WARRADALE PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 10 th December 2015 [email protected] Week 9 Term 4 No. 21 Farewell to those leaving Warradale At the end of a school year there are always a number of people leaving the school for a variety of reasons: moving house, moving interstate, change in jobs, etc. We have 13 students leaving Warradale Primary and moving to different schools throughout the metropolitan area. We wish them continued success in their new school. We also thank their parents for supporting them and the school. This year we have 27 Year 7 Graduates leaving our school. All of them will take different paths for their secondary schooling, some with friends; others on their own. The school community wishes them the best of luck with their future schooling. A formal Graduation recognising their achievements and schooling at Warradale Primary was held on Wednesday night. We also need to acknowledge their parents. For most of them, this will be their last link with the Warradale School community. I thank them for their support and involvement in the school throughout their child’s education. Changes in Staff I am pleased to announce that we will be having four new teachers join our school next year. Maureen Davidson will be our new Deputy Principal. Maureen is currently the Deputy Principal at Richmond Primary School and has previous experience in a number of southern metropolitan schools as a curriculum leader, maths coach and teacher. We also have two other classroom teachers joining us. They are Meredith McArdle and Stacey Konidaris. Meredith comes to us from Highgate Primary School and Stacey has been working at Lockleys Primary School. Our fourth new member to the teaching team is Jacinta Wade. Jacinta will be our new Japanese Specialist teacher. Jacinta is currently working at Moana Primary School. I am sure that the Warradale School community will make them all welcome. We also have a number of teachers leaving our school at the end of this term. They are Kylie Johnson, Peter Stephanopoulos, Jessica Ireland, Sarah Will and Lachlan Allison. All of these teachers have done an outstanding job at our school and we wish them the best of luck with their future career paths. We also have to say goodbye to Michael Hosking, our current Deputy Principal. Michael has accepted a Principal position at Prospect North Primary School next year. Michael has done an exceptional job taking on the role of acting principal and deputy over the past six months. His work has been greatly appreciated by all of us and we wish him the best of luck at his new school. GOVERNING COUNCIL NEWS 2016 Materials and Service Charge. Results from the community polling process demonstrated that 89% of respondents were in

favour of setting the 2016 Materials and Service Charges at $300. As a result, the Governing Council has accepted the majority rule in this matter. This means that the Governing Council can undertake legal debt recovery action for the full amount of $300 for the non-payment of the 2016 Materials and Service Charges.

REPORTS/CLASS PLACEMENTS: Semester 2 Reports and class placement letters will be sent home today. All Reception to Year 6 students visited their 2016 class today (Thursday) to spend some time with their 2016 teacher and classmates. Some children find change stressful and you can help by focussing on the positives. At school we talk about “good” scary. This is a change that is exciting and safe. A new class is exciting, a chance to do different things with a new teacher and to make new friends. Please help your child to focus on the positives.

LAST DAY OF TERM: Tomorrow is the last day of term for 2015. School finishes at 2:10pm. At 1:40pm, everyone in the school goes outside and makes a Guard of Honour tunnel for our exiting year 7 students to walk through.

MUSIC SUCCESS There are a number of students attending our school that are involved in a variety of activities and special interests outside of school. The range of interests includes sports, dance, arts and cultural events to name a few. Jazmin (Yr 7) enjoys playing the piano in her spare time. Recently she competed in the Norman Sellick Memorial Music Competition where she had to play two contrasting pieces of music. The judging panel likened her performance to that of a professional concert pianist with the sense of style and musical prowess! Jaz won first prize for her age group which was quite a substantial cash prize. Instead of spending the money on herself, she gave it to her dad to put towards a plane ticket so her best friend in Hungary can come here to experience an Aussie

Christmas! Jaz has been accepted into the Brighton Secondary School Music program where she can continue her studies in piano. Congratulations Jaz!

BREAKFAST CLUB Congratulations to Dianne Schroeder and her team for their tireless effort in making the Breakfast Club so successful! The Breakfast Club will start up again on Wednesday 10th February 2016 (Week 2, Term 1)

SCHOOL SPORT T-Ball and Cricket A big thank you to our coaches, parent helpers and students for making Term 4 summer sport run smoothly. Cricket and T-Ball will be back in Term 1 and we hope to see many of you out at training again. Watch out for nomination forms in the first newsletter of 2016.

