Definitions Education Abroad is “education that occurs outside the participant’s home country. Besides study abroad, examples include such international experiences as work, volunteering, non-credit internships and directed travel, as long as these programs are driven to a significant degree by learning goals.”

804 individual students participated in education abroad experiences through WSU 10 students participated in more than one education abroad program

Study Abroad is defined as “the act of a student pursuing for credit educational opportunities in a country other than one’s own.” Study Abroad is identified as a subset of Education Abroad.

672 WSU students participated in study abroad experiences 688 students participated in study abroad experiences through WSU 121 students participated in non-credit education abroad experiences

Note: Throughout this report, statistics are defined as "duplicated" or "unduplicated" as needed for clarification.

Duplicated count shows each student counted based on the number of different programs he or she participated in, multiple countries visited, and those with more than one major.

Unduplicated count signifies that each individual is counted only once regardless the number of programs, countries or majors.

Non-Degree students are those from other institutions who participate in WSU study abroad programs. These students apply through the Global Learning Department, earn WSU credit and represent WSU while they are abroad. They are included and identified separately in some of the statistics in this report.

16 non-degree students studied abroad through WSU

WSU student data is from the Common Data Set for 2015-2016 available at http://ir.wsu.edu/Common%20Data%20Set.

National numbers are reported from the Institute of International Education’s 2015 Open Doors Report. Information is available at http://iie.org/Research-and-Publications/Open-Doors. A physical copy of the IIE 2015 Open Doors Report is kept on file in the Office of International Program-Global Learning Department. Statistics are reported in a manner that is consistent with Open Doors reporting when possible.

Unless otherwise noted, all data in this report pertains to Academic Year 2015.

Global Learning Participation "At Home"

Global Case Competition

Spring 2016 saw the 6th annual Global Case Competition where 79 students on 14 teams came together to develop innovative solutions to a specific world problem. The topic for this year's competition was arbitrary detention in the United States, with the winning team invited to present their solution to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) in Geneva, Switzerland. In order to be considered eligible a team must have 4-6 students and have at least 2 undergraduate and 2 graduate students, 1 international student, representation from 2 different colleges at WSU, and representation from at least 2 WSU campuses. The following is a breakdown of this year’s participants:

Peer Advisors are an integral part of the Global Learning Department and play a vital role in achieving the mission of the Office of International Programs. Sixteen students participated in the Peer Advisor program in AY 2015.

Global Learning Ambassador Program

Twenty-three Global Learning Ambassadors served as a resource to students interested in study abroad by fielding questions about their experiences abroad.
