WAGGA WAGGA 4WD CLUB MINUTES OF MEETING, 16 March 2011

Present: As per attendance book. Joe Nichol welcomed everyone to the meeting. Apologies: As per attendance book Minutes of Previous Meeting: Minutes of previous meeting were passed. Moved – Joe Nichol Seconded – Ken Antill Business Arising: Bull bars not to be banned at this stage. Correspondence In: Nil Correspondence Out: Nil Treasurers Report: As per report presented by Bill Boydell. Closing balance $2309.14. Moved – Bill Boydell Seconded – Ian Johnson Publicity Report:

2AAFM have been advertising the upcoming Quarry day; however they had the day in February; however Jeff Brill got onto them and got them straight.

Forms were filled in to get a feature in The Leader – hopefully in tomorrow’s issue. Next year look at getting flyers to hand out to compliment the signs on the cars: not much response, but there have been

a few enquiries to Michael – maybe flyer to hand out when people are looking at the sign. Peter Van Wel suggested that Peter Alabon on the radio may be useful – he is often looking for events to talk about. Peter asked for some flyers re the Quarry day for the shop – Sue will do some up. Southern Cross 10 were approached, but unsure if anything has been aired.

Delegates Report:

Association putting out monthly summary sheet. Blaze Aid need help with response gear. Smoke alarms are now compulsory in caravans, campervans and other moveable places where one can sleep. So it

appears those with camper trailers also require smoke alarms. Changes to constitution – John advises that all is okay. The Government is not going to ban bull bars – the press release was in error.

Newsletter Report:

Stack of things are in the newsletter this month. Generally things are good, however some reports are late getting to Sue. Sue has had a problem with getting out this month’s newsletter, due to a blackout at work where the newsletter is

produced. Trip Reports:

Craig’s Hut was a “hoot” – or in other words really good. Very good campsite was found that fitted all 16 vehicles together.

Coming Trips/Events:

Salway’s are leaving Good Friday and travelling to Brisbane with expected arrival 2 May 2011. There for a few days and then travel to Wagga with arrival 9 May 2011. Will be avoiding the black stuff as much as possible. It is expected to be graded at 1 wet or dry. Trip is planned from Google Earth and topographical maps. Camping yes, with camper trailers suitable Planning to travel 350km maximum per day If anyone wants to join them they are more than welcome.

John Kent planning a day trip Sunday 3 April 2011 around the Tumut, Batlow and Tumbarumba area. Uncertain as to what roads will be taken – John may do a recky first May need a chainsaw or two Bring good walking shoes Leave 8.00 am just past the Forest Hill Public School.

Track Clearing 7 / 8 May 2011 is still on. Joe Nichols – Still planning his trip – may be some changes however.

General Business:

Rural Fire Brigade is going to use the Quarry for training on Saturday 19 March, the day before the quarry day. They are starting at 8.30 am and will be there for a few hours – they will be out by the time we are planning to have a working bee at 1.00pm.

Driver Training – planned dates are not looking good. May be last weekend in June/first weekend in July Ian and John will set firm date

There is talk of more channels being put into the UHF band for radio contact. Sue has organized a site outside Woolworths in Gurwood Street to sell raffle tickets for Relay for Life on Saturday – all

10 prizes have now been confirmed and will be on display. The raffle will be drawn at the Quarry day – ticket will also be on sale at the quarry day also.

Quarry Day Program subcommittee has set the program as per the newsletter There will be continuous demonstrations that will last for about 45 minutes and people can wander from activity to activity at the end of each timeslot. Each activity has a coordinator and 1 or 2 helpers as required – this has been organised. John Moore has been out to the quarry with the slasher. Michael Salway, Paul and Brendon Kingdom have started on the whipper snippering. Helpers required from 1.00 pm Saturday 19 March to help finish the preparation for Sunday. Whipper snippering to be finished, low branches to be lopped, track to be marked etc etc George Cameron and John Kent have set out the self drive track, and it has been extended and now takes about 20 minutes. Will need to take tarpaulin out as there is 80% chance of rain over the weekend. Will also need to get the barbeque gear from All Things Off Road Also need tables, bins etc Safety vests etc also required Club info board will not go up if it is wet.

