cougs are creators, innovators, builders, and authors. We are motivators, self-starters, and scholars. We look to the stars while staying down-to-earth.

Above all else, we live our lives and pursue our studies with purpose. We come together from all over the world determined to change it for the better. And we’re not afraid to roll up our sleeves and lead the way.

WHO are the COUGS?

I love how many ways there are to get started in

research here. I’m working in a psychology lab right now,

learning the ropes. Next year I might even start a project

of my own.

You can find Cougs at the biggest and most innovative companies around: Microsoft, Amazon, the Boeing Company, Google, NBC, Marriott, Hilton Hotels Worldwide, Deloitte, Insight Global, Enterprise Holdings, Energy NW, just to name a few.

WSU students also go on to work for a wide variety of community organizations and small businesses—and also start their own. The WSU alumni network is worldwide and opens doors for Cougs in all industries.

Meet California CougJASMINE ARMAS HUMAN DEVELOPMENT CLASS OF 2019Jasmine chose WSU so she could attend a Pac-12, top-tier research university—and experience a new part of the country (with four very different seasons). She loved the spirited, helpful community on campus, especially her advisors who worked with her one-on-one to change her major without delaying graduation. Her favorite memory of campus? Her first WSU football game.

“ “

I’ve always felt supported here.

‘Cougs help Cougs’ is a big saying in Pullman and it’s so true. At WSU,

everyone is willing to help you succeed.

TOP FIVEREASONS out-of-statestudents CHOOSE WSU

I T ’ S A F F O R D A B L EOut-of-state students with a qualifying GPA automatically receive scholarships. Our Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) award—which we call the Distinguished Cougar Award—is $11,000 per year for up to four years. We also offer the Cougar Award, which provides $7,000 per year for up to four years. With one of these scholarships, a California student can attend WSU for the same tuition or even less than the UC system. The cost of living in Pullman is low, and the minimum wage is high—$12.00 an hour and increasing to $13.50 in 2020.

YO U ’ L L E N J OY A V I B R A N T S T U D E N T E X P E R I E N C E Whether you’re in a fraternity or sorority or living in the residence halls, you’ll find a home away from home at WSU. There’s also no shortage of things to do. Experience the roar of a packed Martin Stadium football game. Play intramural sports. Attend a concert in Beasley Coliseum or on Terrell Mall. Join a student club. Volunteer on campus or in the Pullman community.

YO U C A N G R A D UAT E I N F O U R Y E A R SWith our non-impacted majors, you can graduate in four years, saving you time and money. With 95 majors and nearly 200 options to customize them, we’ve got you covered.

YO U ’ L L G R A D UAT E C A R E E R - R E A DYWSU encourages undergraduate research and offers hands-on learning opportunities in every major. The University helps students find internships with companies and organizations throughout the U.S. You could even have a job offer waiting before you graduate.

A C L A S S I C C O L L E G E T O W NPullman is one of America’s top 10 college towns and 25 most livable small cities—ranked by Sunset Magazine, MSN, livability.com, and Demographics Daily. The whole town rallies around its University. People smile, say “good morning,” hold doors open for each other, and are just kind in general. It’s part of our DNA.

“ “TIER 1 RESEARCH UNIVERSITYWSU is among fewer than 3% of U.S. universities that qualify for the Carnegie Foundation’s “very high research activity” classification.

HONORS COLLEGEEnjoy smaller, discussion-based classes taught by award-winning professors. Add a global perspective to any major. And you can still graduate in four years.

Avg. GPA of incoming Honors students is 3.85 (high school unweighted).

Meet Nevada Coug

GARRETT KALT POLITICAL SCIENCE &PUBLIC RELATIONS | CLASS OF 2018Garrett accomplished a lot at WSU. He was an Honors College student and a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He did backpack journalism projects in Cuba and Guatemala, was a Boeing Scholar, and was elected vice presi-dent of the University’s student government.

His WSU experience inspired him to start LEAD Green, a nonprofit that helps rural high school students develop leadership skills. In addition, he recently finished an accelerated master’s program in politics and communication at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

PRE-HEALTH & PRE-LAWProfessional schools of health and law don’t prefer or require any particular major—just choose a major you enjoy and can do well in.

Professional schools in health care fields do require specific prerequisites, however.

Our Health Professions Student Center and Pre-Law Resource Center can help you get the right prerequisites and prepare for the school of your choice.

DO YOU NEED A CAR? Nope! Everything is within walking distance. Plus, the Pullman Transit bus system travels between campus and Pullman and is free for students. WSU also has bike sharing, Zimride, and Zipcar.

We walk and bike everywhere, whether it’s downtown or across campus. We thrive on coffee, Cougar Gold cheese, free movies at the Compton Union Building, and the uniqueness of two college towns connected by an 8-mile bike path.

We value arts, culture, science, and innovation. Between our lively music programs and the always-changing exhibits at WSU’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, there’s never a shortage of artistic expression in Pullman.

We have small-town friendliness and everything you’ll need for a meaningful college experience.
