Senior School Poetry The Senior School students have been learning different forms of poetry. Here are some examples of the work our students have produced based on our Term 4 topic of animals. Haiku (17 syllables: 5-7-5) Blizzards are not cold For one as giant as me The snow is my home

School: School, means exactly; Six. Cruel. Hours. Of. Our. Lives. Education’s tough! By Kiralee 5/6 RP The Soldier: Fighting for freedom Lives at stake, all on the line Will this horror end? By Kade W 5/6 CT Quatrain (four line stanzas, with AABB or ABAB rhyming sequence) Animals dying one by one Being killed under the sun One minute drinking nice cool water The next being captured for brutal slaughter Once the animals are gone, we can’t get them back The poachers using them for hat racks The predators lurking, ripping animals apart Climate change might as well shoot them like a dart.

Free Verse (an irregular form of poetry in which the content is free of traditional rules of fixed meter or rhyme) I follow the lion waiting for its next prey so I can scavenge for leftovers. Night comes, I hunt on my own waiting for a baby so I can feed. My laugh calls the herd to get ready to have a feast of a lifetime.

Erika H, 56AD

The Senior School this week have been working on Haiku poems which originated in Japan. They consist of 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second line and 5 in the final line. Here is a sample of some of the student’s poetry.