Jim Simpson has organised the barbeque trailer from the Fire Brigade. Gary Frater has organised the porta loo.

Volunteers required for the gate/registration and parking area. Barbeque will be run by the ladies, as the men will be busy doing the activities etc. Brenda will buy the meat, bread, onions and sauces as required.

Morning tea will be supplied by the members and sold to the public – it is envisaged that the ladies supply a cake or slice. Items will need to be individually wrapped, with ingredients on each slice. Charges were discussed and it was decided that the sausage sizzle will cost $2.00 and tea/coffee and slice (morning tea) will cost $1.50 Paul will organise 2 large drink eskies (supplied with ice) from McDonalds. There will be cold water and cordial on offer during the day – free of charge. After much discussion, it was decided that all funds raised on the day will be donated to the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life. Peter Van Wel put forward a motion “Whatever funds are collected on the day through the raffle and food sales would be added to the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life Money already raised” Seconded Ken Antill – vote taken and motion carried All other monies raised throughout the year should still be donated to The Royal Flying Doctor Service Raffle: 1st – John Kent. 2nd Jeff Brill

Lorella Springs Wilderness Park, One Million Acres of Coast on the Gulf of Carpentaria, Savannah Way, Northern Territory, NT. Australia's Final Frontier. Hi , Below is our latest newsletter update. Hope to spend some time with you at Lorella. Regards, Rhett. Newsletter 8th March 2011 Hello All Adventurers, Another season is about to open and we hope to see you here this year. Many of you have been here before and to you we say "Thanks" and "Welcome Again". As of today's date, the roads are still wet, but we anticipate opening on the 1st of April 2011 ... So start packing those vehicles, tents and vans for one of the most unspoilt destinations in Australia. LORELLA IS NOT JUST AN OVERNIGHT STOP. MOST PEOPLE AGREE THAT IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THEIR "SEE AUSTRALIA" TRIP. Have a browse through our website, http://www.lorellasprings.com , it will give you an idea of just a fraction of the things to see and do here. People that know Australia, and have found us a few years ago, have been back over and over again, and each time staying longer. Some are staying for several months as there is so much to see and do here for adventurers of all ages. For those of you fishermen and passersby, with not enough time to stay for a while, it is worth travelling the extra 29 kilometre and stopping in to check out our LORELLA SPRINGS famous bar, which has just had a upgrade. Have a few beers, grab a feed, get to know some local knowledge on the area and relax in the hot springs for a while to break your journey. Lorella Springs Wilderness park this year is copping another monster of a wet season, which is wonderful for getting all of the waterways flowing again and replenishing this majestic land. This type of condition is good for the landscape and all of its wildlife.....Including the legendry BARRA , which are “going off’’. The big thing that has changed at Lorella this year is ACCESS. The end of last season saw a lot of earth works in progress to improve our road .We now have access out to the coast. Yes, you can now tow an off road caravan or boat and trailer all the way to the ROSIE with ease and gain access to the pristine and untouched gulf. One of the world’s most remote and final frontiers. I am sure this will interest a lot of you, who usually fish the Limmen or at King ash bay on the Macarthur for long periods of stay. As now there is access to all of Lorella’s untouched and unspoiled coastal waterways and the isolated stretch of gulf between the Limmen and Macarthur. Travel some 86 km along the Rosie track with your off road van, boat, even a quad bike if you have the room, all of your fishing gear and crab pots. Set up camp and stay, for a week, a month or enjoy the whole dry. With our boat ramp upgrade allowing access to the gulf and all of its fishing opportunities, offering the outback adventure of a life time.. This year we have access into even more beautiful waterways for swimming, fishing, scenery, bird and animal watching. LORELLA SPRINGS being a 1 million acre coastal property (4000 square kilometres) has got something for everyone. For the bird watchers(TWEETERS) Lorella is like a dream. With such a vast variety of birds. Exotic and rare. There are so many variation of landscape and terrain. With countless swamps, waterways, coastal salt flats, wet lands, forest, escarpment, dry and wet country . Every season we have more birds spotted and added to our bird list, we supply for you to check off. Jaberu, Bush Bustard, Brolga, Gouldian finch are just a few, with the Yellow Chat found by some very excited” birdies” last season. As we said last year, although we have owned Lorella Springs Station for over twenty years, most of this massive country is still untouched and every year we discover new and wonderful things about it.

