Walker Families:
Welcome back after a restful break and happy New Year to you as
well! December certainly flew by this year after a month full of
activities and events. The students at Walker are tremendously
talented. The chorus, band, and string events were amazing and
each year I am amazed at how quickly our student musicians grow
and develop their skills. I'd like to thank each of our directors, Mr.
Collins, Mrs. Goddard, Mrs. Lewkow, and Mr. Wagstaff who work
diligently with their students to make them successful. The events
that took place over the last several weeks made this clearly
evident. Hope you were able to experience this firsthand!
As we head into the New Year, I'd like to reflect on 2016 and take a
moment to thank all of our volunteers, including our most generous
SCO for their dedication to the Walker Community. Without
them we wouldn’t be able to hold assemblies, Open Gym nights,
PBIS days, treat days, hot lunch days, or have staff
recognition. From our Walker Family to yours, thank you for
everything you've done and continue to do to support our staff and
students!
The 2nd Quarter will be soon wrapping up. Students have taken
their second round of STAR assessments and will be gearing up for
the second half of the year. Please continue communicating with
teachers about any concerns you may have.

Dear Parents and Students,
Happy New Year! I hope you have been able to enjoy a restful
break, filled with fun times spent with family and friends.
As always, the first days back will be busy ones! On January 10th 2017,
students from each homeroom will be completing in grade level
spelling bees during each lunch period to determine who will
represent Hilda Walker in the District Spelling Bee. Each homeroom
and ELA teacher conducted classroom spelling bees before the
break to determine the winners from each class. Our 5th Grade class
winners are: Breanne Lott, Kara Moss, Olivia Coco, Elijah El’Ohym,
Lauren Bogard, Zachary Schwarz, Andrew Newsom, Bilal Iqbal, Tyler
Dahlstrom, Nick Smithgall, Ali Odeh, Natalia Gutierrez, Ann Haggerty,
and David Jensen. The 6th Grade winners are: Delaney Mickiewicz,
Katerina Wojcik, Jackson Lewandowski, Niyam Nielson, Tyler Lange,
Payton Hoehn, Jason Ulit, Olivia Burghard, Jawad Rafati, Juliana
Cogswell, Jessariia Nelson, CeCe Petrovich, Alyssa Swiech, Addi
Fischer, and Connor Simek. Congratulations to these students and
best of luck!
With the Third Quarter right around the corner, I look forward to all of
the fun and excitement that the rest of this year is sure to bring!

Safety Patrol
Greetings from your Walker Safety Awareness team! The team has been busy researching and
discussing how to keep safe during the winter months. The team has found great hints to use when
driving in the winter.
Helpful Hints for Winter
Keep your headlights clear with car wax.
Just wipe ordinary car wax on your headlights. It contains special water repellents that will prevent
that messy mixture from accumulating on your lights.
Squeak proof your wipers with rubbing alcohol.
Wipe the wipers with a cloth saturated with rubbing alcohol or ammonia.
Ice-Proof your window with vinegar! Frost on its way?
Just fill a spray bottle with three parts vinegar to one part water and spritz it on your window at
night. In the morning the windows will be clear.
Fog-proof your windshield with saving cream!
Spray some shaving cream on the inside of your windshield and wipe off with paper towels.
De-ice your lock in seconds with hand sanitizer!
Just put some hand sanitizer gel on the key and the lock!

TIPS FOR KEEPING KIDS FLU FREE
Tip 1: Make sure your children get a seasonal flu vaccine.
The best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated.
Tip 2: Encourage healthy hygiene.
Remind your kids to wash their hands frequently and to cover their mouths with a tissue or shirt
sleeve when they cough.
Also, encourage them not to share drinks or eating utensils with their friends.
Tip 3: Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs spread that way.
Tip 4: Don’t share the germs.
If your child has a fever or displays symptoms of the flu, including body aches, sore throat,
headache or a cough, keep your child home from school.
Those with flu-like illness should stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever,
or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines. They should stay home even if
they are using antiviral drugs.
Tip 5: Regularly visit www.flu.gov.

your family healthy this flu season.

Science Club
The Hilda Walker Science Club wrapped up another successful year with an Egg Drop on
December 5th. The students needed to design a system to protect a raw egg during a 10 foot
fall. All students had criteria they needed to follow, and a limit on the materials they could use.
In the end, three groups had a successful Egg Drop:

In addition to our Egg Drop, students in science club learned about chemical reactions,
polymers and even how different mixtures of dirt, soil and sand can actually ‘clean’ dirty
water! We also had a great opportunity to send some seeds and soil into ‘near space’ –
almost 20 miles above the Earth’s surface- on a high altitude balloon. Working with scientists
from the Adler Planetarium, we sent some seeds and soil on a balloon to investigate if near
space conditions – extreme cold, high levels of radiation, and low air pressures- would affect
the germination rate of seeds. Although our experiment did not quite work (our seedlings died
over the Thanksgiving break due to lack of water), we got to work with some amazing scientists
and learn some real-world applications of scientific concepts.