SCHOOL TRAFFIC MONITORS Recently all of our current Year 5 and 6 students took part in School Crossing Monitor Training conducted by the South Australian Police. Next year, as part of our Community and Service action to support the broader school community, all of the Year 6/7 students will be rostered on as Traffic Monitors and will be required to do a week’s roster duty a few times throughout the year. As trained Traffic Crossing monitors the students, under the Road Traffic Act 1961 authorises the student to work as school crossing monitor. The certificate authorises the student to stop traffic using a Stop Sign as well as give reasonable directions to pedestrians for the safe and efficient movement of traffic at or on the crossing as in their opinion is necessary. It is extremely important that all people (including parents) use the crossings and become good road safety role models, by following the School Crossing Monitor’s directions, not only for their safety but the safety of all students and road users.

Healthy Eating Ambassador Thank you to everyone who has contributed recipes this year and taken part in Nude Food Days. Here are two easy recipes for Christmas that families can make together. These are fun to make, tasty to eat and contain no bad additives! Merry Christmas from Cleary!

Chocolate Crispies 225g plain chocolate 50g butter 2 tbsp. golden syrup 100g corn flakes Break chocolate into pieces and put them in a large pan. Add butter, then golden syrup (use a spoon dipped into hot water so it doesn’t stick). Heat gently until melted. Take off heat and stir in corn flakes until coated. Spoon into 10 patty pans and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Chococonut Macaroons 2 egg whites ½ c. sugar 100g chocolate 2c. shredded coconut Preheat oven to 150. Line 2 baking trays. Beat egg whites in large bowls until stiff peaks form. Gradually beat in sugar a little at a time until dissolved and mix is glossy. Grate ½ of the chocolate and fold into mix with the coconut. Drop generous teaspoonful of the mixture onto tray (mixture will spread so allow space) Cook for 15 mins until golden and firm. Melt rest of chocolate and drizzle over Allow chocolate to set.

A Word from Emily To show an act of kindness to our staff the Kindness Club held a car wash. 8 cars were washed and the lucky staff returned the kindness by giving a gold coin donation to our RSPCA fund. “Being kind is easy but it makes a big difference” - Kindness Club Motto Enjoy the holidays everyone, see you next year! “Do not let kindness leave you, write it on the tablet of your heart.” Emily Dummin

CHILDREN’S UNIVERSITY

Our school's involvement with Children’s University Australia has been featured regularly in the newsletter this year. It has been a very successful program and will run again next year. If your child is in Years 5-7 in 2016 they can join the program by purchasing a passport from the Front Office for $30. All of the students who were involved in the program this year are keen to continue and work towards higher certificates. They have shared some of their thoughts about the learning opportunities they were offered and their first graduation ceremony.

What I liked about being involved in the Children’s University… I really liked the fact that you had to work for every hour. I also liked that there are so many destinations. Lachlan, Year 5

Give Children’s University a go. It is fun and a great way to spend time with your friends. Max, Year 6

I enjoyed Go Global Club because it allowed me to communicate with someone my age in England. I’ve wanted to have a pen pal for a while now and since I started Children’s University my wish has become a reality. Sarah, Year 6

I enjoyed everything I did for Children’s University, this year was the best. Scott, Year 6

I liked Children’s University because of all the new stuff I did like Drama, Drawing Club and Bounce. Angelo, Year 6

What I liked most about the graduation ceremony was the karaoke, it was really fun. Esther, Year 5

I enjoyed earning time for doing learning outside of school. It’s an amazing experience when you graduate. Caleb, Year 5

I loved graduating at the University of Adelaide. I loved it after the ceremony when we got to sing karaoke, have caricatures drawn of us and have dinner. Liam, Year 6

I liked Go Global because I like having a pen pal. The best thing at the graduation was the karaoke, it was super-dooper fun! Crystal, Year 6

I think Children’s University is a great experience. You will learn a lot. Nathan Year 6

I really liked Drawing Club, Drama and Dance. You should join because it’s really cool! Cleary Year 6