A few recent items to tell you about are the opening up of previously untouched areas such as Wildfire Gorge, Crystal Springs, Billabong Drive, Flying Fox Swamp, the verrry hot "Nudie Springs", unexplored swamps, lakes and creeks just bubbling teaming bursting with wildlife, and new tracks to different parts of Lorella and the 20 kilometres of Carpentaria Coast that no one has ever driven to before. We have found is a giant Jabiru nest where the birds return every year to breed and nest. As well as the Sea Eagles Nest, and hundreds of different bird species. This IS a bird lovers paradise. There are also huge Giant Groper that are indifferent to people at both the fishing camp and at the Rosie River entrance, and most fishermen see them as the Groper try to steal your Queenfish before the sharks and crocodiles do. Please note that all of Lorella is a Wilderness Retreat Sanctuary, and apart from what is to be eaten that day, everything is "catch and release unharmed". This especially applies to the Giant Groper, all Very Large Fish, Crocs, and even Large Sharks. All Animal and Birdlife are protected and there is a very strict "no shooting " policy. Because of repeated requests for a secluded "Nude Area" we have opened up our "Nudie Springs". This is about 20 kilometres from the main homestead and camping area, but has it's own thermal spring, and BBQs areas, and just lots to see and do, all within easy bush walking or 4WD distance ... or just come back to the main campground with it's bar with Icy Cold Drinks. If you are part of any sort of club, bring your club along as we offer substantial discounts to groups, on our already really low prices . We also offer great discounts for those wishing an extended stay. Why not get a season pass here ? It is the remote outback you have been searching for all your life. Come and meet like minded people. Perhaps you may feel like a break from your "Around Australia roughing it" holiday, then you may like to spend some time in our new Luxury, Roomy, African Safari Style Tents. And "Bush Bashing" 4 Wheel drivers need not worry that things are too tame for them, there is still one million acres, most of which is still largely unexplored. So if you are a four wheel driver, then there are hundreds of kilometres of tracks to explore. And if you are really into extreme 4WD driving then we have some challenges that you are going to love. All the time we are putting in tracks to places that no human being has ever been before. Maybe you may like to help bush bash to new and exciting locations that we have found through Google Earth. Leave lots of time for your stay at Lorella as there is so much to see and do. Remember, Lorella is one million acres, far bigger that many countries in the world .. and there is lots and lots to entice everyone ... from relaxing in the Magic Healing Thermal Spring with a "Coldie" from the Bar, (under a Billion stars with a Bonfire blazing alongside for that romantic adventure atmosphere) ... to some of the best creeks, rivers, thermal springs, billabongs, coastline, history, fossicking, untouched bushland and all sorts of birdlife, wildlife, fishing, crabbing and exploring in Australia. Just take some time to go through all of our website http://www.lorellasprings.com.au There are just too many things to list here. Lorella is just great for all ages. Trip Report Day trip to Tumut, Buddong and Tumbarumba (well not quite) It always pays to have a Plan A, B, C, D etc. In other words flexibility is the key… especially on the trips I lead because we never know what we might encounter or where we might end up. I always class them as “exploratory”. Plan A was to do a day trip to Tumut, trundle up Wereboldra behind Tumut, toddle along to Blowering Dam wall, sneak along vague tracks to Snubba Range on the Western side of Blowering Dam, follow our noses down to the foreshore for lunch, bumble our way up Boundary road on the western side of Talbinga dam to Buddong, have a sticky beak there before pelting across to