Team Ohio State University

Happy New Year, from team Ohio State! We are all looking forward to the New Year. Our
students will start off 2017 by setting academic goals for the second semester and writing New
Year’s resolutions.
Our students are all excited about the snow. So, we’ve used their excitement to help them
enhance their writing abilities. The children have participated in several snow themed writing
assignments that ranged from describing how a snowman feels about the sub-zero temperatures
to writing persuasive letters to Mrs. Rain’s asking for more (or less) snow days. Pictured below are
snowman poems created by the students in Mrs. Maranto’s homeroom.
All of the team OSU students are really into our current social studies units as they travel the, “Road
to Independence”. In each class the children are learning about the events that led up to the
American Revolution and the birth of our nation. This month the children will be writing and
producing news clips about these different events which they will present to their classmates.

Our reading units this month will be directly related to social studies. This theme has several historical
fiction stories related to the events the children are reading about in social studies. We will use
these stories to practice inferencing and learn about cause and effect. The children will also learn
about different levels of questions and how to apply better questioning strategies as they read
In science we have finished our chemistry units and will focus on Biomes this month. Pictured below

News from Team Alabama
Mrs. Chikerotis, Mrs. Gallagher, Mr. Klosak, Mrs. Milazzo, and Mrs. Pelkowski
Team Alabama will be kicking off the New Year focusing on fractions in math. The students will
learning how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. In social studies, students will begin
their study on the causes of the American Revolution. In science, our Earth Science unit will begin
using our new Stem Scopes science curriculum. In reading, students will continue to develop skills
such as main idea/details, cause/effect, and fact/opinion while reading texts related to our social
studies curriculum.

Team ISU students have been working hard on finishing the first half of the year strongly. We are all
excited for the snow to be here; even though we don’t prefer the bitter cold. Please remember to
dress your child in proper winter attire; winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, etc.
Congratulations to our classroom Spelling Bee winners! They will be participating in the grade level
Spelling Bee when we return from break. You’ll have to be sure to ask your child who their
classroom winner is!

Notre Dame Team
Mrs. Sajewich, Mrs. Mc Farland, Ms. Mittelstadt, Mrs. Dermody and Mrs. Dempsey
Mrs. Sajewich’s/Mrs. McFarland’s Reading/Language Arts Classes
Students have learned all about Greek Mythology in preparation for our new novel, Percy Jackson
and the Lightning Thief. Please make sure your student has their novel in class on January 9th to be
ready to start reading.
They also have worked hard and wrote some creative narrative stories based on the pictures from
Harris Burrdick.
Summit class has finished their literature group books. They enjoyed reading the different stories and
hearing about each other’s books. When we return we will be reading the novel, The Giver.
Ms. Mittelstadt’s Math
In math, the students have been working on operations with decimals. They learned about
adding and subtracting decimals and money. They also learned about multiplying decimals and
drew two types of models for multiplying. They divided decimals and checked their answers with
multiplication. The students solved word problems that included multiple steps and all of the
operations. After break, we will be starting Module 6: Ratios and Rates.
In Summit Math, the students just started Module 6: Expression and Equations. This module focuses
on simplifying expressions, using properties of addition and multiplication, and solving equations.
We will continue this Module after break.

Mrs. Dermody’s Social Studies
In January we will begin studying about Ancient Greece. The students will be studying how
geography influenced where people settled and what they did. The students will also learn about
Greece’s different governments and compare the two best known city-states, Sparta and Athens.
They will learn about how Sparta focused on military skills to control people they conquered, while
Athens was more interested in building a democracy.
Mrs. Dempsey’s Science Class
In Science, the students are currently working on fossils and the geologic time scale, which has
allowed them to see what has occurred on Earth over the past 4.6 billion years. Once we have
finished those topics, the students will learn about plate tectonics and how movement under the
Earth’s crust causes natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanoes. From there we will
begin to look at weather and the different patterns that occur across the continents. Continue to
review vocabulary and material with students throughout the chapter as they prepare for
assessments.

