From the last issue, you might of thought wakestock is all sun and fun, and if that’s the case, this might change your mind. This photo was taken at wakestock 2010. The riders still had to go out and put on a show for the hard festival rockers. I dont know about you but that does not look fun. Don’t worry though, it cleared up later that day and was glorious. Bring on wakestock 2012!

WP: Hey Nick, How’s it going man? We’re so pumped that you’re back on the wa-ter, you must be thri l led about it?

ND: Yea mate, i t fee ls amazing to be r id ing again! Af ter such a long t ime off the water, I rea l ly do appreciate just being able to go r ide whenever I fee l . I t ’s the best fee l ing ever and I ’ve missed i t a lot .

WP: What was your f irst reaction when you did your knee?

ND: My f i rst thought was…wel l , I d idn’t ac-tual ly know what I had done at the t ime, but I knew something went wrong. As I cased the wake, my knee went complete ly out to the r ight , so I knew something had hap-pened but I d idn’t know i f I had done l iga-ment damage or d is located i t .

WP: ouch! How did you feel at the t ime?

ND: I kept thinking, what do I do? What do I do now? First I f ind out what’s happened, then I f ind out how long I ’ve got off the water. I just had to sit back and take i t , I couldn’t do anything about i t . I couldn’t rush i t , I had to try and get back to England from Dubai as quick as I could and get the operat ion sort-ed. You can’t rush these things, i ts l igament damage. You’ve got to wait for i t to heal i t-sel f . So yeah, my f i rst react ion was I ’m out for a year, I better get good at Black Ops.

WP: You’ve been on the mend for over 7 months, this must have been tough, did you encounter any problems?

ND: Yeah i t ’s been a very long t ime, pretty much stuck in England for most of i t ! But i t ’s a l l been so worth every bit of gym work and physio. I can see i t show’s, lucky for me their were no problems throughout my recovery. I l istened to everything my physio and gym trainer told me, so I didn’t over do i t .

WP: What gets you pumped before a sesh?

ND: Ermmm, Monster Energy, preferably a Monster Ripper, there my favourite. Feeling good when I wake up really, going on the tram-poline, warming up, get my knee all stretched out, nice little bit of amping music to get me ready to go ride. Now I’m more excited than I have ever been as I had so long off.

I ’ve been wanting to r ide so much so I’m nat-ural ly pumped to go out there and ride for hours, as long as my body can take it haha. The natural buzz which I had when I was a kid, I think I’ve got now, which is good, I needed it. I wasn’t not having it last year and the years before but I needed something to give me a boost again, so as bad as this injury is, its done me pretty well, I think, its good.

WP: if you had to give up wakeboarding, what would you do?

ND: I’d sti l l want to be around it, I ’d sti l l be involved in wakeboarding so I would probably try to speak to my sponsors; Hyperl ite, Mys-tic, Monster, and see if there was anything I could take up on there part. I st i l l wouldn’t want to leave wakeboarding completely, maybe design boards or something. Even when I was off, I st i l l went down the lake and watched everyone and kept up to date with everything on the websites. I’d probably start knee boarding, do it properly. Not compet-ing, but I’d do it quite a bit, my knees are re-al ly good right now, so I can kneeboard haha!

WP: Nick Davies Pro Kneeboarder, it’s got a nice ring to it. oK, lets mix it up. if you were stuck on an island with a ca-ble and you could take 3 objects, what would they be?

ND: I would take a crate of 24 monster r ip-per, that ’s one object . I ’d take my board. My bindings come with my board, so that ’s one object…and my knee brace, th ink that ’s a l l I ’d need.

WP: this is a tough one, what’s the most embarrassing thing you have ever done?

ND: Out of every interv iew I ’ve done in the past, there has never been such a hard quest ion! . . .ermm ok, ohh dam! I don’t know! I ’ l l get back to you on th is haha.

WP: We wil l hold you to that haha, i f you could take any celebrity on a date, who would it be and why?