Paddy River Dam and then trotting home via Tumbarumba. As I say, that was Plan A. Things changed a bit on the way… as usual. The day started badly for me. I was all organised, jumped in the 4x4 and “click”. Flat battery. Sigh!! I tried jump starting from the auxiliary but that did not work so a quick call to Peter van Wel gave him a detour to pull me out of the car port and fire it up. First recovery exercise for the day! At least I still managed to make the start line almost on time where Jeff and Helen, Ian and Robyn, Ken, Sue and Fay, Ken and Sharon, Matthew and Mitchell, Clancy and Anne, and Jon and Brenda were waiting. With Pete in with me as co-pilot/navigator/distraction/gofer we had a convoy of 8 vehicles. We met up with Tony and Carolyn, Ray, Peter, Shane, and James at Tumut on time at 9.15. So we added 3 more vehicles to make a good number of 11 – 4 Landcruisers (that’s a change); 4 Patrols, a Prado, a Rodeo and Jeff’s poor lonely Pajero (I think that’s 11). A great mixture of experience and first timers. After lowering tyre pressures, a briefing and allocation of order of travel we took the easy track up Wereboldra. After comments of “can’t see over the bonnet” on the big contour banks we made it to the repeater tower without losing any one. A quick leg stretch then it was down the road to the Snowy Mountains Highway (we will take the “interesting” powerline track another day) then to Brandy Mary’s Park below Blowering Dam wall for a well earned cuppa (what? - flush loos? – “yippee”). While the rest of the troops checked out the upgrade work on Blowering Dam wall (they raised the dam wall 3 metres, but not the spillway, to give more safety margin in big floods) Pete and I checked to see if our track was open which it was. We eventually got back together and then a “character building” climb (especially for the less experienced among us) saw all safely on Snubba Range Track with grins on faces. From there it was an easy but dusty run along Snubba and down to Blowering foreshores with a chat to the owners of Blowering Camp on the way. They managed to survive the drought and downturn in visitor numbers and were enjoying having the dam full again. Lunch stop was at a delightful picnic and camp area under shady trees and with water views. What? Toilets again?? From lunch we proceeded along the foreshore to the main Batlow Talbingo road, then left over the hills and through creeks where the bridges had been washed out. Close to Jounama Dam wall it was hard right and slow going through washouts and bog holes as we made our way up Boundary Road to Buddong Falls admiring the view on the way. By this stage the day was slipping away so we had a conference on the various options we had. No one wanted to be late home so instead of finding our way to Paddy River Dam and Tumbarumba, we made a “beeline” along De Beauzeville road to Laurel Hill to Batlow. When I say beeline, have you ever seen a bee fly? They go all over the place and stop to smell the flowers on the way. So it was with us. The road was quite washed on in places and there were numerous bog holes which required taking the best line and very careful wheel placement. As one of our group found out, taking the wrong line can mean getting stuck and getting snatched out. It can be confusing with two “Kens” on a trip. “Ken keep right on this one”. Oooops – you mean the other Ken. I should have kept left!! Safely at the black top at Laurel Hill (why do they have a “detour” sign when the road is perfectly clear and open?), it was reinflate the tyres, turn right then home via Batlow and Adelong, getting rid of the Tumut/Gundagai mob on the way. I managed to maintain my record of always arriving home with fewer vehicles than we started out with, but it was a good day with a bit of everything – rocks, steep climbs, mud, wash outs, dust, good road, a lovely lunch stop and great company. Pity we could not finish Plan A so we will have to do another trip to finish off Part B. Thanks to all for an enjoyable day. John Kent