Team University of Michigan
Mrs. Anita Becker, Mrs. Tracy Decesare, Ms. Marianne Hourihan, Mrs. Dawn Krueger,
Mrs. Jen Medendorp & Mrs. Tucker
Mrs. Becker’s and Ms. Hourihan’s Reading and Language Arts Classes
Lightning Thief. In class we have been reading many Greek Myths. These myths will give student
prior knowledge for when we read the novel when we return from break.
In Language Arts we are working on pronouns.
Ms. Hourihan’s class has tried out online grammar practice at NoRedInk.com and the students
loved it!
We will start Greek/Latin Unit 7 when we return from break. Keep studying those roots!
Mrs. Krueger’s Social Studies Classes
We are ready to begin our study of Ancient Greece. Students will start with the geography of
Greece and the importance of why people settled there. While in this unit students will understand
how geography influenced groups of people such as the Minoans and Mycenaeans. We will also
discuss how the Spartans focused on military rule while the Athenians were more interested in
establishing a democracy. Students will also learn the culture of the ancient Greeks as expressed in
their religion, literature, and art.
Mrs. Medendorp’s Science Classes
Our investigations in science have led to our students working as field geologists identifying rocks
using visible characteristics such as crystal formation, translucency, arrangement of visible grains
and visual layering. Using these characteristics, Team Michigan students were able to identify
rocks as sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic. Students completed a rock identification lab to
close our unit on rocks. After winter break, we will continue to study rocks and the connection to

fossil formation. Students will learn how fossils form and how scientists use different methods to
determine the age of rocks and fossils. Our Earth is 4.6 billion years old and rocks contain the entire
history of the Earth, from climate changes to extinction level events. Our students will learn how to
unlock this information as we study the rock and fossil record.
Mrs. DeCesare’s Math Classes
As we move into the new year, we will start Module 7 “Representing Ratios and Rates”. While
working with rates and ratios, students will keep fractions in mind when simplifying. Ratios and rates
are simplified the same way! Our first lesson will be ratios and learning how to use tape diagrams to
represent them. From there we will tables to solve rates.
Don’t forget if you child is having any difficulty with any of the lessons, they can attend “Monday
Math Club” until 3:30 pm every Monday. All I need is a note or email stating that your child will be
staying after to attend. ([email protected]).
Michigan Students of the Month
Michigan Students of the Month for December are: Ricky Hansen, Amanda Martineck, Rylee
Dolan, Maddy Alford, and Ryan Grummel. Congratulations and continue following the “Walker

Team University of Illinois
Mrs. Lauren Driscoll, Mrs. Leah Fischer/Mrs. Jen Hodys, Mrs. Kelly Higgins,
Mrs. Tammy Johnson, & Mrs. Julie Nance
Math—Mrs. Nance
After winter break, the students will begin working on Module 6. In this module, they will be writing
ratios, using rates to compare quantities, and they will be finding unit rates. They will also be using
ratios and rates to make predictions. Some of the tools they will be using are tables, double
number lines, and tape diagrams.
Science—Mrs. Hodys
U of I students will be “digging” into the exploration of fossils throughout January. Fossils are very
interesting and can tell a lot about what happened on Earth from long ago. Students will explore
the age of fossils and how elements in a rock decay over time. Students will compare/contrast
two types of fossils (Body fossils and Trace Fossils). Throughout the fossil unit, students will research
these different types of fossils and create a visual display. There are lots of fun facts and
exploration ideas for fossils, jump in with both feet and EXPLORE!

Social Studies—Mrs. Driscoll
When we return to school in January, students will be wrapping up their study of Ancient Egypt by
learning about specific pharaohs from the Middle and New Kingdoms. Students will be
participating in a “Talking Heads” project to learn more about some of Egypt’s most powerful and
impacting leaders. They will learn about the pharaohs’ strengths and weaknesses as well as other
interesting facts that set the pharaohs apart from one another. Students will use their research to
award the pharaohs with the following titles: most interesting, most lasting impact, and most
important.
ELA—Mrs. Higgins and Mrs. Johnson
Students will be digging deep into our second novel Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief. As we get
to know our main character, Percy Jackson, we will be following his journey by analyzing and
connecting the informational text “The Hero’s Journey” to our novel. The Hero’s Journey describes
the archetype of a hero, and the stages every hero must go through. Is Percy a true hero?
Students will find out while being able to make connections and demonstrate their understanding
of these two texts.
In addition, classes will continue to make connections across the curriculum. While reading our
novel, students will be utilizing our Collections reading series by reading the short information text
“The Role of Myths in Ancient Greece”, as well as reading the poem “The Apple Discord”

P.E. Team
Backhand, forehand, smash, and drop! These are hits usually associated with the game of
badminton. However, badminton is a game that uses rackets. The game we have been playing
this month in Walker PE utilizes a paddle. What game is a combination of badminton, tennis, and
ping pong? PICKLEBALL!!
The students spent the past three weeks learning the skills of pickleball. We spent a few days
learning how to serve, and memorized the service rotation. Serving is perhaps the most important
skill in the game because it can dictate the pace of who scores points. We then progressed to
returning the ball with either a backhand or a forehand shot. After learning these skills, the students
played mini games with a partner up to seven points. While all of that was going on we had
students in the health hallway learning about a healthy target heart rate and how to check their
pulse to monitor their heart beat during exercise. In the fitness room the students worked out using
step up platforms and light dumbbell weights. Overall the past month in Walker PE had been a
SMASH hit!
In the upcoming month, the students can look forward to badminton and new fitness room
workouts!

