As mentioned last week in my Connect report I am thrilled to share we have been allocated an additional $298,000 by the state government as part of the maintenance funding to schools to implement our toilet reno-vations. This is in addition to the $90,000 allocated for numerous other works to be undertaken across our school to ensure our students are well supported. The $300k will be used to implement high quality student toi-let renovations at Warranwood PS. This is an exciting opportunity for our community to be able to upgrade our facilities for our students’ comfort and wellbeing and this has been on our school council agenda for the last 2 years. We will have further details of time-lines and construction later in the year. Reflecting and Evaluating 2019 and Setting Targets for 2020 With many students away on Monday due to the Melbourne Cup Long weekend I took the chance to hold a day long School Improvement Team workshop to evaluate our 2019 Annual Implementation Plan, Goals, Key Im-provement Strategies and Targets that were set for our Literacy work this year. I am very pleased to report that all Literacy data targets have been achieved and even bettered this year using Vic Curriculum Reading targets and Naplan Year 3 to 5 Reading HIGH Growth improving from 17% up to 26% this year beating our target of 23% by 3%. Staff- Professional Learning and Teaching and Learning compo-nents scored all above our set targets for the year with positive endorsement scores around 85% , Parent per-spectives of managing of bullying was positively endorsed at 92% and our student survey components that re-lated to Student Voice and Agency reached 88% positive endorsement and Differentiated Learning was also positively endorsed at 96%, these results pleasingly beating our 2019 targets that were set. This by no means indicates that we have everything perfect but provides us with sound feedback for our continued work to im-prove our practice at Warranwood. The work that has been undertaken across our school at all levels is a credit to the passion and commitment of our staff for our students learning and includes building greater consistency in Reading and Writing Workshops and implementation of our Gradual Release Instructional Model, Use of High Impact Teaching Strategies, de-velopment of staff data literacy skills and analysis for planning purposes, implementation of Instructional Lead-ership at every planning team session with Suzanne Kot our Assistant Principal participating in all planning ses-sions each week to ensure a clear line of sight for our leadership goals and targets. Implementation of 2 Learn-ing Specialists – Ray and Dee who support teachers with modelling, coaching conversations and observation opportunities has also enabled us to build middle layers of leadership along with numerous other staff under-taking significant professional learning to build expertise amongst our staff. This along with whole staff THRASS phonemic spelling and Fountas and Pinnell Reading professional learning have formed the back bone of our strategy and improvements achieved. In 2020 we will shift our deep work focus, professional learning and targets to developing our whole school consistency and practice with excellent Numeracy learning and teaching. We will be setting targets in our new Annual Implementation Plan for 2020 to drive our performance and undertake ongoing and targeted profes-sional learning to build the consistent and coherent practice that best supports student success and growth in Numeracy. This will start at the beginning of the year on our first Curriculum Day with all staff undertaking a full day of pedagogical learning with Rob Vingerhoets to build rich Numeracy tasks that differentiate and allow for multiple entry and exit points for students to experience success and engage in high level thinking and problem solving. We will follow this learning with Rob working with staff at planning sessions and then modelling learn-ing in the classrooms with students also throughout the year. 2020 is already looking to be an exciting learning environment at Warranwood. Welcome to Warranwood 2020 Prep Families This morning we welcomed our new Preppies for 2020 for their first taste of school life. For some they adapted like ducks to water, especially if they have been bringing their brothers and sisters to school over the last few years. For those just starting at Warranwood it was a big morning filled with a range of emotions. I’m glad to say the morning was a great success and everyone settled into their classes for some fun activities and making friends. Thanks to our FoW team for organising the coffee van and giving our new parents a meeting point to share stories and their own mixed bag of emotions. Next Friday we will host a morning tea for our 2020 Prep families and welcome our PSW uniform team and current Prep families to share stories from their experiences as a first time mum or dad at Warranwood. Students Using Mobile Phones The Minister for Education released a new Students Using Mobile Phones Policy for all Victorian government schools on 7 October 2019. This policy requires that from Term 1 2020, students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours, including re-cess and lunchtime. We have a local school policy on mobile phones that reflects this requirement and which provides details for the implementation of the policy at our school. Purpose of this policy This policy outlines the requirements of the Minister for Education relating to students using mobile phones during school hours. Definitions For the purpose of this policy, a mobile phone is a telephone with access to a cellular (telecommunication) system, with or without a physical connection to a network. Summary – Critical information From Term 1 2020, students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours. Exceptions to the policy may be applied if certain conditions are met. Exceptions can be granted by the princi-pal, or by a teacher. Exceptions must be documented. Where students bring a mobile phone to school, the school must provide secure storage. Schools are required to develop a local Students Using Mobile Phones policy, which must include how this Ministerial policy will be implemented. Schools will manage non-compliance with their local mobile phone policy in accordance with their existing stu-dent engagement polices. Rationale The Victorian Government takes the safe and responsible use of digital technologies, student safety and well-being, and the development of social skills and positive behaviour, very seriously. On this basis, the Hon. James Merlino MP, Minister for Education, announced that a new mobile phone policy would take effect from Term 1 2020. Whilst the Victorian Government acknowledges that we live in a technology-rich world where mobile phones are an important communication tool, research has found that mobile phones can be disruptive in classrooms and open to misuse at school. The unregulated presence of mobile phones in classrooms can undermine stu-dents’ capacity to think, learn, remember, pay attention and regulate emotion. At recess and lunchtime, opportunities for students to communicate with each other face-to-face or be in-volved in physical activity are also valued, rather than students being focused on a mobile phone, particularly when they are using it to engage with social media. This new policy acknowledges that technology is increasingly affecting how students learn and communicate.

Therefore, when a student has been given explicit permission to access and use such devices to enhance learning by the classroom teacher, mobile phones will be permitted for that specific purpose. For a small num-ber of students with particular health and wellbeing needs, an exception to the policy may also be granted. This policy will remove a major distraction from our classrooms, so that teachers can teach, and students can learn in a more focused, positive and supported environment. Policy From Term 1 2020, students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours. Schools are required to develop a local Students Using Mobile Phones policy which must include how this Min-isterial policy will be implemented. Suzanne Kot Assistant Principal
