Waikerie Lutheran Primary School is a supportive Christ-centred community, equipping each student for life.
Message from the Principal They would learn so much more at home
In South Australia since 2000, home schooling has increased
88.7 per cent from 506 students (300 families) in 2000 to 999 (566
families). Parents in these families have literally taken on the
role as the primary educator of their children. These families
take their responsibility as primary educator of their children
very, very seriously. I commend them for taking full responsibility for their
children’s education.
Is home schooling for your family?
In some families, both parents choose to undertake a portion of paid work for
many and varying reasons.
Home schooling requires a full time commitment as an extension of the primary
care that all families provide for their children.
Home schooling also requires considerable investment, as any project does to
be a success. Extra trips backwards and forwards, basic text books, internet
connection and subscriptions for yourself as a teacher and for your child as a
student add up. As I have discussed with a family that has both home schooled
and received school services, the WLPS fee of approximately $1600 per student
is excellent value for money.
The government provides freedom of choice for families to home school but
does not actively support this schooling method with funding. Our economy
requires as many adults to be in the paid workforce as possible, and as such, all
governments support modern schooling as a release for parents into the
workforce (amongst other reasons).
I’d love to home school my kids, but God has called me to this school to assist in
the education of 120 kids that I can call my own. I know my staff feel likewise.
When we are finished at school for the day, for those staff with kids, we too work
through the evening with homework requirements, showing an active interest in
our children’s education. Upon reflection again – I have the best of both worlds
– I am involved in ‘home’ schooling to complement the education which the
school offers, and I am also involved in an organisation that shares the gifts and
talents of educators with those families around us. Adam Borgas

Seasonal Uniform Change
Remember this is the last week for summer and winter uniform as from next week (Week 4) students need to be
dressed in winter uniform. Uniform is available at McCoy Menswear in town.
Expression of Interest
Attention all parents! We are looking at holding a small review of summer uniform lines in time for the new
season. We are re-visiting our summer uniform to ensure that it serves the needs of your child while also best
serving the needs of the school. We are looking at monitoring how each uniform line serves the needs of our
community, and the guiding principles behind why a uniform exists and the part that each piece of uniform
plays. If you would like to be a parent rep, please let me know by contacting the office or e-mail:
[email protected]. Please forward your expression of interest to be a parent representative by Friday 15
May 2015.
Lost and Found Our lost and found basket is overflowing with items such as – lunch boxes, clothes, shoes and even a sleeping
bag. Please see the table in the quadrangle during the week to collect your items.
Enjoy a blessed week!