Art Room News
Both grades are delving into printmaking, the art creating multiples of an image. The fifth graders
are working in groups exploring images of fall. They are making copies of a combined group
image. After printmaking, we will be looking at Pop art and illustrating onomatopoeia.
The sixth graders are exploring typography as well as linear perspective.
Art to Remember
Our school, in conjunction with Art to Remember, is offering a program that reproduces your child’s
personal artwork onto a variety of colorful products. Some include: magnets, key chains, quilt blocks,
beverage insulators, matted prints wall calendars, bookmarks, ceramic mugs, sports towels, mouse
pads, heart ceramic ornaments, journals, art sketchbooks, placemats, CD cases, stainless steel travel
mugs, pillows, teddy bears with T-shirts, tote bags, ceramic tiles, and T-shirts.
Your child will create artwork following the art class curriculum. Order forms will go out in March. You
will have the opportunity to purchase a variety of products featuring your child’s artwork. You are
under no obligation to purchase. However, we believe you will be excited by these unique personal
keepsakes and a portion of the proceeds is donated to the Hilda Walker Art Program. They make
great gifts for family and friends. We are excited to share this unique art program to promote your
child’s art!
Walker Art Club
Art club started in December. Tuesdays for 5th grade and Thursdays for 6th grade. This year we
are exploring the topics of Photography, painting, and paper construction among many others.
Art Club is after school until 3:55 PM.
5th Grade Art Club will meet on Tuesdays this year from December 13th-March 21st.
6th Grade Art Club will meet on Thursdays this year from December 8th- March 2nd.

“Believe in your #selfie” is underway! Please bring in a selfie to be put on our #selfie wall. Make sure
your name and homeroom is on the back of your selfie if you’d like it back at the end of the year.
Students completed the Hour of Code during National Computer Science Education Week. Ask
your child to see the game he/she created using computer coding.
This month in tech, 5th graders are using Technology to reinforce specific learning topics.
The 6th grade classes are exploring STEM while completing a Jr. Action Lab.

Reading Strategy of the Month
Some readers have difficulty keeping their place or focusing on the lines of text and can get
distracted, which can get in the way of understanding what they are reading. Have your reader
use a pencil, index card, or their finger to stay on track while reading the text. This will help your
reader focus, keep their place, and improve fluency.
Math News
Math Trick:
Square a 2 Digit Number Ending in 5
For this example, we will use 25
Take the "tens" part of the number (the 2 and add 1) =3
Multiply the original "tens" part of the number by the new number (2x3)
Take the result (2x3=6) and put 25 behind it. Result the answer 625.
Try a few more 75 squared ... = 7x8=56 ... put 25 behind it is 5625.
55 squared = 5x6=30 ... put 25 behind it ... is 3025. Another easy one! Practice it on paper first!

On Tuesday, December 13th, the Hilda Walker 6th Grade Wildcat Band along with the Summit Hill
String Ensembles gave their Winter Concert in the Hilda Walker gym. The band, led by Mr. Jason
Collins, performed Welcome Christmas, from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, a samba version of
Jingle Bells titled Jingle Bells, Samba Bells and other holiday favorites. The Beginning Strings group
showed how far they’ve gotten since the beginning of the year, playing tunes such as Dreidel, Jingle
Bells and Good King Wenceslas. The Summit Hill String Ensemble performed Winter, from Vivaldi’s
The Four Seasons along with a couple of original winter tunes. The String Ensembles are under the
direction of Mrs. Katie Goddard. Congratulations to all of the Walker and Summit Hill students from
these groups on a fine performance.

Domino’s cheese pizza will be offered for $2 per slice. If you would like to order pizza for your
child, please complete and return this form to your child’s homeroom by Thursday, January 12,
2017. The profits from this sale will support SHEF grants which provide more educational
opportunities for the students and staff of District 161. Domino’s will offer a coupon for a free pizza
if your child orders at least one slice. Students should bring a drink and snacks to eat with their
pizza.