ND: This is easy, i t would be Vanessa Hud-gens! She’s my baby g i r l ! There are lots of reason’s why, but the main one is that she could buy me a Nandos and I can put extra hot sauce in her eyes for banter haha!

WP: ooo saucy. We caught up with you for a photo shoot, you’re r iding sick. What tr icks have you been thinking about over the last few months?

ND: Wel l thank you! Before I d id my knee, I wanted to get a ra ley 9 in Thai land, which was my tr ick for last year unt i l a l l th is hap-pened. St i l l , that’s on the agenda, I want to get i t done. What e lse…double f l ips, I want to do more double f l ips, wel l , start to learn double f l ips. I st i l l want to try that double tantrum on the boat again, but th is t ime not hurt my knee. I want to try get back mobe 7’s off the f lat . Hopeful ly i t wi l l be th is winter in Thai land, that’s where I ’m going to be r id-ing for a couple of months. They’ l l be a few other l i t t le t r icks, you’ l l have to wait and see those. I don’t want to give them out, In case someone does them before me haha.

WP: What are your plans for 2012?

ND: I was going to take this year out, full stop and start fresh for 2012, I wasn’t going to com-pete or anything and just ride, no pressure at all, just try get away as long as I can and have the whole winter sorting my self out, getting my tricks back and landing new tricks for next year. Do the whole WWA tour, do the world championships which I want to try and win and retain my title from 2010 and just keep on go-ing. With all my sponsors, Hyperlite, Monster and Mystic, there the ones backing me up. De-signing new stuff which will be out in the next couple of years, we’ve been working on 2014 stuff already. That’s what my future is, seeing where wakeboarding is going, especially cable. It’s growing so much. Competitions, I want to hold my own event next year and if that goes well just keep it going throughout the years. I want to try and get 10 invited riders over, Monster will sort it all out, they will be behind me on this. Just keep on riding, enjoying it, its good to be back out there again.

WP: All sounds great man. Good luck for the future, we hope it all goes well. We’re looking forward to catching up with you in 2012 and seeing those new tricks!

ND: Thanks a l lot mate! Look forward to i t too! A l l the best !

The Raley is al l about the approach. Begin pract ic ing your ‘cut’ between the corners with the shortest dis-tance between them. This is usual ly in the area before the start ing dock. This is one of the t ightest spots on

the cable (a l lowing for more height) . On a 5 tower cable, for example, go through the buoys at corner 4, relax, and begin a progressive edge towards the inside of the cable.

* invert - verb | in-vərt | put upside down or in the opposite posit ion, order, or arrangement.

The more tension you can create in the l ine, the more the cable is going to pick you up. A

progressive edge is key, not a fast long cut. Make sure you have your hips up, and your shoulders back. Arms and legs should be sl ight ly

One you have reached the peak of your Raley posit ion begin to pul l the handle down, this wi l l br ing your legs underneath you.

As you pul l on the han-dle, pul l towards your hip as this wi l l help br ing your legs into the

r ight posit ion. At this point,

IMPORTANT: DO NOT come off you’re edge when you scoop. Think of i t as digging your heel into the water, not pushing through the base of your foot.

Once airborn, i ts important to keep your head up and looking in front you. As the cable pul ls you, extend your body into the raley posit ion, lett ing your legs become inverted and your arms slowly extend. Spott ing the wa-

ter can help you to judge how long you can stay extended.

Once you hit the water, absorb the impact into a squat posit ion, with your head and shoulders sl ight ly over the rest of your body. Move onto an edge to make a smooth transit ion to cont inue r iding away.

bent, keep your head look-ing up. After 2-3 seconds on your edge, i ts t ime to scoop. To start the scoop, you need to keep the major i ty of your weight on your lead foot and kick i t backwards, as i f you’re kicking a footbal l behind you as hard as you can.

your board should come un-derneath you. Try to spot your landing, make sure your knees are soft and ready for impact.