Craigs Hut Trip Weekend.

Saturday 19th Feb, 2011 An early start for most of the crew as they came from all over. We all met at Jubalee Park for an 8am start. Barry & Raylene Menz, Stuart Tozer, Arron Day & Lyndal all from Tumut. Ray & Mandy Brits and sons, Shane & Nicki Porter and Peter & Kelly Magnone and sons all from Gundagai. Dean & Mandy Hulme from Jugiong. Ian,Wendy & Hollly Menz from Condobolin. Mike & Jan Dolan from Batemans Bay. The crew from Wagga were George & Rita Cameron, Ken and Sue Antill with Amy & Jackson, Tony & Carolyn Driscoll, Micheal & Ann Salway & Gary Frater.

The trip began with the weather looking a bit dubious making us wonder if it was a good idea to be trekking around the Victorian high plains. As we approached Chiltern the heavens opened and we had heavy rain for our morning tea stop at Chiltern Park. After a wet & cosy cuppa under the Chiltern park toilet verandah we headed off with thoughts of a wet miserable weekend. By the time we reached Myrtleford, fuelled up and headed towards the High Plains the weather was clearing. Lunch was at Lake Buffalo a nice recreation area on the south side of the lake. With the weather turned for the better we had a steady drive towards Mt Stirling. Some roads were closed due to landslides and other damage from bad weather. So taking it easy we followed Mt Sterling road and turned into Circuit Track bringing us into Clear Hills track. A stop & look from the top of Mt Stirling

where the view was a little foggy, windy and cold. It was a steady drive towards our destination - Graigs Hut - until a boggy patch about 500mts from the hut. The first two vehicles went through with ease and the third vehicle bogged setting the pace for the others. A bit of fun & a good exercise for those who haven’t had a lot of experience with snatch strapping, winching and getting dirty. Some learning what their vehicle can and can’t do. After the excitement we reached Craigs Hut a little later than planned but were still able to enjoy the tranquility and isolation of the hut and its location. Our camp for the night was a small clearing downhill from Craigs Hut which as very cosy and comfortable. A good size campfire warmed the evening with a sing-a-long accompanied by Micheal Salway on guitar. As the evening rolled on the fog rolled in and the rain kept away. Sunday 20th Feb. 2011. Sunday morning we returned to Craigs Hut for a second visit to a top spot in the Victorian High Plains. The hut has been rebuilt, weathered and looking authentic with great views whichever way you look. Heading

back down Clear Hills track we turned down Monument track, which is a lot better than it used to be, to Bindaree Hut for morning tea. We were unable to cross the creek to the hut due to the water level but watched while other visitors to the area wadded across. A stop and look at the Bindaree Falls was certainly a good call. The falls had plenty of water

flowing over it. The view was enjoyed by all, some staying dry and some leaving wet. You just can’t get that good photo shot if you don’t get under the water fall. Travelling back home the way we came we had our lunch and put air back into the tyres at the entrance to Mt Buller. With cars and bellies fuelled we headed home along the black top. As leaders we were pleased to see and hear all enjoyed themselves and most had confidence in our decision making. We had a variety of driving, a little muddy test and the weather stayed fine and we made it to our destination - Craigs Hut. Barry and Raylene Menz.

Quarry Day Report Sunday 20 March and it was all hands on deck for our annual community “come and try” day at the quarry. After much work in the lead up to the day, the quarry was a hive of activity from about 8 am to 4.30 pm as around 30 to 40 interested people turned up to take part in a range of activities and demonstrations and then take the opportunity to practice a few of the things they learnt and to drive around our training tracks. This year we changed the format somewhat and had a number of activities running concurrently, each for 45 minutes. This gave visitors the opportunity to spend time at the things they particularly wanted to learn about with much more flexibility. While it was much more work for those running the demonstrations, it worked very well. In addition, we moved the tarp and lunch/assembly point up into the quarry where it was much closer to the action and spectators could see what was going on. All demonstrations were also in the quarry to make it easier for people to move from one to the other. This also worked very well.

Activities for the day included:

Demonstrations of hand and power winching

Vehicle recovery using a snatch strap

Stall recovery when climbing hills

How to read terrain, pick the line of travel, gear, momentum and so on

How a 4WD works and how to set it up and prepare for bush travel.

Mending of tyres and punctures

BBQ lunch with raffle draw and lucky gate prize.

Driving on “easy”, “difficult” and “self drive” tracks using a revamped map of tracks based on a satellite photograph of the quarry. This seemed to work well with a minimum of confusion and smooth traffic flow.

Putting on a day like this is a lot of work and involves many people. I would like to sincerely thank all those involved. The ladies did a terrific job of registering visitors and providing the morning and afternoon teas and BBQ lunch. The men doing the demos did a terrific and professional job, while those acting as co-drivers as visitors tackled the tracks were very much appreciated, especially by the novices. Of particular note is the excellent job done by those at the working bee on the Saturday to set up driving tracks and signs and to mow the long grass. The neat and tidy appearance really added to the day.

On reflecting on the day a number of us have thought of ways we can improve it more and I would very much like to have a debriefing and discussion at our next club meeting.

Thank you again to all those who contributed to a very successful day. John Kent
